I just read on another thread that clove oil placed on the sore spot will help.

My friend got these things called "Teething Tablets," which were homeopathic and looked to be made out of natural ingredients to me, and they seemed to really work. She got them at the local drugstore! The main ingredient was chamomile. They had a warning on them that your baby may fall asleep soon after taking them because he or she will finally be out of pain. They seemed to work for my friend!

Hi...this is the "friend"...hey, Julia, I recognized you by your posts!  The brand of teething tablets is Hylands.  I've used their earache tabs as well with great results.  I usually get them at CVS, but I think I saw them at Walmart the other day.  I once found another brand while in another state, but I don't recall what it was.

Here's the website with info on the product:

We have also used clove oil in this house. I even recommend it for adults who have mouth pain.

I know old timers have recommended a swab of whiskey on the gums. I have never tried it though. (Before someone says it - there is NOTHING wrong with putting one swab of alcohol on the gums. It is not like you are filling the bottle and getting a child drunk with it Smiley)

We would put an ice cube in a small baby wash rag and tie with a rubber band for the kids to gnaw on.  Also, for pain relief we used Lobelia directly on the gums.
I have heard of some using vanilla extract and certain alcohols for a child's gums, too.

There is also this thread:

The Hylands teething tablets are AWESOME! When my daughter was getting her molars in, she would be so fussy and her cheeks would be all red. I'd give her a couple of them and within minutes she was fine again!!!I would even give her a couple before bed to help her sleep easier and thay always work. I get them at Rite Aid in town for like $3 something. Worth every cent to us!

Hylands tablets work great.  I also used this stuff from Herbs for Kids called gumomile.  You rub it on their gums.  Worked better than Lobelia for my little guy.

I posted on the wrong thread a minute ago, so I am reposting here. She has gone to try the vanilla. She is 20 yrs. old and laughs about still cutting teeth. But good news, this is her last tooth.

Any help will be appreciated.
My Dd is cutting her upper and lower Left wisdom tooth. Her cheek is swollen and killing her. The gum is puffed and now the cheek is puffed. She has been putting on clove oil every few hours. This helps a lot. She says clove oil is so much better than some amosol (?) Baby toothing ointment. I was going to have her rinse with the GSE just in case she might get infected. Any ideas? Ice?? We are at a loss. She has room for the teeth. They just plain hurt coming in.

I remember my wisdom teeth coming in...they hurt too.  the dentist gave me a syringe and I used that to rinse the area with salt water (I had flaps of gum that needs cleaned under).  Maybe garlic cloves if you are worried of infection.  Or, seriously, she could take those hylands tablets and the gumomile from herbs for kids that I mentioned earlier really works.  Oh, There is this stuff I also have called toothe ache relief.  It has clove, cinnamon, and oregano oils.  It burns though, I will warn you (I leanred this the hard way as I gave it to my infant for teething and he SCREAMED!  I learned the hard way to always test things before putting them in his mouth)
I am sure ice would be OK for the swollen cheeks.

Oldest DS got his 1st 2 wisdom teeth about the same age, the last 2 are still coming in. He uses clove oil. I had him try Vodka on it once because booze will help numb it & it did help but he hated the taste so much he stuck with the clove. I used rum when I was a teen & mine were coming in. I used to soak a wad of TP in it & keep it back there. I think I even used 151 proof a few times. But then too I wasn't an angel when I was a teen & I used to drink 151 & Pepsi when I was a teen. Not often, but I did do it. I don't suggest the 151, though for someone who has never drank it. Shocked Shocked Shocked Other than that, I don't know. DS's has came in fairly easy & mine gave me a lot of pain because they were impacted & got stuck. They had to be pulled & it turned out the roots were shaped opposite of what they should have been. OUCH.

There are herbal pain formulas. Maybe that would help. Also calcium & magnesium help cut pain. Sorry I'm not much help. Blessings ~herbalmom

Are rashes common w/ teething?  My 7 mo. old baby has a terrible rash on his cheeks, neck, and tummy.  The only thing I can link it to is teething.  He's been on the same formula for a while, so I don't know why he would suddenly have a reaction to it.  Any thoughts?

