I am liking this idea more and more, but as with everythign, I have questions:

1. HOW can you stand the smell of vinegar on your hair???  Undecided  Is there a substitute??

2. I have had psoriasis/dry scalp nearly all my life. It creates lots of flakes in my scalp and sometimes dry scabs if I do not use Head and Shoulders Dry Scalp Formula weekly. Is there an alternative??

3. My hair is very straight, oily, fine, and easy to break. It has no body and lies straight to my head unless I tease the roots a bit, and even then it soon falls. It holds curl only for a few hours when I sleep in sponge rollers. Its about back bra strap-length. Anyone out there with similar hair that has a "magic formula" of this baking soda stuff that helps fluff your hair w/o greasing it up too badly and takes care of the dry scalp?

4. I have naturally med. ash brown hair, but have it highlighted with honey streaks. Will this formula have a weird reaction and turn my hair green or blue???

5. Because my hair is so fine and "fly-away", when I put it up, the sides soon fall down unless I use some type of hair spray. Any suggestions for this?

I have only noticed the vinegar faintly and my husband doesn't seem to mind it at all Huh Huh Huh I sometimes think he only sees well if i am naked Wink  Honestly, I had a facial the other day (amazing Christmas gift Smiley) and he didn't notice.  But, then again, he doesn't seem to notice all the weight I gained either so I guess it is a good thing.  Anyways, vinegar, okay, I don't rinse mine out totally.  I do a very quick rinse so maybe that would help if I rinsed it better.  Also, I noticed that several ladies were putting essential oils in their hair to help with the smell.  I think that is a good idea if you want to still smell really pretty - and who doesn't?!?  I say give it a shot for a few weeks.  I tend to be dry in tha scalp like you and I have had no problems since I started this.  Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Since I have gone "no poo" for a couple of months now these are my results:

1) My hair is curlier than it has ever been!  I have fine, limp hair and it has totally changed.
2) My scalp condition has improved totally.  I used to have itchy, inflamed, dandruff, and sometimes pimples on my scalp (I think from coloring).  Now all have totally disappeared!
3)My hair does not tangle as easily. (This happened when I changed back to white vinegar rinses)

I now only use the baking soda on my roots, massaging GENTLY.  I let that sit while I do other shower things.  Then I rinse it all out, and take a diluted vinegar solution and rinse, making sure to get it on my scalp.  I do not rinse again.  Once my hair dries it does not smell like vinegar at all (just my towels do  Cheesy )  I do take some essential oil and put it on my hands and run through my hair while still wet---I LOVE to smell like lavender!

IMHO, depending on what is causing your scalp problem, baking soda may cure it.  I think mine was a fungus, so this worked to get rid of it.  Read about fungal/bacterial infections on another thread, and that may help.

My hair is colored, and I have had no wierd color changes, in fact, the color looks brighter and shinier.

For me, it is not labor intensive. I have a bottle of bs and a bottle of vinegar in the shower, and it takes just as long as if I were using 2 bottles of shampoo and conditioner.  I pour a bit of vinegar in a cup (sometimes I use the kids toy pitcher that looks like a whale!--It is always in the tub) and fill from the shower, and pour over my head!  But I may have a rhythym going since I have been doing this for a couple of months.

I will never go back to shampoo, (except for unforseen circumstances, of course) it has taken a bit for me to find what works for me, so just like finding the right shampoo, you may need to play with it and find what works best for you!

So many different hair types, the same way may not work for everyone.

So maideninwaiting, have no fear--GO NO POO ! (That was my cheer Grin )

