  Rosehips
« on: November 01, 2006, 02:02:41 PM » by Whiterock
Yesterday gathered about 40 small, red, rosehips from some wild dog roses. They are not dark red or soft but I missed gathering all the other one before they fell off (or were eatten by something). What can I do with them?
Thanks,
WR

Are rosehips the little red berries on some rose bushes or are they the little bulb left over after all the petals fall off the rose? Do all rose bushes have rosehips? I've been meaning to find this out. All I know is that they add good taste to teas and have some good vitamins, especially C.

There is a Rosehip article with recipes on No Greater Joy's website.

Go to www.nogreaterjoy.org

click on "calendar"

click on "herb lesson"

click on "Rosehips"

It's pretty good if I do say so myself.  Wink

Thank you, it was wonderfully helpful! Smiley I picked some last week from the manicured landscaping at Reagan National Airport  Smiley. Hope they didn't have a camera. I thought I'd research them when I got home to see if I got the right thing. But I guess they are not safe because of pesticides. Oh well, maybe next year I can get some wild roses to grow.

Does anyone know if it is OK to pick rose hips off the bush after they have frozen and use them?   I was reading in the Beeyoutiful Newsletter about rose hips and wanted to try the Rose Hips Lassi but I didn't pick my Hips this fall.
Great little newsletter Rebekah!    Lots of useful information plus lots of tempting stuff to buy.
Thanks.

Hello to Whiterock,
I'm sort of new around here, but I didn't notice a response to your question about rosehips.  I'm interested myself in what to do with and how to get the most nutrition from them.  Did you ever find out and could you share your info with me?  Pelican

I have a climbing rose bush (don juans) out front and just yesterday noticed some rose hips on them...are those ok to use or do they need to be from certain rose bushes like the dog rose.  We put the plant in but bought it from Lowe's so don't know if there were pesticides used prior to us getting it.  Would it still be ok to use?  Don't know much about the subject and new to the whole forum thing.  Any info would be good.
Thanks.

I would think that they would be okay to use if they hadn't been on the ground for too long, it would probably be better to pick them off as they would be fresher.  I would also be wary of bugs and molds/dampness having a source into the rosehips if they are on the ground.  You may want to checkout ForeverGirl's link above to NGJ's article on rosehips if you haven't already.  It has alot of good info.

I have checked the NGJ article and I have the magazine with the article and I just don't know if mine are still good if they don't turn red. Of course right now they are still green but I am hoping they will turn in the fall. Thanks for your help.

I never get ahold of the rosehips. Do they kind of go away after the petals come forth?

Rose petals can also be eaten. They can even be candied but I have never tried that yet.

My husband no longer buys me roses because I always eat them raw or make tea out of them. A salad with red clover tops and  rose petals in it sound good right now.

Here is one of many links to what flowers can  be eaten and recipes for them.

Rosehips form just under the calyx after the flower fades and falls off.

Here's an article on how to make rose hip conserve, it looks pretty easy and looks like something the kids would enjoy.

I made vitamin c candy out of mine.  I used a hard rock candy recipe and put ground dried rosehips in it.  The kids loved it.

My midwife recommended rosehips powder for my Rh- factor and for healing my uterus after my c-section.  I ordered some from Bulk Herb Store to grind myself.  Anybody know how much I should be taking a day?  A tsp?  A Tbsp?

I'm starting to plan my garden...and I want to try growing roses.  I am wondering, is there a preferred variety of roses for harvesting rosehips?  Can I use the plants from Homedepot or Lowes, or should I go to a special gardening center.  I do not have a green thumb, so your advice is greatly appreciated.

The best vitamin C sources come from the Rosa Canina (the Dog Rose) or more commonly, the other old shrub Rose known as the Rugosa Rose.

Can a person just stand at the rose bush and pig out on the rose hips/berries like we can raspberries?

Or do rosehips need to be eaten in small amounts?

Once I can get these pics off my husbands camera I will post them on WTM for a positive identification. But I'm certain I have  prairie rose bushes that are yielding rose hips right now.

DISCRIPTION of the rose hips AKA berries:

Right now in august they are green and hard. When I cut one open it has white seeds inside of them and kind of like a fur or hairy white stuff in there as well.

They are growing on those prairie rose bushes so I assume they have to be rose berries.

Does that discription sound like the insides of rose berries that yall have saw??

yes, that sounds like the inside of rosehips. But don't pick them until they are a nice pretty red color. The red color has something to do with the level of vitamin c.
also you could eat them but I don't think they taste all that good and all those seeds make it not exactly a good "berry".
you might find this interesting. I once picked a bunch of wild rose hips that had little tiny prickly hairs all over them. I can't remember the name of the rose plant that produces them. But when you dry them you  just rub them a little and all the prickly hairs fall off. The reason I picked them is they were huge. About the size of a cherry. A little smaller but not much.

Here is a link to the pictures I posted of what I assume to be rose hips. Could use yours and others input on them.

How can I prevent insect larva in my rosehips? I always have lots of rosehips, but many of them have the "worms" in them.  Tongue I wonder if there's something natural I can spray on the plants to stop them?
Thanks!

Why not soak the rosehips in a brine after harvesting?  I soak my veggies, especially necessary with broccoli, in a sink half full of cool water with about a teaspoon of sea salt dissolved in it.  The bugs come right out!

For preventing bugs, I have great success using a spray solution of water, pureed garlic and a bit of natural soap.

Please give me your thoughts and adive on the below. Thank you.

My rose berries are a  dark red now and soft. So Im picking them.

But I keep finding conflicting messages on if it is  safe or not safe to eat the entire rose hip. Some say the inner seeds and fur will make you sick. Others say it wont.

I really don't wanna sit around for hours on end picking the tiny seeds and hairs  out of them. Seems like a waste of time to me. And I dont have a juicer or one of those deseeder machines.

I wanna  boil them down to make a jelly and then use the left over berry as a vegetable with butter and whatever else spices them up for a side dish.

Please give me your thoughts and adive on all that. Thank you.

http://www.forestfarm.com/help/rosehips.htm

Here is a page with lots of rose hip recipes.  Mostly, I'm seeing them used in syrups or jams, with the fruits strained out.  But there is a puree recipe here that calls for you to cook and mash the whole rose hip, and then strain the final puree.

http://www.springvalleyroses.com/inthegarden/roserecipes.html
This site recommends 'preparing' the rose hips by removing the seeds before using them in recipes.

I would think that the seeds should be discarded.  Hair and seeds in a pod does not sound appetizing to me, no matter how heavenly the flavor.  I think it's a texture problem Wink  But if you want to use the entire batch of rose hips, the puree would be the easiest way to do that (especially with a foley food mill).
