I just got back from the chiro, and we finally did an x-ray on my big toe b/c it still hurts from a bad auto accident I was in.  There was no time to break, and I was wearing sandals, so hitting someone straight on at about 50-60 mph, with my foot on the gas pedal, well, that all makes sense to me.  It was hurting REALLY bad for about a week, but has gotten better, just not all the way better, and it has been 1.5 months.  Still, I see improvement, but it is immobilizing me from physical activity.  ANYWAY, this is GOUT related b/c we did x-rays today and no broken anything.  I was shocked.  He says there are still ligaments in there, so who knows what I messed up, which will take time to heal, but he said we also may be looking at GOUT.  It just makes no sense to me, so I wanted your guys input.  I am not obese, no arthritis, healthy, and this was FROM the car wreck, which he knows that.  My question is could an impact CAUSE GOUT???  I mean, the impact caused this, not my diet.  I am taking cranberry per his instructions, but he said it in a way as a slight possibility, but to me it seems NO possibility from what I have read about gout?  I like this doc, but he seems way off base here.  Any thoughts?

My first response was, "stupid chiro." Sorry........ Tongue but then i remembered that my dh's gout attacks ONLY started after he had broke his feet. I am now completely confused. Is it actually gout or is it something that acts like gout, such as psuedo gout? Maybe your chiro isn't so stupid..................hmmm, i'll have to do some research. Gout is NOT fun, incredibly painful and will flare up out of nowhere. Literally.

So far I have looked at some really disgusting pics online.  This totally does not seem like what I have, but the toe still aches some.  Does your husband have the red inflammation and all that?  Everything I have read about gout, I am not even close.  But could this turn into gout?  Is that what the chiro is concerned about?  That this is the beginning of gout?  Gout is just such a gross word to even say!  Doesn't it sound gross?  Gout?

I don't see how it's possible for you to have gout because you eat such a healthy diet and drink so much water.  You're also not overweight or prone to too much alcohol.  I guess it could be from too much asparagus or mushrooms:

"Gout occurs when urate crystals accumulate around your joint, causing the inflammation and intense pain of a gout attack. Urate crystals can form when you have high levels of uric acid in your blood. Your body produces uric acid when it breaks down purines, substances that are found naturally in your body, as well as in certain foods, such as organ meats, anchovies, herring, asparagus and mushrooms."

BTW Pete went to a great foot doc (when he hurt his ankle) if you want his #.Very honest, knowledgable and practical.  I honestly think you probably have a sprain related to the accident and would see a foot specialist.  If you brought your own x-rays from your chiro then he'd only charge you for the visit, which is very thorough and $75 if I remember.  If you tell him you're self pay he'll probably cut you a deal.

And yes, "gout" is a disgusting word.   Cheesy

My Dad has gout and the only change in diet was starting to drink Kombucha.  My mom just started making it and uses 3 or 4 green tea bags with one black tea bag.  Their Kombucha is very strong in taste.     I could not drink it because it was so strong.  Of course he went to the Dr. and they told him a lot of the same things people have mentioned here about the acid and meat.   Could the Kombucha she is making be wrong and causing his gout?Huh  Any help on this would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I have also been recently diagnosed with gout.  Am wondering if the kombucha is acting as a diuretic and you dad needs to drink more water.  If he is detoxing from the kombucha it could be causing the problems.  BUT I have no "knowledge" about this, just a guess.

My gout seems only to be caused by coffee and chocolate.  Sigh.....

One of the causes of gout is eating a diet high in purines if you are unable to process those purines.  They become uric acid which then accumulates in the small joints of the body (usually).

Here is a list of foods with purine levels.

Below is a list of high, medium, low purine foods. Purines in your diet will cause/exacerbate gout.

High-purine foods: Anchovies, Roe (fish eggs), Fish such as herring, mackerel and sardines, Scallops and mussels, Game meats, like goose, duck, and partridge, Organ meats: brains, heart, kidney, liver, and sweetbreads, Meat extracts, Mincemeat, Broth, bouillon, and consomme, Gravy, Yeast (baker's and brewer's) taken in the form of a supplement.

Medium-purine foods: Fish and shellfish not on the high purine list above, Poultry foods not on the high purine list above, Beef, lamb, pork, and other red meats not on the high purine list above, Dried beans, peas, lentils, Asparagus, Mushrooms, Spinach, Cauliflower, Green peas, Oats and oatmeal, Wheat germ and bran, Whole grain breads and cereals.

They should be avoided especially during an attack.

Food that are high in antioxidants such as blackberries, cherries, alfalfa, celery, and citrus are sometimes considered to be good choices for helping with gout.

He further tells us that if an ounce of these flowers be put into a pint of brandy and let to stand six weeks, the resultant tincture will in a great measure prevent the increase of gravel - and give great relief in gout. 'The celebrated Baron Haller has found vast benefit by this; and myself have very happily followed his example.'

Found this site recently:

http://www.best-gout-remedies.com/home-remedies-for-gout.html

Talks a lot about water water water water.

I am doing the water cure to see how much it helps.  Seems like every problem I have could be cured by the water cure .... hmmmmmmm ..... should tell me something about my water drinking habit - or lack thereof.

I'm sure it's been mentioned, but sour cherries are good for gout...especially Montmorency ones.
