nutribiotic sells a 32 oz (nutribiotic is 33% citradel beeyoutifuls is 66%) but you can get the 32 oz for like 50 bucks w/ shiping at www.allhealthtrends.com comes to like 1.56/pz I think (you have to remember beeyoutiful's is 2x as strong but still even at 3.12/oz including shipping it would be cheaper...as to your article...gse is something I've currently been trying to study and time hasn't permitted much. hoping gabe will come on and say something wise about it Smiley

I don't have any definitive answers for you and there is alot of controversy about this product, but I am personally leery of the product and always have been.  I use it on occasion for topical use and I even tried it a couple of times internally for a cough and lived to tell about it  Cheesy , but I read in another article about how it affects the body in much the same way full spectrum antibiotics do in that it doesn't discern between good and bad bacteria in it's killing spree  Grin

GSE is not a natural product by definition based on everything I've read.  There is chemical synthesis, but I wouldn't discount it's safety or it's effectiveness based on this fact.  My main concerns still lie in the fact that it has the potential to upset the flora in the gut and having had many issues with yeast and leaky gut, I want to avoid any product whether natural or not if it's going to upset this balance.

Thank you, HB.  The book Herbal Antibiotics lists GSE and garlic as the two strongest herbs with antibacterial actions.  I ordered GSE from Beeyoutiful.  I'll probably use it mostly for external purposes, with internally on occasion.

Sometimes it seems the more you research something, the more confused you become.  Huh Tongue

GSE is reputed to be antifungal, so it probably would kill yeast, but my theory and research says that it might also kill everything else.  So if there's nothing else taking up residence when the yeast come back (and they inevitably will), they will take over again in the nice empty real estate with no other occupants.  Grin

This is still conjecture on my part, I've not been able to find much proof either way, just a few scattered articles and none of them say exactly the same thing.

I guess I figure there are other products with less controversy that I don't have to wonder or worry about, so I use those instead.

My PROBLEM is I trust you.  Cheesy  I was just disppointed b/c I thought it was natural.  I have given to my fam when they seem to be getting tummy virus or something.  Seems to "nip it."  We all have kefir a couple times a week atleat except my oldest son.  He doesn't like it at all.  Not sure if that is enough but the only one that takes the GSE often is my husband.

Well, I'm honored that you put your trust in me, but on this topic I'm really on the fence.  Gabe and Beka, I believe feel differently about it and maybe have access to better research that I've yet to read, so since I'm just not sure, I just avoid it mostly.

So, HB...are you saying that in your opinion GSE/C is too strong to take internally? (Basically the same as a broad-spectrum antibiotic.) What do you think about using it externally as a cleaning solution, in laundry, etc.? That is all I have been using for so far.

I too am prone to yeast in its many unwelcome forms, so if GSE acts as an indiscriminate antibiotic, I'd better not chance it.

Well this is only my opinion.  There is a lot of speculation on both sides, but I seldom use anything antibiotic or antibacterial either inside or out.  I bleach my toilet and nothing else (can't stand the smell  Tongue ), but as far as germs on the floor, my skin, the counter, etc, I use nothing stronger than baking soda, soap, water and/or vinegar.  I think germs are our friends.   Grin

I do use GSE in place of iodine for small abrasions like cat scratches, cuts from chicken wire  Roll Eyes, splinters, etc.  It doesn't sting and it prevents the spread of infection from such injuries, but this is the only thing I use it for.  I use iodine on myself, but my poor children can't handle the "burn".   Shocked

Someone tell me what they think of this article, please.

http://www.terressentials.com/truthaboutgse.html

That article was actually the first I ever read on Grapefruit Seed Extract, probably a couple of years ago, so that was my "introduction" to GSE. I was looking for skincare products that were truly healthy, and it seemed like most of the natural ones included GSE, but I've always made it a point to avoid it.

Since then, though, I've heard a lot of good things about GSE, so I don't know what to think. I guess I'm at a point where I would accept the minimal amount that would be in a facial cream, or maybe use it in my laundry, but I'm not ready to take it internally.

Sometimes research gets very frustrating, because the more I "learn", the less I'm sure of. But... just to stir the pot a bit, here's a quote from www.greenridgeherbals.com.

