I really like the recipe, too. I was wondering if anybody using the CO in toothpaste (or for the bath/washing/cleaning) had trouble with clogged drains. It seems my sink drain is getting slower & slower. Is the co solidifying in the pipes? Shocked DH wondered if the olive oil soap we use is collecting as scum in the septic system, also, but that's probably a different topic...

Hmmmm, now I hadn't thought about that. So far I haven't had a problem. Our bathroom sink has always clogged, but that's b/c dh keeps his hair very short..... as in, taking the clippers to his head about once every week or two. So, that plus his facial whiskers makes for a very slow drain. What I found that helps the most is one of those big pipe cleaners specifically designed for fixing clogged drains. It's gross (drain goo always makes me gag, but for some reason, I'm always the one who does it, even when I shared a bathroom w/ my brother at home), but it works!

I read somewhere on here about the benefits of using cayenne pepper or Tea Tree Oil to help with sensitive teeth, and that Peppermint EO causes increased tooth sensitivity.  Can someone please share with me their sources on this?  I just made my first batch of toothpaste using the xylitol recipe, but left out the peppermint EO and added about 1/8 tsp cayenne to it.  Haven't tried it yet...it's still cooling.  I have very sensitive teeth and want it to work well for my teeth.

Thanks!

The peppermint sensitivity is a new one to me. Thanks for the info. I haven't tried cayenne yet, but, apparently it's supposed to really help keep your teeth healthy. I need to try it.

One thing I have done is swap Birch EO for the peppermint. My DMIL passed it on to us. She got it from Forever Young. The Birch tree is where Xylitol comes from. The oil is amazing stuff! I can't remember all the great things is does. My DMIL gave me a quick run down of its stats. Here's something I found. What's also great is that is tastes like Wintergreen. Yum!

Yeah!!! I finally made a successful batch of toothpaste. I made some adjustments to the recipe. If anyone wants to try it, it has been Hubby (and kid) approved Grin.

1 T Coconut Oil
2 T Water
4 T Xylitol
8 T Baking Soda
70-80 drops of Peppermint Oil

In a double boiler (or over very low heart) dissolve the Xylitol in the water, stirring, of course. Add the coconut oil until melted. Stir in the pep oil. Then stir in the baking soda a T at a time to blend well. Pour into container and let cool.

I hope others will like this as well!!!

I modified this recipe again. I'm using Birch oil instead of peppermint. It's benefits are awesome. My MIL went to a Forever Young EO conference and got a fat notebook of info on all their oils. She passed a bottle onto me and I've been using it in our toothpaste. (Xylitol is from the Birch tree. Double bonus!) It tastes and smells wonderfully of wintergreen. Actually, when I compare it to my bottle of wintergreen, the wintergreen smells nasty; the Birch smells more like wintergreen. Anyway, just thought I'd mention it. Here's a little info.

I get mine from www.iherb.com, along with lots of other healthy foods and supplements.  They've got a great price on maple syrup too.

I made the above (er) recipe for the fam but with spearmint and they aren't diggin it!! probably because i had previously made it with just coconuit oil and spearmint and xylitol. course i didn't know how to dissolve the xylitol so they would get big clumps of it!!  Cheesy
anyways they're using it. Anyone else know a better way to dispense this? right now i have it in a little plastic container (i put the first in a nice glass jar but it was soon dropped onto the tile floor) and we just spoon it out and well...drip it onto our toothbrushes since it is so hot in the house it's melted. what does everyone else do?

Is the consistancy of this stuff compatible with a soap/plunger type dispenser? or would it need to be in a tub?

I had another thought.  If you don't want to use Peppermint and you don't have Birch, could you use clove oil instead?  And maybe use Peppermint tea instead of water for a bit of the minty flavor?

Is there a huge purpose for the coconut oil in the toothpaste? It just seems a bit too greasy for me. I also wonder about it in the drains.

The soap dispenser might work. Perhaps not in the winter time, however Wink. Mine always seems a little runny when I first make it, but it gets more toothpaste consistency the more we use it. Maybe if you added more water.....?

I bet clove and pep tea would be great!

