It's been a while, but one of the things I used to do was to put a little bit of borax into the diaper pail with some water (maybe 1/8 cup or less Huh to 1 gallon? ) and a TIGHT FITTING lid closed firmly.
This is what I put the used diapers into all day before washing.
The borax killed any yeast and kept the cloth free of irritants.
When it came time to wash, I used the HOT setting, dumped the contents of the bucket (water & all), added a small amount of homemade laundry soap with a Downey ball filled with vinegar for the rinse cycle (too much activity at my house for me to catch the rinse cycle  Roll Eyes).
No residue left in the cloth. Very CLEAN diapers. Gentle enough for a baby.  Smiley

I wanted to put this on here because I love to make diapers!  I sell them at www.lotionsandnotions.com  They are my favorite thing to make!  They are on page 2 with several choices with more to come.  They are made out of flannel and are fitted.  I did not make them with closures because not every child is shaped the same and if they have a little booty they made need to fold it down some and it would hurt to have something like that against there skin.  So pins are needed.  I can also do costume if you have an extra tiny or extra large baby.  All I would need is some measurements.  I also sell flannel wipes with zigzag edges with a free wipes solutions recipe. (not on the site yet, but will be by tonight)

Anyone use Country Save detergent for cloth diapers?  I am currently using Charlie's Soap and love it for our clothes, but it's giving my dd a horrible rash.  I try rinsing the diapers many times to get all the detergent out, but she still seems to get it.  I've tried other detergents from the store, but they cause repelling issues and leaks.  I'm desperate!  I've read Country Save is very good, but I'll have to order it online and pay a lot of shipping.  I'll just use it on the diapers so it should last a long time though.  I just need to know if it's as good as it sounds so I don't waste my money.  Thanks!

Just wondering if you tried the Country Save detergent?   Seems like I may have the same problem with our daughter.

Update:  Okay, Charlies soap is apparently   causing my baby's diaper rash.   I used another kind of detergent yesterday to wash new diapers.  I then wore these new diapers on baby yesterday and her diaper rash  greatly improved,  to the point of being almost healed.   Now today I'm using the old diapers that were washed many times with Charlies soap and now washed once with the new detergent.   I'm now using these older diapers again today and baby's got her rash back!   Huh  I know Charlies is some or all of the problem, as my 3 yr. old ds. has been having a constant rash problem on his leg for over a year.  (his "unit" hangs towards that leg.)  Tongue   Grin   He often will wet his undies a little and thus the rash on his leg.  I went on the diaper pin forum and read that other Mom's were having problems with Charlies soap.  The one Mother mentioned  that her son would get a rash when ever he would wet his undies a little.  So I washed ds. clothes with the new detergent and his rash is clearing up!   Shocked   Poor fellow suffered for over a year with that rash and I even tried a couple of different salves and nothing was helping.  I never even thought about  my laundry soap being the problem!   Tongue

So I know its not just buildup in my old diapers.  I guess I'll just need to wash them again and rinse them many times.  We do lots of laundry around here and I need something cheap!  Cheesy  That cleans well and doesn't cause diaper rash!  Smiley   Don't tell me to make homemade laundry soap, I tried that and it didn't work in our hard water.  Grin
I'm now thinking about using washing soda and simple green. I'd also   liked to know where I can get the simple green?

Sunshine4th, Do you use washing soda and simple green for all your laundry?
Thanks!

If you are having a problem finding a detergent that is safe for your baby, you can use borax and washing soda instead. I have done this many times- for a long stretch,too- and it worked great. I dont know if is actually cheaper b/c I used 1/2 cup of it,  then did a vinegar rinse.

Thanks!  My husband picked up some washing soda  at our local Giant store this evening..  Unfortunately they did not have the simple green.   I do have the borax and washing soda on hand, I guess I could try that and see how it  works for us.   I actually tried some natural disposables, and they even gave her a rash!   Huh   I ordered some gDiapers this evening  hoping I can use them until I figure out my laundry soap problem.  I then plan on using the g pants with my prefolds.

You may want to wash the diapers 2-3 times with the borax/washing soday to make sure all the other detergent residue is out.

I have a question. My little boy just turned two and is fine to wear training pants during the day but is there a cloth pull up that I could find for night time. I don't want to use diapers on him since he's a "big kid" now. I use Bum Genius Diapers for my 9 week old....basically I'm just tired of buying disposables and would like a cloth pull up for my son.

Sorry, I didn't see this. I only use the washing soda and simple green for the diapers. I buy simple green at Family Dollar because that is the best price I've found.

OK HELP again!  We are one week into cloth diapering.  My dd doesn't poo much.  As a matter of fact, in one week, she finally pooed again for the second time today.  WHAT A MESS!  What do  you all do to survive this mess?  Is it just my child? She saves it all up and then in one grunt it all comes out within a split second and OOZES EVERYWHERE!!!!  I'm sorry for the play by play  Embarrassed, but how can I contain such a mess in  prefolds?  It just won't stay in the diaper.  When I used disposibles, she was a danger in this area too, until I moved up to size 3s and then it seemed contained well enough.  But how do I prevent this in cloth?  Even if I used plastic pants to contain the pouring out onto clothes, I still would have had to dunk the child because she becomes absolutely covered with it inside the diaper.  Which means, we would never be able to go out in public again  Undecided.  Sigh.  HELP!

