Oh and a tip for everyone... Instead of folding in the long sides like you normally would, I fold the prefolds into thirds the short way and they fit into the medium G diaper perfectly!

WR
fold it the short way!  i never would've thought of that!!  i'll have to try that today.  i ordered two starter packs of gdiapers about 6 months ago, but my son's poop always leaked onto the liner and the cover - using both the disposable inserts and the pre-folds.  i checked and double checked all the fitting instructions on the website, but still couldn't get it to work right.  then the velcro tore off one of the covers.  the company said they would replace it if i mail it back in, but i haven't gotten to the post office, yet.  needless to say, i got frustrated and haven't used them in a while.  i've been looking at the hemp inserts, and they look fairly easy to sew (even with my incredibly limited sewing ability).  so, i might give that a shot.  but i'll try folding the pre-folds the other way, first.  thanks!!

I have been using the G-diapers for about 5 months now, and LOVE them. I bought the size L, they are easy to adjust and will last a long time.
Then I used the disposable diaper that came with them,  as a pattern, had my kids cut out 30 of the rectangle pattern. Then cut 60 smaller rectangles from old towels, to fit inside of the bigger rectangle. Sew two pieces of towel rectangles, one on top of the other (zigzag stitch) together onto one inside of large rectangle, then put the other large rectangle on top, wrong sides together (just like a big sandwich Smiley)and zigzag all the way around. And that's it, they work great and are so cute!!! The scrapes that were left over, the kids cut out wipes, I put two together then just zigzag stitched around the outside.  We used a cute boy hunting flannel material. You could use flannel or fleece, both are good for diapers.  I really had fun making these because they were so easy and the kids like to see me using them, since they helped to make them.
P.s. Since the kids cut them all out and I can't do much in the way of sewing, these inserts are not perfect looking, but they are cute and work great!!!!!

Where can I get the cotton baby one size inserts?  I have been looking into the Bum Genius cloth diapers, but they are really spendy.  I am interested in g diapers, but I hate the price of the inserts.  It doesn't make any sense to me for the price factor.

annikaed, check the first couple pages of this thread, there is a link for the cottonbabies website for the inserts in there several times.

I like the gdipe pants so far.  I bought the starter kits, which came with 2 pairs of pants, 4 liners and the disposable inserts.

I use the pants with the liners snapped in and then put various cloths inside instead of the disposable inserts- WR suggested the Gerber cloths you can get at Wal-mart and they are working just fine.  You just gotta fold them to fit in the liner.

May I ask, is there a problem with the microfiber touching baby's bum?
I just bought these and am now reading this wondering if I need to buy something else.  Please enlighten me?

The microfiber shouldn't touch the baby's skin. It is so absorbent that it can absorb the oils on the baby's skin, and cause dryness and rashes. I don't know if you've felt it before, but it doesn't feel all that great, either. It works great as an inside layer though, just put a layer of something over it, like flannel maybe. HTH  Grin

I just received my g diapers and I really like them.  I ordered the cotton babies inserts but they haven't come yet so I have been using the disposable inserts to practice.  I looked on their website at the FAQ's and they do recommend a specific cloth insert.  If you look at www.cottonwoodbaby.com
and look at the inserts they have one designed perfectly for the little g pant.  Just another option for a cloth insert if you are interested.

I have been cloth diapering for three days now and here is what has happened. I researched this a lot before I made the investment because I really wanted to do the best thing for dd and the whole family. I couldn't convince dh to invest in $450 worth of one size AIO's so after being introduced to the idea on WTM I figured another great option would be to get the gdiapers with inserts. We bought a starter kit and two extra gdiapers(~$60), 12 inserts at www.cottonwoodbaby.com made specifically for gdiapers (~$60), and 10 never used gerber cotton prefolds that I bought from a friend for 1.00. All in all it costed about $120 to go from nothing to fully ready. I should also note that I think I have tried about every possible way of making cloth wipes (have been bery busy on the sewing machine) and I like one layer of flannel zig zagged around the sides for now and a wash cloth with hooded towel material on the back for when she starts on solid foods.

So far I love cloth diapering! I was so excited to get them and get started and I think it is so fun! At first I was a little discouraged because it was a lot of work to try to load the gdiaper while my 5 month old dd was squirming all over the place. That is when I went to the gdiaper website and they suggest preloading the diapers with the inserts after changing the diaper. It goes like this...dd starts wearing green and I pre-load the brown. When I change her diaper I take off the green and set it aside, I put her in the brown and then put the soiled insert and wipe from the green diaper in the pail and pre-load the green for the next diaper change. It is fast and efficient, I like it a lot!

My problem is this... I find that the diaper cover and her clothes get damp. I really make sure that there is a good seal and I can't see that she has been leaking anywhere. I don't think the dampness even really smells like pee. I was wondering if any of you have ever had this problem and if so what did you figure was the cause? My mom and I thought maybe the plastic insert may be sweating? This is the only thing I don't like about the gdiapers so far. Please help if you have any input in this area!