I did it!  Grin It was an adventure to say the least. Something strange happened when I added my cup of warm water to the T. to bs. It dissolved and turned into a solution rather than a paste. Wink So... I poured it on my head anyway and got more bs. I then added a smaller amount of water and it was more pasty. Then I began the grainy, crunchy process of working it into my wet hair. I tried to massage it into my scalp well and my temples. The "solution" got all over my head so I mistakenly got it on my ends as well. After it set about a minute, I prepared the acv rinse. I DO NOT like COLD water! So I held it as far away as possible.... so far that it hit the backs of my legs and I may have gotten a drop on my hair. Wink I was laughing hysterically. I poured more cold water on. I then got under the shower and did a total rinse of lukewarm water. (Maybe it runined the whole process?) I just cannot stand to leave anythign in my hair. After it was well rinsed, I wrapped it in a towel for about 15 minutes. Then I ran a pick through and was suprised that there were no rats nests as there sometimes are when I use shampoo AND conditioner. Then off to the blow dryer (something I have to do in the winter- my mom has been rigth too many times about catching a cold when you go to bed with a wet head in the winter time!) As I dried it, I noticed it does seem fuller that usual which made me happy. It also appears to be clean and feels smooth. However, as I dried it, running my hands through it, it had a bit of a gritty feeling- like when I put powder in it to absorb oil on the days I don't have time to wash it. Wink Also, the ends seemed extra dry. I suppose this is because I accidentally poured the "solution" all over my head? I used finger tips to lightly "oil" the ends with coconut oil. My hair is so weird- Its oily at the roots, but I have a dry scalp which causes flaky dandruff and sometiems scabs. The ends sometimes tend to be dry- especially tonight   : and its fine, but I have lots of it, but it has no body.
So... there is my "no 'poo" story. Any advice?

Maideninwaiting --
Your hair sounds a lot like mine -- my mom used to say she'd spend forever curling my hair for pictures when I was a kid, but by the time we arrived, it was board straight again!  Anyway, I have noticed such a change when I do the baking soda bit.  I do sometimes go to bed with a wet head, and when I have gone without shampoo, I noticed that I have quite a bit of wave that sticks around all day.  I keep a sippy cup in the shower with the vinegar in it.  I haven't got it all down yet for my hair type, but I gotta say I'm liking it.

I fell of the bandwagon this morning Cry  Roll Eyes
I'd like to see a poll or something to see if the soda and vinegar is working for all hair types. My hair is fine textured, very long, and not normally greasy even if I don't wash for a week.
I expected some extra greasiness as my head "transitioned" but this was awful. My hair continued to get greasier and greasier until I could hardly rinse the soda out last night. After it dried from last night's wash it was just matted down...not tangly...I lost lots of hair each wash and that is not normal for me. I used shampoo this morning and lost no extra hair Huh Oh I've been on this for three weeks... Good thing I normally wear a scarf in public so I could just put the whole mess up in a bun and cover it. Tongue The ends weren't too bad at first, though...

I too have fallen off the band wagon...After doing this my hair wasn't very greasy, in fact I loved it the first time I did it. I did it for a week But it made my hair fall out really bad.  My hair is kind of thin anyway, so this really bothered me.  And it made it feel soooo dry and unhealthy on the ends.  I put some coconut oil on the bottom 2 inches of it and let it set for about an hour, then I went and washed with the BS and ACV rinse.  The oil wouldn't come off!  So later I washed my hair with my shampoo (Garnier Fructise), and it feels a lot better.  I'm really dissapointed, but my husband absolutly loves it.  He said it makes his scalp no longer itch.  At least he likes it!

I have pretty normal hair that occasionally gets a little greasy.  It is very thick.  I have been doing this for a couple of weeks and really like it (except the yucky smell!).  One day, I got in the shower and forgot I didn't have BS so I used my old shampoo and did not like the results.

I just wanted to mention that I found a very easy way to dispense the ACV.  A Peri Bottle, the kind you use after giving birth, works perfectly.

So, I would think the syrup (chocolate or maple-type) bottles would work as well since they have that same 'snap down' top.  The squeemish & the Male types that I know might prefer that....

I have been "poo" and styling product free for months now. As seen in previous posts I have experimented using bar soap and acv rinse, my own detergent free hair cleanser and acv rinse, bs paste and water rinse, and bs paste and acv rinse. For several weeks now I've been doing something a bit different than all of the above and it is by far my favorite!!! So, I thought I'd share for any of you all who are as strangely passionate about this all as I am...

