A young man I know now studying to be a medical student once mentioned to me that peroxide was very unstable and that he would never use it in his mouth...yet my husband's dentist and friend recommended the use of it...does anyone know more?
and wouldn't xylitol be a better alternative than glycerin?

[gabe here] Compared to other molecules, peroxide is unstable... but I have no idea why that would make any difference as to why or why not one should put it in one's mouth. As a matter off fact, this is exactly why it is useful for things like nipping a sore throat in the bud, or cleaning teeth.

Hydrogen peroxide is water with an extra oxygen molecule. The beauty of it is that the extra oxygen likes to "jump free" and in so doing, usually oxidizes (burns) something else in the vicinity... like bacteria, food particles, etc. As an added benefit, it foams as it does this. This naturally "debrides" the area... it lifts the dead stuff free so that it can easily be rinsed out... or swallowed and processed.

Most publicly available Hydrogen Peroxide is 3% solution which can possibly burn mucus membranes (the mouth, for example) if used in full strength... but in dilute solution is not going to cause problems...

Just like every other thing discussed on WTM (essential oils, cooking recipes, vitamins, etc) it must be used with knowledge or there could be negative consequences... but not nearly as potentially dangerous as bleach for instance... or phyto-estrogen and antibiotic packed homogenized store shelf milk.

I am trying the toothsoap from perfect prescription, and they now have toothsoap with raw honey in it. I told my kids I would get them some of that! They used to have a problem spitting regular toothpaste out, but NO PROBLEM with the toothsoap! Grin

I have tried hydrogen peroxide in my mouth and it does help get rid of ulcers, and mouth sores/infections. But I did not dilute it. I just put it straight on a paper towel and onto my sore/infection and hold it there for a minute give or take. I read that if you use hydrogen Peroxide in your mouth for too many days in a row, it will turn your tougue black. Tongue

Do you have a link for the, "black tongue after too many days of H2O2?" When I googled "Hydrogen Peroxide Black Tongue" I got link after link recommending the use of Hydrogen Peroxide to get rid of the black tongue thing...

Oh my  goodness! I just got the book in the mail called "The Perfect Prescription for your teeth" and I thought I read it in there. Let  me check real quick what it says.........

Ok Im back, here is  an exact quote from the little booklet I got in the mail from the toothsoap poeple....

"A note about Hydrogen Peroxide mouth rinses that are touted as the solution for bad breath. (e.g.: 3% hydrogen peroxide mixed with equal amounts water, ect.): In the book "Your Beautiful Self" by the editors of Prevention Magazine it states,"Aside from the possibility that it may cause oral irritation, continued use of peroxide can lead to blackening of  your tounge" They recommend not using hydrogen peroxide rinses in the mouth longer than 8-10 days if you do use them"

So I guess that is not much information about it. And its quoted from another book, too so HuhHuh? I just happen to notice it when I was reading through the booklet from the same place I got my Toothsoap.

I have been rinsing a few times a week with diluted hydogen peroxide (1:1, water:peroxide 3%), for a month or so.  No problems here with black hairy tongue.  Just whiter teeth and healthier gums.  I think it is very helpful after flossing.

...yeah, I have used hydrogen peroxide for years. Sometimes daily, sometimes once a week... and, in my personal experience it has not caused a black hairy tongue...

Also, the black hairy tongue symptom is (according to the sites I looked through) generally caused by bacteria or yeast growth in the mouth...

I am not saying that it is impossible that H2O2 would cause this, but I cannot see how...

Mint Tooth Paste Recipe
(I think I'm going to try this one.  I might try adding some cloves and/or lavender as well.)

Ingredients:

    * 6 teaspoons baking soda
    * 1/3 teaspoon salt
    * 4 teaspoons glycerin
    * 15 drops peppermint or wintergreen extract

Directions:

Mix thoroughly. Should be a tooth paste consistency. Store in a container. You'll be surprised with how fresh your mouth feels.

I made this using Coconut Oil instead of glycerin and I also added some cayenne to it.  Like is so far.  One of my five likes it.  The rest will just have to get used to it! Wink

I was using just bs for a while, but it IS rather nasty tasting if it hits your tongue!  I recently added salt to it, as well as black walnut powder.  Still kind of nasty, so then I added some stevia powder to it, and now it's not too bad.  Would like to add some mint eventually (when I can afford it) so that dh will be more inclined to use it.  We ran out of regular tp for a few days, and he kept complaining about the bs mix, so I "let" him pick out some new tp.
I just googled bwp, and the top site on the list was the Bulk Herb store!  How cool it that?  It doesn't mention anything about using it for teeth, though, so here are a couple of other quotes/links:
Powdered black walnut has been used to clean teeth and tighten gums.
For extra help with gum and tooth problems, add a little extra black walnut powder.

