High Blood Pressure [Hypertension]: Causes & Natural Cures
« on: May 04, 2006, 07:50:04 PM » by still*learning
Hello --
Does anyone have any recommendations for high blood pressure? My husband was diagnosed with this in December. He is a healthy 33 year old that only occassionally suffers from allergies or gets a sinus infection. He had complete blood work done at the doctor and his numbers were all so good that the Dr was jealous.

My opinion since everything else seems to be good is that this is stress relatated. He is a CPA who owns his own firm and works long hours. It has been a stressful year with his business and with our 8-month old son. He was born with a congenital skin condition that occurs in only .03% of all births.

I am just starting to turn to natural health for answers so any direction would be appreciated!

Thank you!

The Water Cure is said to lower blood pressure within a few days. If it is stress related, a vacation or job change might help  Wink. I recently studied the Vanilla Bean which is the seed of an orchid plant. The vanilla bean is said to be a calming, steadying herb, without making you lethargic. If you can get some real vanilla beans and make a few recipes with that, it might help too.

My husband has had high blood pressure for three years and he's 31.  As long as he exercises 4 days a week he's alright.  When he hasn't swam or biked his blood pressure goes back up.  He also used to get sinus headaches from allergies, but are now gone.

I've heard garlic reduces blood pressure.  My Mom would take it when she was sick and her blood pressure would get so low she'd get dizzy.  Unfortunately, I don't know of anything to bring it down permanently.

I have a friend who's a PA at the local hospital and he overcame severely high BP with Garlic alone because he didn't want to be dependant on meds forever and he couldn't give up his rice & beans! I'm not sure of the dose, but garlic is good for so many things it couldn't hurt to look up the dose & try it!  (I know he uses capsules from the store, but I have another friend who eats raw  Tongue cloves.  I guess it's a preference thing.) ~L

My grandfather took garlic daily for YEARS for his blood pressure. It worked for him. He also drank a lot of water, and I think that helped too.

BTW, Beeyoutiful.com is now selling, what we believe may be the best, incapsulated garlic - odorless!

I am currently reading a book called Deadly Emotions by Don Colburt MD. If the high BP is stress related this book my just motivate your hubby to deal with these issues. The doc who wrote the book is a Christian. THe book is well researched and scientifically validated. I found it easily through interlibrary loan.

I have a friend who is having high blood pressure.  Very high! She has been taking cayenne pepper in tomato juice and it went up higher.  She tried garlic in a pill form (from a local department store) but that has not helped. Any ideas?  She is on two meds and really wants to get off.

I really don't put much stock in pill-form garlic.  Allicin is the key component of garlic that heals, & guess what that is?  It's the stuff that makes it stinky!!  hee hee  Soooo, I would have her do what we do, & that is cut up a clove into tiny pieces twice a day -- swallow it like a handful of pills.  She should also make her diet as much about raw fruits & vegetables as possible -- I got this list from a google search for a great diet for her to follow:  potassium-rich foods include avocados, bananas, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, grapefruit, nectarines, oranges, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, green peas, potatoes, and squash. Foods rich in magnesium include nuts, rice, bananas, potatoes, wheat germ, kidney and lima beans, soy, and molasses.

Mine is borderline.  So, I just asked the owner of our local whole foods store this same question.  He said

1)  Fish oil - only the best kind though (arctic caught fish)
2)  cayenne - he said get the "cool" kind.  The "heat" factor will be listed on the package
3)  exercise

I have heard increased water intake does WONDERS.  I have it in a book somewhere, but I think it was something like it helps hydrate/expand the blood vessels so the blood can move more freely, not as much "pressure" from having to move through a more narrow opening.  Make sense?  It's in one of my health books, and the author says that people have gotten off of high blood pressure medicine from just increasing water intake alone.  I think it's Dr. Don Colbert (Toxic Relief/What Would Jesus Eat? guy)

The book "Protein Power" says that high blood pressure can be cured by controlling your carb intake.  I think this falls in line with every other aspect of a healthy body.  Too many carbs and not enough healthy fats and proteins contribute to just about every health problem known to modern Americans.  I used to have high blood pressure, but don't anymore.  Oral contraceptives was one of my contributing factors, but I believe diet was another and I don't personally believe that salt intake has anything to do with it whatsoever.  Everyone I know that "watches" their salt (me included) didn't show any signs of improvement from reducing the amount of salt they consume, but of course, this is just my opinion.