I wash my hair every or every other day with the following process:

I brush my dry hair from the scalp to the ends, focusing on the scalp, using an old fashioned boar bristle brush for long hair. This takes me less than 1 minute.

before getting in the shower I turn the water on to as hot as possible and I put about one tablespoon of baking soda into a squirt bottle (like the dressing squirt bottles at subway - I got mine at walmart for $1) and fill the bottle with about 1/2 cup of hot water.

I then adjust the temp for a normal shower and get in and wet down my hair. I shake up the bs water for about 20 seconds while I'm wetting down my hair, and then I squirt the mixture all over my scalp starting at my bangs and I lift use my fingers to separate the hair in the back so I can get that part of my scalp. Then I very gently scrub my scalp with the pads of my fingers starting at edges of my hairline and working towards the center. This takes me about one minute.

Leaving the bs liquid in my hair, I then wash my body as normal (ivory soap or acv on pits and feet, quick loofa scrub or just water on everything else). This takes me about 2-5 minutes depending on how much I'm wanting to stay in the nice relaxing warm shower.  Smiley

I then turn the water slightly warmer, and I rinse my hair quite thoroughly, gently scrubbing thru all areas of my scalp as previously mentioned. The bs liqid makes the hair slightly slippery (not grainy at all) and I can definitely feel when it is rinsed out of my hair. This takes about 2 minutes.

Once every week or two I'll do the standard acv rinse (especially if my hair is getting too tangly) but I can't do it more than that b/c it makes my hair so silky/shiny it feels clean but looks greasy!!!

When I get out of the shower I dry off and wrap my hair in the towel. I get dressed and then either finger comb or use a wide toothed pick to go thru my hair. I then put it up or let it air dry.

I no longer use any form of styling products. I once in a blue moon use a blowdryer. I occasionally use a curling iron on the ends and bangs. If my hair is staticky I will use a drop or two of conditioner on the ends of my wet hair.

I have found that this is by far the quickest, simplest, most effective way to clean my hair. The dandruff that plagued me for years is completely gone, and my hair does not come out in handfuls like it did when I used the bs paste. I can take a 5 minute shower if necessary, and I have found my hair generally more manageable than it ever was in the poo days.

It took me a while to get to this point, but it was definitely worth it!!! You definitely have to be determined to make it work!!! I wouldn't go back tho!!! Grin

Just wanted to chime in and say that I, too, have been using the baking soda mixed with water. I put about an ounce (maybe less) in one peri bottle and fill it with cool water. In the other peri bottle, I put a good ounce of white vinegar then fill it with cool water. I like to take hot baths, but I never could take one AND wash my hair b/c the shampoo wouldn't rinse out (super thick, long hair). Now, however, I fill my tub as high as I want and just get in w/ my peri bottles. I squirt the bs water all around my hair line and gently scrub, then squirt more further back on my head, doing this till my whole scalp area is saturated. I just massage for a minute, then lay back in the water and massage more and rinse. I can tell when it's rinsed - it's almost "squeaky"! Then I use the vinegar water all over my hair. I rinse it quickly, then wrap my head in a towel and enjoy the rest of my bath! I've been doing this for almost one month, and I've gradually gone from washing every other day to every third day, as my hair just doesn't get as oily. As a matter of fact, I use some form of serum such as "frizz-ease" mixed with jasmine essential oil on the ends after it's dried, as it has no oil anymore. I'm loving this way of shampooing!

BTW, the ACV wreaked havoc on my hair for whatever reason - I couldn't even get a brush through it, literally. I have no idea what the difference is for my hair, but the plain white vinegar does the trick.

Just my experience!

I had my hair cut last night.   Roll Eyes

Somewhat impulsively, but now it's about chin length (lost about 5 inches).  The ends were so damaged from perms 2 years ago, I was wondering if my no 'poo regiment was being affected by it....so, GOOD-BYE!

I think I can't use the ACV so often...feels thick and almost greasy in texture and appearance, but it's clean, I know!   Undecided  I had it diluted in a sprayer and the BS in a peri-bottle (which sometimes gets clogged  Angry).

