  Herbal Education & Training Courses [Classes]
« on: January 16, 2007, 03:10:58 PM » by Sonja
I was at the Naturally Healthy (Shonda Parker?) website and saw the herbal course they offer.  Has anyone taken this course or any others that you could give a review of?

Also, tips or ways that you have gained your knowledge in herbs, aromatherapy, etc.  I am especially interested in learning to create my own recipes for health/beauty products.  Do you just do this by trial and error or are there great books that have taught you this art?

When I go to the beeyoutiful website, I'm amazed at all the things they offer and I think, "how did they come up with that?"   I don't have a college education and really don't fancy myself as being that "smart", but I really enjoy this area.  I have most supplies I would need to start making some products.  I've tried some recipes out of books, but haven't liked them.  Well, I'll stop rambling and let others give their precious input!  Thanks!  Smiley

Look at this thread.  Most of my experience has been trial and error.  I am planning to do Shonda's course in the next couple of years.

I have made my own healing salve, lip balm, and lotions.

Although I do reference to recipes, 90% of the ingredients are my own creation.  I think that they have turned out fairly well and I have friends and family now telling me that I should start my own business.  Starting a business requires time and space, which I have neither right now.  Maybe when my dd's are moved out I will think about it, but right now I do this for the pure enjoyment and to better our health with natural stuff.  I also do not have a college degree nor do I have a diploma.  But I always like to read, experiment and learn.

And the best part, my dd's are learning along with me.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for the link to the other thread about Shonda Parker's herbal class.  I should have searched for that before posting.  Sorry about that.  Great info and reviews on that class!

I started because I had a sick baby that Drs had no answers for & had to find out what was going on. I've continued studying because I found that I have a passion for it & I have seen herbs heal things that the Drs had said were untreatable. I learn from books, discution with people, lectures, & now WTM. As far as knowing what to use, it's a lot like cooking; you learn about individual ingredients- what it is, how to cook it, what it tastes like, etc. As you learn more about the food you get to the point where you know what will work together & how to cook it & you don't need a recipe. Herbs & aromatherapy are the same way, you learn what herb does what & different preparation methods & learn how to combine them.

As far as good books, there are good books recommended all over WTM. HTH Blessings ~herbalmom

I've been able to learn how to make some of our tinctures, salves, etc. from books as well as from talking to others who use herbal medicine.  There is a lot of information about the properties of herbs FREE at the library and on the Internet.
 We have learned a lot by trial and error in some of our cosmetic and cleaning products, but we stick to tried and true recipes from experienced herbalists in our medicines, as I have no formal training or degree.  One thing that I feel is important is buying extremely good quality ingredients and maintaining as clean a work area as possible.  IMHO this is an important issue, as we are using the tinctures for medicine for ourselves as well as a small clientele.

I was looking at the Shanda Parker course content and have a question for those of you who have been using the course.  How much does she include on Soy?  I noticed several recipes with "Tofu" listed in their names.   I always assumed that tofu is soy.   We try to limit our use of soy (except for the fact that it is in everything) so I was wondering what her position is on soy.

I thought after getting into this lifestyle, I would love to be able to go to med school - not to become a doctor, but to learn all sides and have the medical expertise to sort through all of my newly acquired health knowledge...but I don't have zillions of dollars and 12 years for a "hobby".  *snicker*

Anyway, I was chatting about this with a lab tech at the hospital the other day and he said you can become a physicians assistant and learn almost as much and spend about 1/3 the time in school.  I was intrigued.  Anyone else have more info?  Any of you have this type of degree? or maybe a better suggestion?

My sister is an RN and she suggested looking into programs offered through the hospital. So I did, and found that our local hospital offers a three week program as a certified Nurse's assistant first, but you are hired as an employee, so you get paid, well, here they said they would pay me 7.65 an hour while going through the program and then if I passed the state board exam I would make more and would be able to work as a nurse's tech. Then you are eligible to proceed through other medical programs they offer. I think it may vary from hospital to hospital what they actually offer in terms of programs. Just thought maybe this would help, since they actually pay you to go through the programs. I too, was interested in really learning the medical aspects to further understand using the right herbs for your body ect.

My sister who is an excellent nurse in all areas actually calls me sometimes for natural remedies!  Cheesy Maybe she should school me and vise versus!

This is back to the herbal courses topic but there is a course by Paul Berger that is correspondence.  He has a good reputation.  I don't think he or his courses are Christian based but from what I understand, I don't think there is anything contradictory either.  I talked with him on the phone a while back.  He said that in his course you study 14 basic herbs.  He sends them to you and you study them.  There are also 2 CD rom lectures and a 100 page workbook.  I think that I might take this some time when life slows down a bit (ha-ha).
You can find his info on the internet.  His phone # is (303) 541-9552.

Hi,
Thought I would let you know about a couple of courses I have found in my searches.
This one is through Stratford Career Institute.

This one is an online course and appears to be connected with Nature's Sunshine products.