This was the post that made me think of putting it in my toothpaste. I think she wrote more later on about it. Don't remember. Gives me clean smooth teeth. Plus, coconut oil is a wealth of health. Here's a quote from a web site I found:

"Helps prevent periodontal disease and tooth decay."

I haven't had a problem in my kids' sink so far. Only mine 'cause my husband clips his hair every 1 or 2 weeks and a lot of it goes down the drain Grin.

Are y'all using Young Living essential oils in the toothpaste or will any EO work?  Also, are you buying xylitol in powder, granuales, etc. Thanks!

Here's a recipe I made for "toothpaste" tooth oil.  It is a little spicy, but my 2yo ds likes to use it sometimes (most of the time he uses Young Living's Kidscents toothpaste).
2 tsp. coconut oil
36 drops peppermint  essential oil
36 drops spearmint essential oil (EO)
3 drops thyme EO
3 drops sweet marjoram EO
3 drops myrrh EO
3 drops clove EO
I use just 2 drops of this mixture on my toothbrush (I think that without the coconut oil, even 1 drop would be too spicy - and I haven't had a problem with the oils in my sink drains). I didn't make up the ingredient list.  I got it from the Clenzology tooth and gum solution by Garden of Life.  I had been using their tooth solution for brushing and rinsing because I want to avoid baking soda in toothpaste (I have receeding gums and my dentist said to avoid baking soda in toothpastes because it "opens-up" the porous nerve/root part of the tooth and makes them more sensitive- or something like that), but when I ran out I just looked at the ingredients and came up with the amounts on my own.

Whether you use Young Living EO or others, I think it's important to get the EOs from a reliable source that you trust since you will be using them in your mouth.
I used more clove EO than my recipe thinking it would make it taste better, and it kind of had a numbing effect  Lips Sealed
BTW, (off topic) I really like the Clenzology, AM/PM facial solutions by Garden of Life.  I really think it helps me to not get sick, even when others in the house are sick.

My Peppermint I was just using NOW brand. My Birch is from Forever Green. I got it from my MIL.

The Xylitol I got from iHerb. It's NOW's brand and it's in granules. I just dissolve it in the water before I add everything else.

Careful!  Acids can also wear enamels right off too. Smiley  Look into mouth ph...it has a lot to do with how healthy your teeth are, and whether or not they can remineralize.  I would be very gentle if using an acid rinse for removing plaque, and follow up with a rinse that neutralizes the ph (baking soda does this).

We have been using equal parts of baking soda and salt and then adding a bunch of cinnamon.  The cinnamon is good for your teeth and it also makes the tooth powder much more pleasant.

Birch essential oil is considered 'semi-toxic'.  I wouldn't be comfortable using it daily without some more research.

For a while I was using a mixture of baking soda, xylitol, and cayenne (ouch), and I've used plain soap before, too.  Tonight I'm making my first batch of toothpaste using the recipe posted earlier in this thread.

http://www.welltellme.com/discuss/index.php/topic,3787.msg81553.html#msg81553

I modified it a little.  I used 4 tsp. baking soda, 1 tsp. xylitol, and 1 tsp. sea salt.  I thought I'd put in some orange extract for flavor.  For soap I used Kiss My Face's olive oil soap.

I grind the xylitol in a coffee grinder before using it.  This is a must, because when I was using the powder, I found out the xylitol is too abrasive.  It tore up my gums.   Shocked I also grind the sea salt, for the same reason.

I'm looking forward to trying this, and seeing if it works well.  How odd to look forward to trying new toothpaste.   Cheesy

Update:  Boy, do my teeth feel clean.  The orange extract isn't strong enough to cover the soap taste, but it's not bad.

It was posted by Gwen on another thread but i just figured I'd make sure folks were seeing it here.  It is very similar to many of the recipes already here - just looked easier than dissolving xylitol and stuff.  Kiddos like it.

I used spearmint & cornmint.  I like the coconut oil base.  Feels nice!