I like the Lemonade for hair from www.makeyourowncosmetics.com...chamomile, lemon juice and water.  I think that helped lighten things.   Smiley

I have tried bar soap...jury's still out to lunch on that one.   Wink

I love it!  Simple and much less time consuming and messy than the paste version.
Now dh is doing it too!  I am in shock  Grin, he loves it!
Dh doesn't appreciate the vinegar smell so doing ACV rinse less often is definetly a plus!
We have nice soft water here so this deal works great for us.  My experience, while traveling was very interesting, it seems water makes a big difference in how well this works. A poll would be interesting.  Smiley

Water definitely makes a difference here, it seems.  We have well water, and I can't wash that way more than twice in a row before my hair starts looking "unclean".  The first time I wash with Baking Soda and ACV it looks great.  The 2nd time, it doesn't look as good after I wash, but it's OK.  The 3rd time in a row, it loses its shine and doesn't feel clean.  I've tried varying how often I wash, tried it for a couple of weeks in a row, with or without the ACV, but so far I haven't been able to do it longterm.  I'm waiting on my shampoo bars from Chagrin Valley, and hoping to maybe alternate with that!  Until then, I have to stick with Head & Shoulders, alternating with baking soda.

I've been doing the baking soda/vinegar for about a week now.  It was great at first, but tonight I noticed I have flakes.  Undecided  I did the bs/vinegar on Tuesday, nothing Wednesday, and then nothing today.  Do you think the flakes are from going too many days in between washings?  Before when I washed with shampoo/conditioner I had to wash it every day b/c my hair was so greasy by the next day.  But now it doesn't seem to get greasy so I thought it would be okay to go a couple days.  So, what's up with the flakiness and itchiness?  Huh Huh

I have a feeling from reading this thread over time and my own experimenting that because each person's hair is so different that people will have to adjust to what works for them.  After several months of using the BS and V I finally found a routine that works for my girls and I.  I use the baking soda paste and for my daughter I HAVE to use about a tsp. of dandruff shampoo also.  I put the paste on and massage it a little then add the tsp. of shampoo and lather it a little bit.  It won't lather much but it does the trick.  I rinse and then do the vinegar rinse.  If I do this, she can go 4 or 5 days without greasy looking hair.  If I don't, she's a grease head the next morning.  For myself, I use the same method but I use a tsp. of Jason's natural lavendar shampoo.  Works great.  I don't mind buying the more expensive shampoo because it lasts forever this way.  If I was using it normally I'd have to use 1  or 2 tbls of shampoo for a normal wash because my hair is thick (so is my daugther's).

So if you have trouble with your hair greasing out try a tsp. of natural shampoo (or dandruff if you have too - I know it's not natural but until they come up with one) and see if that works for you.

Patti,

I agree with experimenting with your own hair as a guide.  My 16 year old dd, who has the biggest 'greasy hair' problem in the family, gets along just fine with the bs and v twice a week and she has been using a tsp. of a natural shampoo about every two or three weeks.  The 13 yr. old dd just doesn't get good results in her thick and oily hair unless she adds a tiny bit of liquid castile soap to the bs paste.  That does the trick for her!  I have started adding a touch of liquid soap to my own bs wash every now and then, too, as my hair seems to feel a little oily.  The men in our house, dh and 10 yr. old ds, are happy with using just the bs and vinegar.  Their scalps are not itchy and flaky like usually are in the winter.  My darling is still looking for new growth - hoping!  Wink
We all have dark/strawberry blonde hair and have noticed that the color has lightened and evened out using the no'poo.  I love the texture, color, shine, and manageability of my hair!

That makes sense to just mess with the formula until it works.  Smiley  Maybe washing every other day with the bs/vinegar would help?  Shampoo makes my hair very greasy by the next day, but the bs makes my scalp itchy and flaky by day two or three.  Hmmm, maybe it's just the adjustment period?  Huh  I did really like the texture, shine, and overall feel of my hair with the bs/vinegar.  I also thought about using kombucha for a rinse every other time instead of vinegar b/c I keep reading it's a great hair rinse.  I'll let you know!  Wink

Thought I would chime in with my/our no-poo experience...

