What type of stevia is she using?  The kind that comes in little packets is also a fiber supplement, and can cause bloating.  It has a Horrible aftertaste.  The liquid kind is best for sweetening drinks, I think.  We use the sweetleaf brand.  There is a difference between brands, if you get a bad one, it's pretty gross.  Keep trying, it really is good if you find the right kind, and so much better for you!

My mom got a no name brand at an Amish bulk food store.  It is powdered.  She didn't have such a problem with the taste.  She mentioned to someone that she was having some bloating and her gynecologist sent her for an ultra sound just in case it was ovarian cancer.  I don't think she has any results from that yet.  Apparently some 'friends' told her it was a sign of that.  I'm guessing detox now that I've got this input.  I'm glad she's using caution but we don't have a history of cancer on that side of the family so unless the fake sugar caused it (that would be no surprise!) I don't think that is the problem.  I wondered about the fiber in the powder, too.  I knew it added a good bit to your diet.  She could use that if it's detox but I guess she might want to start drinking some water...good luck with that!

Just so no one freaks out that there may be side effects to this herb...I spoke to my mom and now she tells me that she was having the bloating before she started using stevia (they think it's reflux and complications) and as for me...I was in the beginning of a pregnancy/miscarriage.  No ill effects due to stevia.

I always used the powdered Stevia " with fiber" in the past ... never had an issue with the bitter taste . Recently I bought the liquid and used it in Yerba Mate which I enjoyed.. someone said something to me a l,ong time ago about Stevia perhaps causing some disruption on hormonal balance, but I never pursued it because I didn't feel I used enough of it to matter.

We accidentally got the brown-colored liquid by Sweetleaf last time and it was NOT good.  We find the clear liquid form very palatable, though.

Em-

Only thing I have found for the leaf (not the extract) is as a sweetener in a hot liquid.    Here's one link with an example:

http://www.stevia-plant.com/questions.cfm

I've seen it as leaf in tea bags for sweetening tea.  But I can't imagine how it would be used in a non-brewing situation.  I would be tempted to stick leaves in some vodka (as with vanilla beans) in an attempt to make a liquid extract - but I have NO idea or link or experience that shows proves it works.  Just a tendancy to experiment.

How's that for nearly no help?

If it's in it's raw form it tastes very "herby" and it's not as strong as the refined whited stuff.  Because of it's "grassy" taste, I personally wouldn't use it for anything but as a sweetener in herbal tea or possibly a tincture.

I bought this from the BHS (both forms - unrefined).  I made lemonade with it (like I did with the refined, white kind)...YUCK!   Tongue  Plus, our lemonade was GREEN.  I also tried it in our smoothies.  Blech.   Tongue  However, in herbal teas, it's not so bad.  Unless there's a reason to not use the white, refined kind, I'll stick with it from now on.

When she mentioned this in a tincture, my first thought was, "hmm... I wonder if that would help make Jungle Juice less yucky tasting?"

I use the liquid in my tea...black...VERY rich, as in 1000times the taste of, say, molasses, plus bitter. I prefer the powdered, but since I have the tincture i have been using it and not dissappointed as long as I don't use too much ( more than 4 drops ).

Any risks in drinking water sweetened with stevia all day everyday? my friend only drinks water AND only with something in it...we got her off of splenda so now it's stevia.

Try lemon or lime...the stevia should be fine, though.  Maybe even with the lemon or lime!

Some reports I believe(it may say further up) say it can cause infertility.  Now, we need only discern if this is a "rumor" started by the artificial sweetening business.  The real reason I wanted to post was that I had been using stevia almost(ok EVERY) day.  I used it in tea and other things one would normally put sweetener in.  I started to have irregular periods that came to a complete stop about 2 yrs ago.  No explaination.  The docs did a prometrium challenge twice.  Both times I menstrtuated.  They said this meant I had enough estrogen to have a a period, but that I was not balanced for some reason.  Well, I stopped using stevia about 3 months ago.    Within 3 wks of stopping I had a period!   Don't know what this means, probably just a coincidence.  Anyway,  if she starts to or already experiences any issues like this she may need a holiday from it for awhile.

Interesting, I have read that info was unfounded and HB uses it and has  3(?) kids while using it so it seems to be false, but then again, that is a big coinkydink for you!

I just ordered the leaf from BHS, too, and now I'm thinking, what *do* I do with this stuff???  So, for a tincture, would I just go buy some Vodka at the local store <LOL, I just *look* like an alcoholic purchasing this.. too funny  Roll Eyes >, and then I put ? much leaves, in ? much vodka, for ? length of time?  Anyone know?  ~ Jeanne

I bought my first bottle yesterday after reading that BHS Mama's brew tea can be made w/ it.  It's a bottle of powdered stevia w/ a little scoop (maybe NOW)--$7 that boasts of no bitter aftertaste.

This was my 1st experience w/ it (trying to reduce my maple syrup intake for yeast reduction)...I put one of the teeny tiny scoops in a big mug of hot caramel latte (usually takes 1 T maple syrup) and WOW!  It was just as sweet!   Shocked  I'm quite encouraged to use it in drinks and yogurt...

could someone enlighten me?Huh  this is my second attempt at using stevia and i really want to like it this time, cuz i am doing the yeast cleanse.  i have some in my tea right now, and it doesn't seem to cut the bitterness like raw sugar, and to me does have a bitter aftertaste.  it seems just like all the other sugar substitutes to me.  i have never been able to stand diet pop at all.  so is this something i am just going to have to get used to?  did you all like it right away?  i bought the kind HB recommended.  it's NOW powder, just like yooper said above.  help!  stevia for dummies???   Huh

I purchased some of the French Vanilla liquid(www.wisdomnaturalbrands.com) and we love it in Kefir and plain yogurt. They sell the 4-flavors Tin (Travel size) for $15.99 from SweetLeaf. The 2 oz bottles of liquid flavored stevia are $13.98. I got mine on a special deal having bought a box of the regular stevia packets as well.
The lemon drop was good too!
4 drops per 8 oz of water or sparkling water. It does not promote tooth decay and is totally heat stable.

My thought is that you're using either too much or not enough.  If you're getting an aftertaste, probably too much.  It only takes maybe 1/3 of the spoon that comes with it in a cup of coffee.  I would experiment with the amounts and also, put it in before the tea to make sure it doesn't float on top.  That can ruin a cup of coffee, cuz it's so strong.

I agree that the powdered stevia is bitter with an aftertaste.  YUK!  When we make drinks, we use liquid stevia.  The kind we use is: Stevita liquid extract.  It's in a white bottle with a green lid, in the natural section of our grocery store.  It's about $5 for 1.35 ounces, and it lasts a really long time.  To me, it has no aftertaste, it's just sweet.  MUCH better than the powdered kind. I'd definitely start with that.

okie dokie!  thanks to you both.  i am going to try it again in my morning coffee and will try 1/3, it just seems hard to do that cuz it's so little!  guess if i can't figure it out with this brand i will try a different one.  i put some in my son's kefir/berry drink which he seems to have outgrown and doesn't like the taste.  he didn't like it any better, but he drinks it anyway.  will keep experimenting.  thanks!