I have also experienced this.  It mostly is when ds gets up from a nap, all sweaty under the blankets and with a wet (inside) diaper, only the exterior of the gpants are also sweaty feeling.  It's an overall barely damp feeling, right?

I have interpreted it as a good thing, as in, the dipes are "breathing."  I know I don't want an airtight system, as this will only contribute to rashes/skin problems.

The kind ladies at Lotions and Notions (link at the top of the page) made some wonderful flannel flats for me that are just for this purpose!

I gave them the measurements I wanted and they whipped 'em right up.

Much cheaper than the ones they sell at cottonbabies site, and they even match my g dipes!!   Cool

So I just wrap the insert up with the flannel flat.

Adds absorbancy and keeps microfiber off of the skin.

(This pic doesn't actually have the insert in, only the flat.)

This system (I think) is way too big for newborns, but now that ds is 8 weeks, this is what I do for the nighttime dipe.  During the day, it works fine for me to just use the gerber cotton flats inside the gdipe liner and it's not quite as bulky.

I have 2 MED G Diapers, 4 snap in liners, and 12 inserts made specifically for G Diapers. The covers and liners were purchased new from www.gdiapers.com and the G Diaper inserts were purchased from www.cottonwoodbaby.com. I purchased all of these new and I used them for 1 month. There is some light staining on a couple of the liners but there are no stains on any of the covers or inserts. Some of the inserts have NEVER been used! I washed all of these according to instruction using Charlies Laundry Soap which contains no dyes, softeners, etc. and I never used bleach. I also dryed them on the clothes line outside as much as possible. I am selling this set for $80.00 plus $4.00 shipping.
If you would like to see a picture of them please pm me and I will find a way to send one to you.

Judith,
I did like using G diapers because they are cost efficient, easy to use, and I don't remember her ever leaking messes onto her clothes. I totally fell in love with cloth diapering in a short time using this system. There were a few down falls though. First of all she couldn't wear them at night because she would leak through so I had to use disposables still at night, and the covers got a little damp because the liners had a tendency to sweat. The dampness never smelled like pee so I am convinced that the liner started to sweat when the insert on the other side became moist. I just couldn't get over that even after a couple weeks of doing it. That made me order one each of a Motherease and a Bum genius. The Bum genius are a bit more expensive but she can wear them through the night which eliminates the need for disposables at all and she doesn't get moist outside of the cover.  Thank you for the inquiry. G diapers really are a great diapering system, I just happened to find another system that I like better.

I just wanted to post and say that I got the size small g-diapers for our new baby, and I ordered the newborn size cloth diapers (orange stitching) from green mountain diapers, and they fit right in.
http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/diapers.htm
When my 2yo was small I used medium g-diapers, and I found that the regular gerber prefold diapers fit in there if you lay them horizontaly, and fold them in thirds that way rather than the normal way.  I really like this system! Wanted to share what works for me.  Hope this helps someone

I love my gdiaper covers!  I havent been "clothing" for long but finally with my 3rd, i am doing it full time.  Here is by story:

I found 4 lrg gdiapers off of craigslist (they run small I think), then i ordered lrg prefolds off of raglady.com.  The prefolds arent the same absorbency as on cloth sites but they are .75 cheaper a piece and when you order 3 doz.....75 cents adds up.

So i am all set!  I prefer the gdiapers to my bummis b/c when ds has a blow-out i dont have to throw the whole cover in the laundry just the liner(for the most part).  I just change the liner and away we go.  The prefolds work great when folded into 3rds on the short end and the gdiaper cover holds the prefold in place.

The only thing that i dont like about the covers is that i dont think they would last as long as a prowrap or bummis cover.  So if you're thinking long term then maybe go with them.  Also, if you order them, they do run small.  I know that the shape of the baby is a factor also but for example my ds is about 20 lbs and he is in the lrg size.  They say they are for 26+ lbs and he was in them at 17 lbs.

I hope this helps..i know it can be overwhelming when you're first starting out but "clothing" is such a personal thing and a journey to see what works.

When I do wash my covers, (which isn't very often) I don't put them in the dryer (I don't dry the liners either).  Maybe yours shrunk in the dryer? I haven't noticed mine running small

Quick question for you gdiaper users!!! Do any of you have problems with the diaper cover becoming damp while using it? I use them occasionally, and when my son pees, I notice that the cover gets damp if I keep using it throughout the day...and so do his pants! So I have to switch to an entirely new cover to let the previouse one dry before putting it back on him.

I haven't noticed that.  I usually switch covers with each change though.  I have one loaded and ready to go waiting on the changing table, and after the diaper change, I re-load the old one, and leave it there for the next change.  I have used the same cover all day before without noticing that though.

I've been trying to switch my covers with each change as well, but I just wasn't sure why they were feeling damp anyway. Maybe I'm leaving them on him too long...I'm used to disposables I guess! I'm using some prefolds and some regular birdseye cloth as my inserts, I don't know if that'd have anything to do with it??