Funny you mentioned this, HB. This is the EXACT reason I went back to school and became an LPN. I thought, hey, with a nursing degree, I'll have the background of the medical community, and it'll be a breeze!

Well, I should have thought again. Although I got a straight 4.0 all the way through school, it was very tough for me. Lots of things are completely contradictory to what I believe to be true, which made it difficult to complete the courses. Like handing out up to 25 medications per patient in the nursing homes, recommending 'heart healthy' diets to my heart patients, giving stool softeners and fleet enemas to those who don't have BM's at least every 3rd day.....the list goes on and on. My heart just broke for these people, especially in the nursing homes. They have no control over their diets, just eat what is served to them. They are lonely and cry a lot. Medications are used to subdue them and control their emotions. It's an awful state to be in. This was just my experience, however, and I am not saying that all nursing homes are like this.

Memorizing all the classes of drugs and what they do was no picnic, either. I was very turned off by the whole class, even when I tried to tell myself that I 'should' learn this so that I can counteract it by learning herbs that would do the same thing.

Anyway, it was a hard pill to swallow, but I'm not sorry I did it. INstead, it has fueled the fire for me to go and get my ND.....when God directs.

Just MHO,

I have the Shonda Parker course.  Its VERY thorough.  Probably even more thorough than I need at this point.  I decided I'm just going to work through The ABC Herbal book, and actually MAKE the tinctures I'm interested in.  I am one that will learn and learn, and never actually apply anything!  For me, I think this will be what I need.  Just pick up a practical how to book,and do it.  Otherwise, I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned the site www.learningherbs.com. They have a ton of free information, even a free course to take.  They have a cool board game can order too to learn as you play.  There's so much info out there.  I think the main thing is to just dive in and do it!

I am a pediatric nurse at one of the top-ranked hospitals in the world - and I get mixed responses from the medical profession.  I have some that think I'm crazy b/c  I don't take my kids to the doc at the drop of a hat and put them on antibiotics, but a lot of the nurses don't scoff at me b/c they've tried a lot of herbal stuff too.  I work on a unit that specializes in immune deficient children and cancer diagnoses.  Many of our teens-adult age cancer patients use some kind of holistic/naturopathic adjuncts to their chemo regimen.  Increased white blood cell counts, more energy, less pain, these are all things that they've reported to me.
  I'm looking at a holistic nursing degree...I'd like to have the education to feel confident enough to do consults.
  Keep in mind, that the modern medical profession calls these doctors, "practicing physicians."  Okay...so I don't want them "practicing" on me or my kids....I would much rather turn to the methods that have been tried and found true since the fall of mankind. Thank you very much! Wink

[Mamacat -- I think a holistic nursing degree would be cool. I graduated LPN school back in 1996. Even then I was wanting to also learn more about natural healing.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think to know both about the body and the medical illness and also about natural healing would be a great way to 'know it all'.

I have saw many ppl who are into natural healing do very stupid stuff because they dont know how the body works and how certain illness affect each person, so IMO if we just educate ourselves a little bit then we wont be as likely to be making as many stupid mistakes. I dont mean that everyone should go to medical school but I just mean that its good to get some idea of how the body works.

I think learning about anatomy and physiology is a good way to educate ourselves on how our organs work and why they do what they do.

I probably should not have said that because now watch me make a stupid natural healing mistake and end up eating my won words!   Cheesy    /color]

I've been taking classes through Clayton College for about nine years now, beginning when I had my first baby and wanted information on how to feed her.  I also suffered from pre-eclampsia while pregnant, and was very motivated to learn all I could regarding nutrition and foods, for future prevention's sake.  The college itself has a new age slant but the books and projects have been educational and worthwhile.  I've only had a couple of books that I've marked up very well with crossouts and Scripture verses along the margins! I am not afraid to voice my displeasure when I see obvious bias (for example, when the "pediatric nutrition" class only offered vegetarian books!), and haven't been dinged for it or anything.  So far I have earned a BS and am two classes and a thesis away from an MS.   I prepaid this all off years and years ago, so it sort of feels like it's for "free" at this point.  When I finish my MS, I will automatically receive a box full of books to embark on the PhD portion.  I don't know if it has changed since I began, but there are no deadlines whatsoever, so I have just plodded through the classes as I had time and inclination, and had four additional children inbetween it all.  Most of the books have been very good resources to keep.  I don't have any plans to "use" what I've learned and am learning beyond the needs of my family and friends, but my husband thinks I could be a consultant for some of his chiropractic patients at some point.

I'd love to take the herb certification classes, and still might do that at some point.  If you are self-motivated, the previous posters were all right in encouraging a use of the library, and the internet now as well.  There is SO much information out there, and so easy to find it all for free, there is no limit to what you can learn and do.  And, if you're homeschooling, you can be learning it all with your children (and, in essence, training your future grandchildren) to seek after and enjoy natural, good health.

