Yes, as a matter of fact, I know we can get raw honey at the farmers market and your article got me to thinking--I'd like to go on Saturday and get a gallon and begin to put it in our kefir smoothies.  We are having a hard time with cedar fever allergy, so I think that would be very helpful every day to combat that in several ways.

i am wondering if anyone has a great deal on buying raw honey.  i was getting it here for $4/qt.  then it went up to $5, now $7.  seems high.  also, they sell local honey in our grocery for $7 for 48 oz (a bit more than a qt, right?)  just wondering where you all are getting it now, to see if i need to order it over the net or something.  thanks!

We found a local (30 mi away) keeper.  We pay $8.50 for 5lbs.  That would be 80 ounces if my math is correct.  I am not sure where you are located, but this family never advertises or puts it in stores.  Just word of mouth.
You have to buy and stock up cause they do sell out of it before they
start harvesting it again in the summer.  Ask farmers cause bee keepers around here put hives on different farmers land.  There is another guy 90 mi away but I do not know what he charges that does the same thing. HTH

my friend that was selling me the honey had something happen to her hives.  she said it was something to do with the chemicals used in farming.  her bees were all killed or gone.  there are a couple other local farmers, but the one that sells in our grocery store isn't raw and my friend said she though he was adding water or something. thanks for the info, i am going to compare in a different town tomorrow.

Wow, what a great question to ask. I know it wasn't asked as a question, but I'll ask it: do crop chemicals end up in honey? I looked for info on this at honey.com (a great site, by the way, if you want recipes for honey), and couldn't find anything. I'd be interested to see some research on this. Maybe I'll give it a shot. When I have a free moment.

There is organic honey.  I sell tropical traditions products and they have an organic honey. You can go to their web site and type in honey and it will give you a page on the organic specifications that have to be met and the like.  They also say that chemicals and pesticides can be found in honey.
Hope that gives you a good start on your quest.  Smiley

Does anyone know if the good properties of raw honey are still beneficial if used in baking? I just got a gallon of raw honey, and am wondering if I shouldn't "waste it" by baking with it.  If I bake with it, I'm assuming it will become "pasturized" Huh...but really have no idea...help please!

My understanding is that you kill all the beneficial things in the honey by baking with it, or heating it very high.  For us, the purpose in buying raw honey is b/c it hasn't been heated, thus there are beneficial enzymes and such in it. I have been under the impression that when you bake with it, it basically becomes like any other sweetener.  But I'm not a honey expert, this is just my understanding.  I personally wouldn't waste it on baking (in large amounts), unless you have an inexpensive source.  I do use it in whole wheat bread sometimes, where it is just a couple T. or so.  JMO

I had the same question (how much survives in my tea, my bread, etc.) and I called a representative of my local bee-keepers association.  Here is an excerpt from what I posted afterwards:

The Honey Lady said that most enzymes would survive, a few would not.  She said some even survive baking for long periods, which makes me glad I've been using raw honey in my bread recipe.  She said raw honey is ALWAYS better than the processed, even if most of the enzymes are killed because there are some that are so resilient, not to mention the fact that there are tons we haven't figured out yet.    Smiley           ~L

Wow...those enzymes are though cookies  Cheesy Great to know! I think I will continue to use it in my baking, because I got a fairly good deal on it, and it's definitely better than white sugar Smiley

Does anyone have personal experience with raw  honey causing a rise in blood sugar levels?    I've been told to use  agave nectar instead of honey for a sweetener and am wondering why honey is considered to be  so bad  for you?     From the research I did on agave nectar I thinking agave nectar may not be so great.  Undecided
Honey is mentioned in the Bible  and personally I  would rather use honey as a sweetener.    So what are your opinions/ research about honey.   Thanks!

RB, i've taken straight honey at times when i've been fatigued and having brain fog, and it's made a considerable difference, both in my energy level and in clearing my head. I have low blood sugar sometimes, so it helps to raise it. I like to use raw honey as a sweetener, because it has enzymes (which i am deficient in), as well as bee pollen and royal jelly, which have nutritional benefits. I have an allergy to agave nectar, so i don't use that.

Around here I can buy raw honey for less than $3 per pound.  Country Life sells a gallon bucket for $22.50 which is around 8 pounds of honey.  And I just ordered a 2 gallon bucket from someone who keeps bees and am paying $36 - that's just over $2 per pound.

Keep checking around, because the idea of $7.50 per pound makes me just SICK!  Maybe it's an expensive part of the country . . .

Wow, good for you guys! I've always gotten my raw honey free from a neighbor, and then purchased wildflower honey, not raw, in bulk for about $2.99 from the health food store for everyday use. I've rarely seen it sold raw, and when I have it's really expensive. Glad you all had better sources.

I am wondering if there are people here who would be interested in buying raw honey.   If anyone is interested would you please PM me and tell me what quantity you like to buy your honey in and approx how much you would buy.  I have a source to buy in bulk but don't really want to go into debt if I couldn't sell it.   Thanks

i just looked at the jar and it's Raw Unheated Honey from Sunny Acres Honey Farm in Arbela, MO  it's about a qt. size jar and says 3 lbs.

i didn't find a website for them, but here is their company profile which has their phone # and maybe you could call and they'd ship it to ya!  hope this helps someone out!

Did you get it from someone who regularly sells it?  If so, would you mind letting us know who it was?  I'd like to look into getting some for that price.   Smiley

The corruption in the food industry never ends. Here's another good reason to find locally produced honey.