"What about rumors that Grapefruit Seed Extract contains chemicals?
Newsgroups and email groups have received postings to the effect that GSE contains Triclosan, Benzelthonium Chloride, or Methyl Paraben. Is this simple error or a deliberate attempt to scare people away from using natural products? The source of this type of report comes from both Germany and Japan, not the US. The reason these chemicals have shown up in their studies is that GSE is very similar in molecular weight to both Benzelthonium Chloride and Triclosan, both of which are effective disinfectants, but are toxic to human and animal life. In Germany their test (which is not well documented at all) for BC, Triclosan, and M.Paraben came up positive (which is more correctly called a "false positive") and in Japan, the same is happening for Triclosan. USDA found benzelthonium chloride in its 2001 test. These are not US companies. Whereas the company we purchase GSE from is based in the United States.
A few years ago, our manufacturer of GSE began specifically testing each batch of GSE for the absense of chemicals, and providing a Certificate of Analysis to that effect. The truth is, if GSE really contained chemical preservatives like parabens, it would make our products last for indefinately. Our products enhanced with GSE only stay good for 1-2 years, then they go rancid because they are made with fresh, natural ingredients. If they contained parabens they would never go bad.
The truth is, GSE is not only effective as a natural preservative, it has been in use for decades and recommended by many high profile doctors and healthcare professionals. If these allegations had any validity, there certainly would be a history of complaints and judgements against the product, and it would have been removed from the market many years ago. The US FDA made inspections of our supplier's manufacturing facility back in the 1990's and found no chemical preservatives; and our manufacturer tells us that the formula is exactly the same today."

AND, if that's not enough, I also remember reading something (can't find the source) about the difference between using organic grapefruit seed extract versus regular, as in one would be okay, and the other not-so-great for you.

Sympathical Formulas lists their GSE (used in their products) as USDA certified organic. So it has to exist.  Smiley

I haven't read through the whole thread yet (so maybe the answer is already here), but has anyone tried making soap with GSE in it? Would the GSE survive the process?

During the weeks that we spent at the hospital, I and my children were exposed to the stomach flu.  I was exposed pretty good considering I stayed in the same hotel room with the one who had it.  I begged the Lord to please keep us from getting the bug since I had to be at the hospital with dh and my kiddos were being watched by someone else.  Just a week or two prior I had received my GSE in the mail and had been learning how it can be used against stomach flu.  My children and I took it for almost a week and none of us came down with the flu!  Grin Grin Grin  The others who had been exposed came down with it a few days later.  Tongue

I'm not sure if it was just the power of the Lord or if it was the GSE.  Either way, the credit goes to God because He brought the GSE to my attention just weeks before.  I'm definitely going to try it again when I know we've been exposed to a stomach flu.  Just thought I'd share that little tidbit with you ladies!  Smiley

I gave my toddler GSE like this......The now brand of Superkids, I measured it into a measuring spoon, like 1/2-1 tsp and then I took the GSE and dropped a few drops on top of it. I quickly put it in his mouth and told them to swallow. Then chased it with juice, ect. WOrked pretty well!!

I gave my less-than-1yo GSE solution in a syringe.  I mixed several drops of GSE in a small amount of water and loaded it into a syringe.  Then I held ds tightly and squirted the GSE into his cheek.  A nice treat or drink would always follow quickly.  Not milk, since that would buffer the acid.

Here are ways that did NOT work:  Put a drop on my finger and wipe it directly into his mouth.  (That made him vomit.)  Put a drop or two in a spoonful of delightful food.  (That made him shun his favorite foods.)  Put drops in his drink.  (That promoted dehydration.)

I have a GSE victory story!  Hubs has had a cold for almost a week.  He seemed to be better, but then had more crud, sore ear and irritated tubes and glands.  I gave him a few drops of GSE in olive oil in his ears and the next morning, all was well!  I also rubbed Winter Breeze all over his neck and behind his ears.

LOVE that stuff!  I use GSE in my home made hand soap, also.

I believe I checked pretty well but didn't see the answer to this question.  Has anyone ever actually used it in a nebulizer as a respiratory therapy?  My children all have a "virus?" that has lasted since the end of November and we are still fighting it.  Have had to resort giving my dd albuterol treatments and would like something more "natural".  Has anyone had any adverse affects from this? Please Help.....

Do your research on this,  but some poeple use GSE in nebulizers. One drop GSE in 1 oz saline water  was noted in the following quote...

Quote from http://www.nutriteam.com/gsewhat.html

One clinic in Southern California has reportedly acquired GSE to use in their inhalators for the control of respiratory infections.

Doug Gleason reports(12/19/99):
"Hi Sam,
I just wanted to let you know, five people that I know have now successfully used GSE in a nebulizer to rid themselves of lung and bronchial infections. In all five cases, the symptoms disappeared in less than a day. Four of the five were children with chronic infections unaffected by anti-biotics prescribed by their doctor. This method was first tried by a respiratory therapist I know at a local hospital. She was amazed......probably more than most because that's her living.
Here's the formula: 1 drop Nutribiotic in one ounce saline water (for nebulizers). I couldn't tell you if the saline is absolutely necessary, but that's what she gave me."

Also check out  Collidial Silver or Soveriegn Silver for use in Nebulizers
