Have any of you heard what Drs. are now saying about Vit. D in babies. My SIL was telling me about it. I've not heard it, but she said she saw it on TV. Something about how because moms aren't getting enough Vit. D that their babies aren't getting enough because not much comes through breastmilk so they're saying moms and children under 1 I think need Vit. D supplements. I don't even know what the symptoms of not enough Vit. D are. As far as I know me and mine are fine. Has anyone else heard about this??

From what I remember, lack of vit. D produces rickets, sometimes called soft bones.

If you and your kids get in the sun regularly and eat a varied and reasonably healthy diet, you are probably just fine.

Sun shining directly on your skin produces vit. D in your body.

I just read about the low vit D levels in my KIWI magazine.  It also mentioned that a breastfed baby needs vitD supplementation.  My first thought was "What?"  I tend to figure that God gave mommy milk everything that a baby needs, including vitD.  Perhaps if a mother is not eating a balanced diet, or getting enough sunlight then her milk may be lacking.  We also need to consider the people of the far north.  They have very little sunlight during the winter and I am sure their breastfed babies have grown.   If they are still living there generations later, then something must have gone right.  Wink
I have a friend who's pediatrition just told her that she either needed to give her baby a multivitamin or stop breastfeeding.  The first time mom asked me what I thought.  My opinion was that God is supplying the perfect food for her baby, and that I would fore go the synthetic vitamins.  She agreed, but was not sure what to do since the advice came from her Dr.  Another seasoned mother/grandma (this conversation took place at church) told her to find a new Dr. Cheesy
Now you have my opinion.  Wink

Very interesting! I don't think it's something I need to worry about then. I eat a pretty healthy diet and I'm getting a decent amount of sun right now, so I think I'm good! Thanks!

for what it's worth...

I just talked to a friend of mine who has MS and mercury toxicity.  Her doc has her on 5000 iu's a day of Vit D for these issues.  Pregnant, nursing, or not, he told her to do it all through, no problems with pregnancy or nursing.

Hope that is encouraging.  I don't have any more references, sorry.

The fish (cod, salmon, pike, etc.) that provide a good portion of the diet for most people of far northern climates provide a good portion of vitamin D.  However, I can testify that when I stopped taking enough vitamin D while nursing my baby did NOT grow.  In fact, she is one year old and only between 15 - 16 lbs... only three pounds heavier than her healthy June weight of 13.5lbs... when I was supplementing with vitamin D in the form of Carlson's cod liver oil.

People from the north have always historically had very high amounts of fish and fat in their diet.  This is probably why they didn't need Vit D supplementation.

I chose to skip the synthetic Vit. D supplements as well and to instead give him natural Vit. D sources. I read online that you'd have to eat 4 oz. of salmon a day to get your daily requirement of Vit. D so I chose to go with Carlson's Cod liver Oil because you get 400IU in one teaspoon, plus it's lemon flavored and my son drinks it straight. He doesn't mind it a bit! I hope it works. Either way it's better than nothing!

Either one is recommended for optimum health.  I personally cannot swallow pills, so I take Carlson's Lemon flavored CLO. TRUST ME, I am such a big sissy when it comes to nasty tasty things.  This was not fishy at oil.  It tasted oily, like a peanut or safflower oil, but NOT fishy.

I think you absorb the liquid form better because you don't have a capsule to break down. Anyway, I give my son Carlson's Lemon flavored CLO too, and he loves it! HTH.

Does anyone tan?

I had purchased some D3 at Costco but was concerned about taking the right amount.  It seems that soaking up some rays is the best option, (you're more likely to not OD).  We got our tanning unit from Mercola, I love it!  Maybe it's mental, but my mood is improved.  Even being in the south, winters can be dreary.  I'd much rather treat melanoma vs other cancers or sicknesses...just my 1/2 cent. I am seventeen weeks pregnant and was just told I am low in Vit D. I believe I was at 16? Anyway my ND perscribed 2000IU a day. My question is this...I am not really all that into suplements unless they are food based. Is CLO my best option? What foods are high in vit D...I know raw milk and sunflower seeds/sprouts have been mentioned, any others? Also, In about a month or so spring will hit and my outdoor time will greatly increase as I get into gardening and yard work...should I back off on suplementation then?

I would say that CLO may not be your best option. The ratio of vit. D to A is not usually high enough. If you are not into supplements, fish, especially salmon, is high in vit. D. Other foods, like milk and cereal, are artificially fortified with vit. D, which may not be the greatest source. Sounds like you like to get your vitamins from whole food sources.

Also-I just got vit. D drops from luckyvitamin.com. I think the brand is Carlson's. One drop is equal to 2,000 IU vit. D. It's a nice option to having to swallow pills all the time... Tongue

As far as backing off on the supplementation come spring, I think I would ask your ND, since he/she was the one that tested you in the first place.

HTH!

There is research out about vitamin D preventing cancer, diabetes, MS, flu, ect.......
I am trying to spread the word about The Vitamin D-action Project. It is a study, with at home-Vitamin D test kits provided at a very cheap cost of only $40. (My doctor refused to test me for my Vit D levels)

http://www.grassrootshealth.net/

I  had my vitamin D levels tested at  home with a kit, from Grassrootshealth.com and I am participating in a study about vitamin D and our health.