I love the www.learningherbs.com site! I signed up for their email newsletter they call Herbal Branches. They each have a ton of info on one herb and it's uses. I just ordered their herbal medicine making kit which has a bunch (see below) of medicines to make-tinctures, salves, balms.etc. It comes with all of the ingredients except olive oil and alcohol. Heres what the site says about it-"The Herbal Medicine Making Kit includes everything you need to make your own herbal tinctures and salves so you can learn how to create your own herbal remedies. It is the first step to taking your every day health care into your own hands.
What you will make…

I. Echinacea Tincture.
(4 bottles)
The kit includes:
    * Dried Echinacea root
    * 4 colbolt blue dropper bottles
    * Labels for your finished tinctures
    * A labeled jar to make your tincture in
    * Cheesecloth to strain your tincture when completed

A tincture is an extract of an herb in an alcohol base. Echinacea is an EXCELLENT immune system stimulant for when you feel a cold coming on and an excellent anti-bacterial for first aid situations.

II. Herbal healing salve. (4 tins & 2 jars)

The kit ALSO includes:

    * Salve herbs (a mix of comfrey, calendula, St. John’s wort, and plantain)
    * 4 metal salve tins
    * 2 salve jars
    * Lavender essential oil
    * Beeswax
    * Labels for your finished tins and jars
    * Cheesecloth to strain your salve when completed

This salve is excellent for cuts, scrapes, bumps, bruises, itches, inflammations, diaper rash, chapped lips and more. It’s my FAVORITE recipe and it works great. Our family uses it on everything!
"
It also comes with an herbal home study course called Roots and Branches. Here's what the site says about it-"I wrote the Roots and Branches Herbal Home Study course to be a simple introduction to herbal medicine. It's like taking several herb classes.

It’s enough to learn some essential basic herbal skills and know where to learn more should you choose to do so. For someone looking to empower themselves to take care of their family or their own health, it might be all they need. For the aspiring herbalist, it is an excellent beginning to a longer journey.

"Roots and Branches is colorful and inspiring. You learn a lot without having to put in a lot of time."

The “Roots” of the course give you the foundation you need as a budding herbalist or home medicine maker.

The “Branches” are regular FREE email updates with recipes, remedies and skills so the education and inspiration never ends. You get to be an on-going part of our unique learning community.

Here’s what you’ll learn in Roots and Branches:

    * How to approach herbal medicine so it doesn’t feel overwhelming and impossible to learn.
    * What the best books are to start with, and how to use them.
    * What herbal nourishment is and how to bring it into your life.
    * How to make herbal teas and herbal infusions.
    * How to stay healthy using nourishing herbs.
    * Do herbal pill supplements really work?
    * The three healing traditions.
    * How to put together a natural travel first aid kit.
    * All about the herbs, essential oils, homeopathics and flower essences included in the first aid kit.
    * How to learn about plants by journaling along with several other methods.
    * What are the most poisonous plants and how to learn which ones grow near you.
    * Your journaling will introduce you to THE BIG SIX herbs to know.
    * All about wildcrafting using one of the best herbal wildcrafting books available.
    * How to wildcraft by actually harvesting a plant in the wild.
    * How to harvest herbs in an ethical and sustainable manner.
    * My personal secret as to where to harvest the safest herbs.
    * How to cook with wild plants.
    * How to find out what herbal schools are in your area.
    * An introduction to community herbalism.
    * How to find your herbal passion and your place in herbal medicine.
    * The best books for wild foods recipes.
    * Safe places to order herbs and supplies.
    * Links to great on-line herbal resources, books, and schools.
    * About the benefits of herbal vinegars and how to make one.
"
I bought the two books that go with it but I don't think they are from a Christian perspective. The herbal medicine making kit w/o the books is only $54.99+s&h. With the books I pd $$86.99+9.95 s&h=$96.94. I'm really looking forward to learning a lot. One of the free gifts for purchasing is an herbal growing chart. Dh and I want to plant a garden this year and this chart will help us know what herbs to plant as well as where and how to care for them. I especially like the fact that they show you what the herbs look like so if you have any already growing in your yard (i.e. weeds) you can harvest them before chopping them down with the lawnmower. Nothing beats getting herbs for free!

I have been interested in studying more about herbs for sometime now and thought if I were to take a course, it would be Dr. Christopher's course. You can find info at: http://schoolofnaturalhealing.com/snh_cc.htm In all my herbal reading, I have found Dr. Christopher's formulas to be very recommended and when he was alive, he did amazing things with herbs and healing people. They have varying degrees of courses based on what amount of time and money you want to invest. I don't know that they wouldn't have anything new age, but I would imagine the information would be excellent.

I'm new to this forum and I hope I'm doing this correctly   Roll Eyes. Anyway, I've been receiving your family's newsletter for a few years now and I've become familiar with your "herbal" knowledge (for lack of a better term.) I am wanting to be an herbal mama to my family and I've been looking at a couple correspondence courses on line. I'm wondering if you've taken any courses and could give your recommendation on any particular or if all your knowledge is from your own history and personal study. My husband is fully supportive and wanting to know when I will start my studies, but I haven't figured out the wisest place to spend the money for the best instruction. Please help, if you can. I really appreciate it.