To clarify, I just looked it up and Don Colbert says in his book What You Don't Know May Be Killing You! that increasing intake of water opens up arteries just as I posted earlier, thus preventing a rise in blood pressure BUT only if detected early can this treatment (he recommends 2-3 qts. a day) reduce the pressure to normal.  Otherwise, if the high blood pressure has progressed to kidney damage, they will not filter properly and this increase in water can cause edema, which is swelling.

Just wanted to clarify that - glad I looked it up.  Whew!

Grandma(we call her Mita)  has started the vinegar rinse and is only washing her hair with a bar of soap and not using hairspray. She is now complaining of not really pain but pressure on her head-all over-so bad that she can't sleep. She has had dizzy spells and fatigue. DR can't get her in for 2 weeks-he's on vacation and apparently because of the ins she can't just go see anyone else. OH and she said her blood pressure was very high this morning. Trying to help her with what info she gives me until he comes back. She stopped her meds and i know Omega 3 was said for cholesterol-what for blood pressure? she hardly eats but i know when she does it isn't always nutritious.

After having pre eclampsia with our 6th child, I was diagnosed with chronic hypertension. I was on meds for over a year, and just weaned off of them. I have really researched this topic. About a month ago, I began taking odorless garlic, COQ10, and Fish Oil. I also eliminated caffeine, white flour ans sugar, and began exercising. My blood presure dropped dangerously low , and I called my Dr, she began the wening process and as of today I am med free. During this time, I realized that I was carrying an unnecessary burden of stress, fear and unforgiveness. Through a series of events, I was able to make peace with two relatives, and I gave up a church related activity that was stresful to me. I think that Dr Colbert is right in saying that part of blood pressure issues are stress related, mine has been borderling for years, and always rose above that acceptable 140/90 during times of stress. I have really had to make a concious effort to take every thought captive and not allow myself to wallow in my emotions. I am praying for your Dh, and hope that this helps.

Peace4all, I can only imagine how concerned you must be about your husbands blood pressure.  I have never heard of such a high reading.  I have been researching this very topic lately because I have had an issue with high bp with my last two pregnancies and it is still not normal most days.

I don't have any magic answers except to encourage you to help your husband by doing as much research as possible and just lovingly share it with him as much as he is willing to hear.   Don't give up on the garlic supplement and definitely try to get more garlic into your daily diet.  try to be creative at getting him to enjoy more fruits and veggies and becoming more active is very important.  Maybe evening walks together would be fun and less like exercise.

You could try to replace your usual desert with a smoothie with the fruits that he likes best. Our family favorite that we have everyday is as follows:  mix in your blender:
            2 ripe bananas
1 cup or so of milk
!/2 cup of yogurt or kefir
frozen strawberries ( enough to make the consistency of a  milkshake)

You can add any berries that he may like to this.  Blueberries are also very good.  I hope this helps you and your dh.

His readings were crazy high, but with pre e clampsia mine was about the same as your Dh. A friend of mine's Dh went through this a few weeks ago, they refigured his meds and he cut out caffeine. From what I have read, doing everything you can naturally to get off bp meds is the best thing, side effects etc.

I've read that Hawthorn Berries is very good for regulating blood pressure.  What I need to know, if anyone knows, is can you take the Hawthorn Berries while weaning off of the blood pressure meds.  My husband has a friend at work who has extremely high blood pressure, he is on the strongest meds possible.

I gave him some info that I got from a friend who helped control her husband's bp - hawthorn berries, cayenne, and garlic.  I also gave my Yes You Can! T-Tapp seminar.  But we need to know how he goes about taking the herbs if he is still on the bp meds.