It's possible, I suppose, but I would be more inclined to think allergy.  Have you changed detergent or gotten new clothing lately that might be causing it?

I know of this sort of thing happening from drool.  Is the drool from his teething touching these areas, if so I would think that it is the teething.  With my son we had to change shirts often throughout the day, because he wouldn't keep a bib on.

It could be a combination of dry air and teething.  My kids, especially my second, did the same thing during winter and teething.  You may want to try putting a little oil on right after a bath, or putting oil directly in their bath.  (Or running a vaporizer/humidifier.) Huh

I have read, and have also been advised, that the colic tablets work even better for teething.  Both of the recommended are Hylands brand.

His rash is such a puzzle to me because I haven't changed clothing or detergents.  ( I make my own and have been since he was born)  I only bathe him in water and baking soda and try not to bathe him too often.  I've been putting Aquafor by Eucerin and pure Lanolin on him.  Yesterday I switched him to goat's milk, just to see if that would help.  It doesn't really seem better yet.  (I change him often and make sure he's dry too.)  Any other ideas?

Not sure where I read/heard this and I am making my own conclusions but rashes during teething times can be a sign of a lack of calcium. Anyone else heard/read about this? The theory being that the body needs extra calcium while the teeth are coming in and it robs it from other places. I wish I would start writing things down. Anyone else can chime in here.  Wink I know this only like half of what I remember hearings. Sigh...I'll go hang my head in shame.  Roll Eyes

The calcium deficiency sounds like it could be a possibility.  Maybe try homeopathic cell salts from hfs.

Another idea is fats.  Can you get some good fats into his diet?

any one hear that you're not supposed to touch the teething tablets? i was just informed of that because the oil  or something in our fingers cancels out the herbal properties since it is such a minute amount. anyways- just curious...mine haven't been working all that great recently. tired and sore for baby teething on me and ready to try the vanilla now!

So... how do you get them in the mouth?  Plus the bottle says to place under tongue.  I've used Hylands teething tablets, they will dissolve quickly, and if you have warm/sweaty hands, I'd assume they'd "melt".  (I wouldn't know, as my hands are always cold.)  They've always worked fine for my kids.  When the teething got really bad I even used up to 4 tablets.  I tried the vanilla the other night, and it didn't seem to do what I though it'd do.  Maybe that's because my babies' Daddy is half Irish and half German.  It takes a lot more than vanilla to get them calmed down! Wink Grin  I went back to the teething tablets, and drank me some vanilla!  Cheesy Hope you find something that works for your baby, though.

I think you're supposed to use the cap...spill the tablets in there, and use it to flip them into the mouth.  Yeah, easy, I know.   Roll Eyes

I thought someone posted recently asking about babies and clove oil for teething pain?  Couldn't find the exact post, but I just found this recipe, and thought I'd post it here:

Natural Teething Gel
1 ounce pure vegetable glycerin
2 drops essential oil of clove
Add one drop of clove to your glycerin and shake it until it
is well blended. Test it on yourself to make sure it is not
too strong before adding another drop. For a young baby
I use 2 drops. You could use vegetable oil instead of
glycerin if you want. Glycerin is very sweet so it makes
the remedy a bit more appealing.

I used clove oil when Pickle was teething, I must have gotten the idea here. Anyway you can also use it for toothache pain until you can get to the dentist. We use it on zits and for bug bites that look like they might get infected. I also use it to treat fungal rashes with good success. It is a pain reliever, an antiseptic, and an antifungal. I'm sure there's more but those are the three things I can remember off the top of my head.

It is funny, I think I am the one who started this thread all those years ago not knowing what to do for my baby.

Well, now on my third my remedy of choice is a muslin bag filled with equal parts chamomile flowers and lavender flowers, close it well and let the baby chew away the pain and fall asleep.

You can also make a chamomile tea, soak a washcloth in it, wring it out a bit before giving it to baby to chew on.

Its normal for babies fever to be around 103-104 with teething, right? My 13 month old has had fever on and off this year, and now she almost has all her baby teeth.    ALot of places say that babies should not have temp over 101 while teething, but I am pretty sure these times of fever are from teeth.
