Ack. This is a difficult decision! I have been reading over the posts on the herbalist courses from Shonda Parker & from Vintage Remedies. I'd like to see the differences in them. Is the VR Family Herbalist basically the same as Naturally Healthy's Certified Herbalist? Those are the 2 with similiar prices.

A friend of mine mentioned that she would like to be certified in case the FDA tried to start regulating herbs or herbal preparations. Anyone have any input about this? I haven't looked into it at all.

Since there are no regulations or standards for certifications in herbal medicine, I don't think it would make any difference to the FDA or any other government agency.  It is just a way to show that you have studied under "so and so".  So it is probably more beneficial to study under someone who is more well known and respected if you hope to use your knowledge in a professional way.

This is just my opinion of course!

I was wondering if you had to basically go through the course to become a professional to have any privileges in a case like that. Like to prescribe medicine, you have to have the title of doctor, not just nurse or physician's assistant. I am just hoping that we won't have that problem, and that I can grow my own herbs.

So, now I am thinking of either just doing the family herbalist course through NH, or getting ahold of some good books & how-to videos and study as much as I can that way. I have the How-to Herb Book, ABC Herbal, Practical Herbalism, Mommy Diagnostics, and maybe another. I still want more! I feel like I just can't have enough good herb books!

I understand what you are saying. For right now it doesn't matter what 'title' you have. In AR, unless you are a medical doctor you are nothing. The state sees certification as nothing- regardless of herbalist, naturopath, etc.
The Vintage Remedies has more than just herbs. It helps you to learn how each body system works, how to keep your 'terrain' healthy, pros and cons on vaccinations, things that can make you possibly 'overdose' on herbs even if given a normal dose, plus much more. So, not only are you learning about the herbs themselves, you are learning about treating the body as a whole, each system.
I highly recommend it!

You do also learn anatomy with the SNH classes. Specific course on just anatomy too. With working with herbs and all it's essential, otherwise I don't know how much I'd understand them, lol  Smiley
I hope you can make the right choice for your situation! I know it can be hard. The reason I picked this school is that fact that I've known two great moms who are Master Herbalists from this school, and that it is a well-known place and it's been around for one of the longest times.
They can also answer any questions I might have... Cheesy

Anyone familiar with this school? I want to take Shonda Parkers Community herbal course but thought this one looked pretty good if you want an actual degree. I spoke with them on the phone and they are working on getting nationally accredited.

Received an e-mail about this today.  The course is discounted until Dec. 10.

Yeah, I'm looking into that one now. It's a much easier step to take, cost-wise & load. Plus, it can be counted toward the Family Herbalist course & cost! DH is much happier with this option.

If you are not looking for some type of certification and are very busy I highly recommend herbmentor.com They do an herb of the month, have a monthly call in chat about the herb of the month, many recipes, videos, articles, links, herbalpedia, etc. You pay a monthly fee to use all of their content and use it at your own pace. It is a great self teaching tool and you can learn what you need when you need it, one herb at a time. It is my "course" of choice at the moment.

I have been looking at correspondence courses for later when I can afford it but haven't picked one yet. I can't actually physically go to a school seeing as I have little ones so online learning is my best friend right now!

I am slowly going to be adding teaching tools to my own website but that is quite an undertaking when I am so busy! It should be fun.

Oh, and you could start with there free e-courses at herbmentor.com, they also own learningherbs.com, and they have a kids and herbs course that is a separate deal from herbmentor.com.

Has anyone used Dr. Christopher's course?  I am wondering about some of his books.   In particular "Herbal Reference Guide" and "100 Herb Syllabus".
Are they very informative.........could anyone give a brief overview if you have either of these books.  Thanks.