I would highly recommend cod liver oil.  My husband had high blood pressure and the only change we made to his diet was adding CLO.  Within 6 weeks his blood pressure was way down (110/75).  When he started it was running 145/90 consistently.  Even if your hubs blood pressure is higher then that, long term use of CLo will bring it down.

hmmm... I've been a bit cautious about having CLO during pregnancy and that might clinch it - I have extremely LOW blood pressure when I am pregnant so if CLO helps to lower it further it wouldn't be very good for me at all Huh

1/4-1/2 tsp of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water. or if he can stand it, just a little of the water and down it in a hurry!  My husband 38 suffered fro m high blood pressure, becasue of work related stress.  He would have the aching in his neck and all of that.  He tries to avoid dr's becasue he didn't want to be on meds and so I researched the net for some stuff.  ACV seems to do the trick!  WIthin 20-30 minutes, he's back to normal.  The recommended dosage was to take the 1/4-1/2 tsp after each meal to keep it regulated.  He no longer has to take it now. He changed jobs!  Grin

Ok, here goes.  I'm so happy to have all of you to share this finding with!!!  Grin  I will start out by saying that my husband has been on blood pressure meds for at least 7 years.  Well not any more!  Cheesy  We had to change doctors and this new doctor required him to get blood work done just to get a refill on his prescription.  My hubby thought that was ridiculous.  He said there is no way he is going to do that.  He was just going to stop taking the meds.  I could not let him do that, because I know what high blood pressure can do if not under control.  Sorry for such a long intro.  Undecided  So I started to researching like I've never researched in my life.  Here is what I found.

*Garlic - 900mg of garlic per day.  Standardized to contain 1.3% allicin (12,000mcg).   This is VERY important.  Also NO AGED GARLIC.  I have to admit, with all the garlic stuff available out there, it was a little hard to find the one we needed.  We buy ours at Super Supplements, I'm sure the health stores and the regular stores that have a health/organic section have it.  It comes in a rectangle box.  The top 1/2 of the box is white, the bottom 1/2 is green.  It's called "Garlinase Fresh."

*Ubiquinol CoQ10 - 100mg per day.  The best ones are soft-gel capsules containing oil based or soluble form.  In order to further enhance absorption take with food.

This was an amazing finding.  My husband has been using this formula for almost a year.  It works SO GREAT!!!  Cheesy I thank God for allowing me to find this.  My husbands blood pressure is at it's lowest.  Even the meds could not get it that perfect.  Gotta add as a side note.  My husband is a very critical man when it comes to natural stuff.  He was absolutely blown away when he started seeing the results for him self.  Which only took one to two days.  My mom is now using this to control her hight blood pressure as well.  I try to share this with anyone who needs it.  I really hope this helps everyone here.  You can always PM me if you have any specific questions which I might not have addressed.

What herbs should i buy to make my mom a tincture? She has a little bit of high blood pressure and headaches every day. Do you think the headaches could be from the high blood pressure? I was thinking cayanne would be good to use but what else could i add?

Also, I'm about to order the arnica flowers and saint Johns wort so i can make some muscle rub. I have 4 ppl to make it for. How much should i order to make enough for them all?

where are you ordering your herbs from? I've never made a tincture with Cayenne, only because I order my cayenne from bulk herb store and they only sell powdered cayenne. Best remedy for blood pressure (IMO from all of my research) is garlic and cayenne. My dad takes his garlic fresh (chopped and swallows) and garlic powder mixed in water.

depending on how much of the herbal rub you want per person, a pound of each should be plenty. I use 1/8 of a lb to make an 8 oz jar of rub. It last a while in our family.
hope I helped a little at least!

Yes, thank you!! That helped a lot. I will go and order the herbs for the rub now and instead of making a tincture i will just buy her some cayenne and garlic pills to take. That will be much easier for me anyway. Thank you again!! Smiley
