I haven't tried this, but I'd guess that buying a bottle of unpasteurized kombucha and using it as a starter would work as well.

Rebekah

I have tried this... I did add 3/4 c. of apple cider vinegar to the first batch to make it more acidic, as that was suggested somewhere I was reading at the time.

The first batch didn't taste so great, but it did grow a great scoby, and the subsequent batches turned out great... so it worked for me at least.

Oh to have time to do kombucha again...  Grin Grin Grin

A year ago I accidently blitzed my kefir grains in the blender with the smoothie. I had the "dirty" jar of kefir left and, out of curiosity, I filled it with milk again and shook it up to blend the left over kefir dregs with the fresh milk. 48 hours later I had kefir again.

That was a year ago. I've been making kefir with a bit of leftover kefir each time, just like you do with yogurt. It is nice and smooth, thick, and tastes great.

So, last week I decided to try the same thing with a store-bought kefir smoothie (it also had organic sugarcane juice and black cherry concentrate) that had not been pasteurized. Again, I had good kefir in about 36 hours.  Cheesy

So, apparently, the grains and the starter pouches are not necessary. All you need is some unpasteurized kefir.

I haven't tried this, but I'd guess that buying a bottle of unpasteurized kombucha and using it as a starter would work as well.

Rebekah

I have been wondering about this, it just seemed like you should be able to do this.  Been wanting to make kefir, but hadn't gotten around to getting the grains.  Thanks for experimenting for us!

As for kombucha, I think  when we were first discussing kombucha, "years" ago on WTM it did come up that you could make some with just kombucha, but that it does take a little longer to get going.

Hey, anyone have a kombucha "bar" at their local health food store?  We have one, bring your own bottle to refill, and it is sold by the pound.  Haven't tried it, as we make our own, but thought it was an interesting idea.

So, I tried making kefir without the grains, just some other kefir, and it worked great!  And, all I can find is pastuerized kefir, and it was fine.

I think that only works for so long and then you have to start over.  It's great to have the live grains, since you could conceivably have them for years!

I need some kefir grains, we have started our homestead and have dairy goats and starter is just a waste of time and money, but I can't find a place to buy grains.

Please contact me I will be happy to pay. I actually need them pretty bad right now as I have a 1 year old with chronic diarrhea I can't seem to get rid of with just yogurt.

Thanks,
Alysha