No, I wouldn't say she is constipated.  And after I posted I realized it was the third poo because one of them she deposited on the changing table in between diapers  Lips Sealed  And she is never fussy over it.  She just does one unwarned little redfaced grunt and its all over... literally.  Grin LOL

I went and got a G-diaper yesterday because some of you said that you really liked the g diaper and even used prefolds with them.  I think they would really work for the front and back containment but I don't think the prefold lies low enough on the bottom leg opening to contain the mess.  What are your experiences?

Thanks.  I watched that.
So, would you say, even with the prefolds, you haven't had any leakage out the leg?  I like how the top in both the back and front have a little 'lip' to 'catch' things.  But because of the thickness of the prefold, the legs do not have that.  I wanted to see what you think before I use them and then can't return them.

I haven't had a problem with leaking. I have had a tiny bit of poo (breastfed baby runny poo) get on the liner but I've had no blowouts or even any poo on the cover or clothes. Some folks have had blowouts and major leaking but it seems that most have not. I don't know if it's a difference in the way the babies poop, or the way the diapers are being put on, or Huh

But here's the thread where it is discussed http://www.welltellme.com/discuss/index.php/topic,4003.0.html

As far as using them and not liking them, it is easy to resell them. Used gDiapers can be sold on Ebay (because they are considered a diaper cover)and they do sell well. And some of the gDiaper users on WTM may be interested.

Does anyone use thirsties?Huh  I am thinking of switching to cloth diapers.  I have wanted to for some time but have not been able to until now.  I have an opportunity to buy a whole supply of thirsties (9 diapers and 2-3covers) for a fraction of the price.  Has anyone used these?  Did you like them?  why or why not?  I have 24hrs to decide, so any thoughts would be appreciated!

I had never heard of Thirsties, but since I'm always interested in new kinds of cloth diapers I looked them up.  They look really nice!  There are several reviews on the diaperpin website (hopefully the link worked).  I didn't read through them, but thought you might be interested...

stains- please help!

ok, I have beenn doing this for 48hrs now on two kiddos.

the toddler wears training pants during the day, cloth diaper at naps, and one at night w/cpf inside as well.  so far, only one small leak and that was my fault- fixed Smiley

baby- cloth diapers all the time- either fitted w/ cover or cpf w/cover.  he has decided to catch up on some pooping and test this all out for me very well!    Roll Eyes  5x/24 hrs after not going for two days (side note he is usually pretty regular but currently is teething and has a cold) he has a bad rash (cornstarch is our friend)  ?from the cloth or the cold or teething or all??  BUT no leaks!!!   Grin  disposables always blew with this little man, many an outfit ruined too. Sad

the problem I am  having is getting the stains out of the diapers.  so far i have only been washing in borax.  dry pail then cold prewash, hot wash, extra rinse.  they have not been in the dryer yet (it has been raining for days or I'd hang them out to dry when I get that far)

I have Tide in the house, but did not think that was good for the dipes.  other things i have: woolite, baking soda, white vinegar, Tide, borax, bleach,     what will work w/o ruining my diapers??  oh, we have very hard water too. very hard.

Thanks for any words of wisdom ladies!

When possible, hanging them outside in the sun really helps with stains. Do not use bleach, as it will ruin your covers. You could try just soaking them in the washer for awhile with baking soda and/or Borax.

I'd have to say the sun, too. I remember hanging my stained diapers out one sunny day, and a couple hours later, they were white again! In the winter, I'd put a wooden drying rack out in the sun near the house so I wouldn't have to trudge through the snow out to the clothes line, leaving the new baby and 16 month old in the house. That worked great.

the problem I am  having is getting the stains out of the diapers.

It should work on cloudy days too, but if it's raining try a 50/50 mix of lemon juice and hydrogen peroxide in the bleach cup of your washing machine.  This will not hurt your diapers.

Hello Ladies
I have a question
Have any of you successfully made your own baby diapers.  I have decided to go cloth this time around.  I am due the end of March.  I have been looking at cloth diapers on ebay etc. I really like the ones where they have the waterproof covvering on the outside.
I am hoping I can get some feedback from some of you who have made your own, any kind any style.
Also would any of you be so kind as to share any patterns you have.  I found a place online to buy a pattern but they are like $12.00 and I really didn't have that to spend on a pattern.  I really think if I could make them myself it would savve a lot.
If you have anything to share I would SO MUCH APPRECIATE IT.
God Bless,
Angie

Yes, I made quite a few, and used them...  plus ones I bought. If I can find the free pattern I used on line, I'll post it for you. It's been a couple years, so I can't remember what site I got it from. It was basically using soft flannel for the outer layers, and recycled towels or wash cloths for the inner layers. They worked very well, but weren't as absorbent. I used homemade fleece liners to help keep the moisture off their little bottoms. For covers, the good plastic pants worked the best.