The 3 girls & I are no poo for about 3 weeks or so.  I made up this from joychild24seven:

I then tried something that I had considered when reading the detergent free thread. I wondered if we could make homemade laundry detergent with ivory soap, if maybe I could make homemade shampoo the same way. So, I grated a bar of Ivory soap and dissolved it with 4 cups distilled water, 2 tsp olive oil, and 1 tbsp baking soda in a saucepan over low heat. I poured this mixture into glass jars and stirred in several drops of orange essential oil for fragrance. That night I washed my hair with my new "detergent free" shampoo, rinsing with 3 cups of water/1 tbsp acv mix and then clean water again, and my hair felt as silky and clean as it did back in the "poo" days.

Now, just to be clear, she states in a later post that she does things differently now - but I mixed this up & we're satisfied so far.  I use reg white vinegar instead.

My oldest girl has thicker-than mine, past-her-rump length hair.  She has always had problem with lots of tangles.  It's much better now & seems cleaner longer.

The other girls & myself have fewer tangle problems than she does usually.  We all have nicer feeling hair after this wash & vinegar rinse.

Only thing I plan to change is to increase the water a bit more.  It's a bit lumpy when cooled.  It's essentially washing head to toe in ivory - but it's been ok for us so far as long as we rinse well.

What I have to do to help rid the tangles from my girls' hair is use a wide-toothed comb or a pick while their hair is coated with the conditioner.  It's much easier (and much quieter!) this way.  I do this too, with my curly hair.  I've been "no poo" since end of October.  I mostly use conditioner (as recommended in Curly Girl), and don't rinse with the vinegar (because it's drying).  I bought a rosemary & mint shampoo bar for dh, and he seems to like it.  I tried bs once or twice, but my hair seemed dirty, so I quit that.  I'm still using shampoo on my girls, but just enough to clean their scalp; then the suds go through their hair when I rinse.  I do the vinegar rinse on the ends of their hair.  Seems to work fine on theirs.
Re-reading this, my post seems very jumbled.  Guess I need to get ready for bed!

Thought I'd check in w/ our no 'poo experiences.  I think I need to reread the original article.   Roll Eyes

I have found that my glycerin/natural bar soap works best.  Just whatever the co-op has.  The BS, even in a squirt bottle, leaves too many flakes that I can't bother to brush out.  BUT, it works on my children (w/ their towheads!).   Wink  My DD's hair is lovely and I wash it 2x a week, w/ either the soap or BS...Vinegar (ACV, diluted) seems to help w/ the tangly ends.  I use the vinegar sparingly...seems to leave a heavy residue when combined w/ BS.

Still saving $$ on shampoo and encouraged to know that our scalps aren't absorbing a bunch of chemicals that do who knows what to our bodies.  THAT, I think, is the best reason to go NO 'POO!   Grin Grin

Is there anything else a person can use as a hair rinse after bar soap besides acv? I just can't stand coming out of the shower smelling like vinegar!  It does seem to work though. Anyone know of anything that works with similar results? Or an essential oil that really covers up the acv smell?

So is the baking soda used for washing instead of shampoo or soap? My daughter has eczema and her skin has been really dry and rashy lately. And her scalp has always been dry and flaky. My husband wants me to quit using the equate cream from walmart (an off brand of eucerin), because of the bad things in it. So I've been using coconut oil instead. It doesn't soften her skin at all, it still feels like sandpaper. Last night I put some Nature's Gate unscented lotion on after the coconut oil, thinking that both of them together might help. But I think it burned her skin, she was crying and rubbing her face and back. It felt better after I rubbed her back for a few minutes, but I don't want to do that to her again. And this morning her skin was just as dry. I don't giver her baths very often, maybe twice a week. Whenever I do, her skin gets worse the instant I put her in water. I think it may be because of the chlorine in our water, we are planning on getting a filter soon so maybe that will help. So anyway, back to the question, should I just maybe rinse her with acv and leave it at that, maybe washing her hair with baking soda? But won't the baking soda react with the vinegar when she's in the tub? I use baking soda and vinegar for my drains, doesn't seem like it would be too great for skin.