When I eat anything sweet my teeth just HURT something awful. Sometimes bad enough I feel like taking Tylenol. What is the reason for this? It has happened no matter the tooth product I use. (BS,tooth soap, several toothpastes, just a brush, etc)

Is it lack of good enamel? I have never had a cavity. But always sensitive teeth. Just the last yr or so it is intensified. Undecided

If the pain is along the sides of the tooth it could be recessed gum lines, where the root is beginning to show.  I deal with that.  It comes from brushing too hard.  The dentist had me switch to a Sonic Care toothbrush and that has helped alot.  But I only use it at night, I just can't stand all that buzzing around in my mouth first thing in the morning.  Also, I use a toothpaste with xylitol, aloe, and no SLS.  Those two things have helped tremendously.  The other option is that it could be just the beginning of a cavity, but I don't think that would cause quite so much pain as what you described.

I am gonna be making dentist app. for the whole family soon.  I do not do fluoride and mercury fillings so I am scared to find a dentist. I need to just start calling and saying are you willing to let me not use these things...   Tongue

We started going to a new dentist last year, they've got everything high tech and cutting edge in there.  I asked about mercury fillings and they said they only do the white fillings now.  And last time, I had just the beginning of a cavity and they opted to do a sealant (like the kind they put on kids teeth) instead of a full filling.

Modified 4/28/08

Yeah!!! I finally made a successful batch of toothpaste. I made some adjustments to the recipe. If anyone wants to try it, it has been Hubby (and kid) approved Grin.

1 T Coconut Oil
2 T Water
4 T Xylitol
8 T Baking Soda
70-80 drops of Peppermint Oil

In a double boiler (or over very low heart) dissolve the Xylitol in the water, stirring, of course. Add the coconut oil until melted. Stir in the pep oil. Then stir in the baking soda a T at a time to blend well. Pour into container and let cool.

I hope others will like this as well!!!

Here is a link to Dom's (from Dom's kefir insite) tooth-saving paste recipe.  He also sells toothpaste packets.

http://users.chariot.net.au:80/~dna/toothpaste/toothpaste.htm

It says:

Here you will find a recipe for a natural toothpaste, which may help with tooth sensitivity due to the poor condition of tooth enamel, or for the prevention of sensitive teeth and tooth enamel erosion. This toothpaste has also shown to eliminate bleeding of the gums, if the paste is used on a daily basis. The tooth paste can remove most stains on the teeth, such as those caused by cigarette smoking. It will strengthen tooth enamel and gums, and heal, yes heal pre-existing tooth decay [such as in my case]. The tooth-saving paste should leave a very fine film of oil over the surface of the teeth, which is undetectable. This acts as an ongoing protective barrier or film for the teeth, for some hours after brushing followed by flossing the teeth.

What toothpaste do you use for small children who can't spit( needs to be safe if swallowed). I would like something that I can make at home.  I have tried Jason's, Burts Bees etc. but my kids always say the taste is too hot. Any suggestions?

This is what I make...my 2yo dd uses it

6 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
5 tsp coconut oil (or glycerin)
15 drops peppermint EO
1/8 tsp cayenne

My kids and I love it.  It's not "hot" with the cayenne in there.  And the cayenne really helped with swollen gums when I was pg.  My teeth feel cleaner also.

Do you - by chance - use chewable vitamin C?  I had exTREMEly sensitive teeth (esp. around the gumline) after using the chewable vitamin C for only about two weeks.  My dad is a periodontist, so I called him up and he said that if I stopped chewing up citric acid (!), my teeth should stop being sensitive within a month or so.  And, as usual, he was right.  Grin <--pearly whites!

Em, I read on toothsoap.com that glycerine, which is found in pretty much all natural toothpaste, sticks to the teeth and prevents enamel growth. Thus sensitive teeth. I too have sensitive teeth and esp. think about it when using a toothpaste or anything with baking soda in. We've recently been using an oil only (co, oo, and eo's) toothpaste (soap) and I've noticed improvement. I'm still experimenting and will report again if I don't forget. Smiley

2 T Coconut Oil (will do less, maybe only 1 T next time)
2 T Water (maybe less here as well w/less c.oil  Undecided)
4 T Xylitol
8 T Baking Soda
60 drops of Pep Oil (will do more next time, maybe 80/I'll also measure out 80 drops so I don't have to count that many Tongue)

Anyway, hope others will like this as well!!!

Yum!  I made this yesterday, and it's a big hit in our family!  I ended up using 1 T coconut oil and 2 T water, but everything else was the same.  It was great!  Thanks so much for this posting!

I really like the recipe, too. I was wondering if anybody using the CO in toothpaste (or for the bath/washing/cleaning) had trouble with clogged drains. It seems my sink drain is getting slower & slower. Is the co solidifying in the pipes? Shocked DH wondered if the olive oil soap we use is collecting as scum in the septic system, also, but that's probably a different topic...
