Hello Ladies
I have a question
Have any of you successfully made your own baby diapers.  I have decided to go cloth this time around.  I am due the end of March.  I have been looking at cloth diapers on ebay etc. I really like the ones where they have the waterproof covvering on the outside.
I am hoping I can get some feedback from some of you who have made your own, any kind any style.
Also would any of you be so kind as to share any patterns you have.  I found a place online to buy a pattern but they are like $12.00 and I really didn't have that to spend on a pattern.  I really think if I could make them myself it would savve a lot.
If you have anything to share I would SO MUCH APPRECIATE IT.
God Bless,
Angie

Hi Angie,

I have made some diapers from a "kit" I purchased at www.diaperkit.com .  Amber is so very helpful and she offers all sorts of different kits, including AIO's.  They come with everything you will need to make it, precut/prewashed and great instructions......there is even a video tutorial on her site.  I have made several and am happy with her products.

Good Luck!!

My Mom made a bunch of diapers for me.  She did not have a pattern.  She used regular not-folded cloth diapers, sewn to size, and a small strip of velcro.  I used diaper covers (waterproof, with velcro) that I found at Target.  Those diapers were great!  They made cloth do-able for me!

I made most my own diapers last time. I will be making more this time because I am going to start cloth diapering sooner since I am assuming I will not be getting enough disposables to last until 6 months again! I found some great sites that give patterns and instructions with pic yesterday and I am getting excited about it again.

I found that flannel sheets you can buy for cheap at rummage sales work great and are cheap to buy. Old clothes, flannel nightgowns, and whatever you can find work well. This time I think I will be using a lot of cheap (gerber and others) diapers to make nice fitted ones. I got a lot last time and never used the prefolds because I am a diapering wimp and hate pins.  Roll Eyes You can get some good deals on elastic, "velcro" type fasteners, and thread online. I think I will be ordering mine here.

The diapers I made worked great. I think this time I will make them thinner and make liners so they dry faster. They took a long time to dry in the dryer and on the line in the summer. ( over an hour in the dryer and almost all day on the line!)

Here's an idea...

A while ago I was reading about a "poor" mama who was wondering about what to wrap her dear one in because she just had a pile of worn out diapers full of holes. She ended up doubling them up and putting stuffing from her coat into the middle, and then sewing/quilting them all together.

I thought this sounded like a mother who really knew how to pinch her pennys. That's my kind of hero!  Grin

Thanks evveryone for all the helpful advice.   I did not get to try to make any yet but I plan to.  I have a bunch of receiving blankets and I thought some of them would make great diapers.
I found a few for a good price as well.  When I get them I might try making a pattern off of one of them.

I just received in the mail today, the cutest diaper cover!     Kiss    http://www.bluepenguin.biz/poso.html  They have  more prints then pictured on their web site.  Mine is a really cute pink plaid.   I would post pics of my LO wearing it, but don't know how to do that.

someone on here once mentioned boiling diapers to kill yeast..do you think this would work on strep too?  everytime I put the AIO's I have on my lttle guy  he breaks out with impetego  blisters.  I want to be able to use these diapers as the never leak and were not very cheap.  Although I am liking prefolds more and more.

How long would I boil them for?  Thanks.

I was using a washing soda/ivory soap dry mix to wash my dipes.  My baby kept getting a dark red rash, not with blisters.  It was obviously painful.   I was told that the plain dawn dishsoap is good, and I switched, and he stopped getting rashes.  Now I'm having a few issues of "stinky" diapers.  They have a little bit of a sour smell all the time.  So, from what ya'll have been saying, borax is good to use for babies?  I haven't used any borax in his dipe washes yet.  Right now I'm soaking them in a peroxide/water/essential lemon oil mix.  I'm a bit nervous about the lemon oil even though there are only a few drops.  I figured it might help with the smell.  Any advice?

Are your diapers 100% cotton or are they another type of fiber?  I am asking because my only experience is with all cotton - but I have loads of experience with cotton after 5 children in diapers.  LOL  But you may have to treat synthetic fabrics differently.

Mine would sometimes have problems with yeast, acidic systems, or bacteria in spite of my soaking, washing, and line drying so I would boil my diapers.   I think it was usually around 7 or 8 months of age that mine would react to the diapers, if they did.  I would get my biggest canning pot going on the stove in a hard, rolling boil and put as many diapers as I could in at a time and keep them boiling for about 10 or 15 minutes.  Then I scooped them out with a big wooden spoon and plopped them into a dishpan.  I rinsed them in cold, running water and took them out to the clothesline for some time in the bright, AZ sunshine.

Boiling an AIO might ruin the water proofing on the outer part.

Right!  I would only recommend boiling 100% cotton diapers.

These are All Together AIO's http://www.alltogetherdiaper.com/all_in_ones.asp

and have an institutional grade waterproof outer shell and multiple interior layers of 100 % cotton material.

Do you think these might withstand the boiling.  I know it is impetego in the dipes

Thanks..

I called and they said I could go up to 180 degress but any hotter would break down the water proofness.  Would you think this could be hot enough to kill the bacteria?  I know it is hot enough to kill bacteria in making yogurt.

I don't know for sure.  Maybe if you kept them at that temperature long enough it would work.   Huh    Maybe a wash in acv or citric acid would kill the germs?   Maybe put some acv or citric acid in the hot water soak?  Don't know what to advise you.  sorry

ok, i've been reading about cloth diapers here..............we are having our last baby end of June, and really trying to save some money. I had BAD BAD experiences babysitting my neighbors kids while I was in highschool and they were cloth diapers.........just grossed me out so I never wanted to try them.
Well, I have a question: what if you can't wash them in hot water? we live in Taiwan where you can't get hot water hooked up to the washer. how would you go about it then? we have a dryer and  we don't have a place that gets a good amount of sonlight all day (aka.....we live in a row house, no yard). I could probably use my balcony on the 3rd floor, but I will have to see how and when the sun comes through there.

there are lots of sights about cloth diapers, but what is really needed to start out? any thread on "cloth diapers for dummies?" seriously..............I think my dh MAY go with me on this, but he is afraid I think of spending the money and then us not liking it and losing all that money................i am so confused as to what to do.............any suggestions for total beginners with slight fears of the grossness of the issue (I gag easily!!!) would be greatly appreciated

For those of you who've made wool soaker covers... Do you have to lanolize them? And how do you care for them...just like any bought wool cover? Also, do you felt them or just leave them as they are?

Has anyone used SposoEasy AIO from Green Mountain Diapers? I have a friend who switched from FB's to these & loves them. I looked at them & they look great. I am doing FB's now & kind of get tired of stuffing the inserts before using. I love the FB's otherwise.

Didn't check the link to be sure they're the same, but we use and love our Snappis for our prefolds.  I've tried not using them and there's more leakage/mess.

There is a thread on the g diapers HERE. I wrote:

I have to say that I really like them too. Not only are they cute as all get out, they are so easy to use. I am using cloth inserts in them instead of the disposable inserts they sell, and I just love the fact that I can use the same diaper all day long by just changing out the insert (and snap in a new liner if I need to).
I've only had to change out the liner, during a diaper change, once. All the rest of the time I've just had to replace the wet insert with a dry one. So easy!

Or you can go to their site http://www.gdiapers.com/

WR

thanks for the answers!  soon as i posted that, there they were, on page 4 or 5!!  oh, well!

ok, WR, i realize this was two years ago, but i am thinking these G diapers sound awesome and easy for a beginner.  did you get the cloth inserts from their site too, or is there a cheaper way to do that?  boy, i have a lot to learn!  it seems the more i read, the more confused i was til i got to the G diapers.