My level was only 31!!!!!!!! It is supposed to be between40-60 So I am taking about 4,000 IU per day now of the D3.  Then they will automaticly send me a new kit in 6 months and I have to fill out a new questionarre about my health every 6 months.

I know that vitamin D could help alot of people, if they would get their levels tested and see how low they are. I have been taking vitamin D for months, and I am still only at 31. I cant imagine what I was when I started the vitamin D back in Feb.

$40 is a very good price for a vit D test.  Life Extension also has a good price, as well as ZRT.  You want the 25-hydroxyvitamin D test, also called a 25(OH)D and you want the method of testing to be Liason by DiaSorin.  (ZRT uses Liason, I am not sure about the others.)

NOTE: If you use Quest, remember their lab test is different from Lab Corp (Liason) so the numbers from Quest come in high.  To compare the technique Quest uses to the technique Lab Corp uses you must divide Quest's result by 1.3.

Dr. Cannell (www.vitamindcouncil.com) just sent out a newsletter (7/09) making the connection between magnesium deficiency and an inability to use supplemental vitamin D.  You might want to look into that, herbs girl.

The recommendation was a handful of magnesium-rich seeds and nuts daily together with a serving of dark leafy greens.  (Toss a handful of sunflower or pumpkin or sesame seeds on a spinach salad.)

The recommendation for vitamin D levels varies.  For chronic conditions or severe illness (e.g. cancer) some doctors recommend levels between 75 and 100 ng/ml.  For the expected swine flu resurgence in the fall of 2009,  Cannell recommends a level of at least 50 ng/ml.

DHW- The test from Grassroots is actually tested by ZRT laboratories
I know they are high quality lab! I know, $40 for vit D test is like a steal. My mom said they paid 125-175 something like that for my brothers Vit D test, and they had to DEMAND the doctor for the test. He didnt want to give it to them.....itsnt it crazy? Roll Eyes

Quote.....
http://www.grassrootshealth.net/d-action
Testing of vitamin D levels
GrassrootsHealth is sponsoring the use of blood spot test kits (laboratory analysis done by ZRT Labs) for a $40.00 fee to each individual. The tests are to be done twice a year by each individual along with the submission of some basic health data. The kits are not available as a ‘stand alone’ without health data

I do like the VitaminDcouncil also, I read his stuff.

MY goal is giving my 6 yr old-2,000 IU/day D3
                           5 yr. old 2,000 IU/day D3
                             3yr old2,000 IU/day
                              8 mo.l old 800-1,000 IU/day

According to John Cannell, this is the proper dosages for those ages.

About the Magnesium, I have used Natural Calm for myself for a while, and I started my husband on Magnesium recently too, now he doesnt hardly ever have to use his inhaler for asthma anymore!! Smiley My 6 yr old son is also on Magnesium for hyper/adhd symptoms. It definatly is good stuff!

Dr James Dowd, the author of the The Vitamin D Cure book says that Magnesium, Vitamin D, and Fish oil are synergystic to each other In other words, its a really good idea to take them together, they complement each other!

My MD just decided yesterday to have my blood taken to test for Vit D deficiency, as I have chronic pain issues that he is suspecting could be due to this.

Has anyone had success in raising their Vitamin D levels, and if you have, how did you go about supplementation?

Thank you!

I am in the process of rasing mine now. I have upped my dose to 5,000 IU Vitamin D3 per day.

A general rule is 1000 IU for each 10 ng/ml you want to raise it. So if my levels were 31, I was already taking around 2,000 for alot of the time before I got tested, so to make it go up to 60 ng/ml, I would take 3,000 more IU per day than I was already taking when I got tested.... if I want to go up 30 points or so.

Does it make sense? Wink

I test every 6 months, then I will adjust doses according to what my levels are.

My mom has got my brother's checked at her local MD's office. It was some where around 175$ if I am remembering right. If you do it through the GrassRoots Vitamind D place...link in my signature, it is only $40, because they are doing a study.  It is accurate, and incredibly easy to do at home. I think I am going to be due for another Vit D test from them soon in Dec/Jan. I have been on 4- 5,000 IU most days.

We just started taking D3 supplements this Fall.  My husband and I take around 4400-5400 IU a day and my kids get around 1000-1200 IU a day from supplements.  I tried to get the doctor here to test our levels and he did, but the lab sent my results back saying they won't test for vitamin D levels unless the doctor can show a very good reason for doing so.  Apparently, they are overwhelmed with requests for vitamin D level and it's too "expensive" for them to do it at $50 a pop.

Anyway, I'm too nervous not to take them due to all the information and benefits I've been reading on vitamin D, but at the same time, I do wonder if maybe we are taking too much or maybe not enough.  I may have to try again to see if the doctor will get our levels checked...the whole family.

By the way, I'm in Atlantic Canada, so we don't get much sunshine during the winter.  So far, we've been quite healthy, unlike last Fall/Winter when my oldest brought home all kinds of bugs from school.  This last summer was the first time we went sunscreen free so that we could get proper vitamin D from the sun.  I unfortunately burned a couple of times Sad  Hopefully next summer I will have it down pat and not do that again.  The kids did great though!