  Calcium Bentonite Clay
« Reply #172 on: February 02, 2010, 08:57:30 PM » by rainygladness
I read through this entire thread and have been researching homemade toothpaste on the web for a few days now.
We've been using Tom's of Maine for many years and while we like it and it's worked great, it's over $4 bucks a tube and I'd like to try making our own for a LOT less.  Grin

So I found a recipe on the web that uses calcium bentonite clay as the main ingredient and I was intrigued! Has anyone ever heard of this? Or better yet, tried it?!

The recipe was given by a mom who claims the calcium in the clay works to actually re-calcify the teeth as well as absorb bacteria, etc.

Anyway,...I'm not an herbal guru, but doesn't that make sense?

But I'd like to know more about the abrasive aspects of bentonite clay, if any, on tooth enamel.  It appears pretty silky smooth.  Any thoughts?

PS
I have read a LOT of places that baking soda, when used long term, definitely does wear away tooth enamel leaving extremely "thin" and sensitive teeth.  And that glycerin prevents the re-enameling of teeth.  Double whammy!!  Sad  So I'm staying away from those two ingredients for sure.

Any thoughts??

I wasn't sure what calcium bentonite clay meant as opposed to the pure bentonite clay I have on hand so looked it up. If anyone else is interested try this article.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bentonite

Sounds interesting. I certainly agree with you on both the baking soda and glycerin observations! The thought of brushing with the stuff is a bit gross and since dental health is an inside out issue, I doubt that a few minutes contact with the clay will help re-calcify teeth. Still, the idea of it for the cleansing properties intrigues me and I may just put some on a tooth brush soon to see what happens.
Be sure to let us know if you try this and I'm also curious to see the whole recipe.  Smiley

Thanks boysmama, you've bolstered my confidence to give it a try.  Smiley

HB -- yeah mudpaste! Should be tasty! lol  Grin  Roll Eyes I'll bet it's not much "muddier" than that of baking soda, right? Tongue Hope it tastes a little better than that horrid tasting stuff.  As long as I don't gag, I can handle it.

It's funny -- I had bought the calcium bentonite clay at the healthfood store a month ago just to have on hand in my health aid arsenal. Now I'm glad I had it on hand for trying this with. If it makes our teeth harder and stronger, I'll be thrilled!  Cool So far I think I'll just warm some water, melt the xylitol in it add the clay and peppermint oil and stir till pasty!

I thought of adding some coconut oil too but some ladies here suggested it might be a drain clogger so...not sure it's worth trying.  Plus my husband said that the thought of brushing with oil was NOT appealing to him.  Cheesy
I'll keep you posted on the results.  Wink

Ok, I made my toothpaste over a week ago and it's been great!

It was pretty easy to make: gently warmed some water and xylitol in a double boiler (glass bowl atop a small saucepan) till it dissolved then mixed it into the calcium bentonite clay. We added 24 drops of peppermint oil and stirred with a small wooden spoon.
**IMPORTANT: NEVER use anything METAL when using bentonite clay as it absorbs it instantly. Use only glass, plastic or wooden bowls or utensils.

The color was hard to get used to at first. Looked kinda greenish-greyish...   Roll Eyes  But now it just looks good and "earthy" to me. Healthy. I would think this would be an excellent toothpaste for someone who has amalgam fillings or has just gotten them removed.

But anyway, just wanted to report that it tastes great and does a bang up job at cleaning.  My teeth look whiter and it's only been a week. See ? --->  Grin   haha
It does not appear to be a harsh agent to tooth enamel at all, so I am pleased.  So far, so good!
I'll post the measurements I used later. Gotta run now.

Ok--so now this is particularly weird!  When I was researching about the Detox formula I put together and am taking, I discovered that some people brush their teeth with ACTIVATED CHARCOAL.  What do you think about that. . . . the clay is far reaching enough for me. . . . . but really Charcoal on your teeth. . . . .I have lots of extra and am very tempted to try . . . .

Charcoal for a detox...like for amalgam removal? Or are you talking about people using it out of preference? Cuz I can't see a reason to use it just for just plain old toothbrushing. (yuk!)

But if someone was needing to chelate like crazy...maybe. The dentist who removed my mercury/amalgam fillings gave me charcoal to swish with and then swallow. (shudder) It sure does its job great but swallowing it was...not great. lol

I agree - the clay is enough of a stretch for this girl!  Cheesy
