Abcess: Infected Tooth & Gums: Natural Healing & Pain Relief
« on: February 22, 2007, 07:11:01 PM » by MommytoFour
I have severe pain right now, due to an abcessed tooth. I made a dentist appointment, but I have to wait two weeks because of financial reasons. Does anyone know of any home remedies that could help alleviate the pain a little? It is starting to affect the entire right side of my face.

When my husband had an infection in his gums around his wisdom tooth I made a myrrh and garlic poultice and it helped the pain and after 2 days the infection was gone. He was also swishing a droperful of goldenseal/echinacea tincture in that area of his mouth a few times a day. I read a great book from the library a while back called healthy mouth healthy body written by a homeopathic dentist. Theres all kinds of natural remedies in it. Great book!!

Hi! I need detail... I have a sinus infection right now, and along with that I believe (haven't gone to the dr) that I also have a gum infection around my wisdom teeth. I'm in a lot of pain! Shocked I've tried to swish back there, but I don't know how? Huh Roll Eyes When I swish, it seems to just go over all the teeth except the ones in pain! Undecided Can you tell me more about the poultice that you did? I'm sorry, I just always need pretty much step by step instructions.... oh yeah, what is an abcessed tooth?

I have a new holistic MD and he suggested a dentist that uses ozone to treat infection down deep in the tubules.  He said he has seen major improvement in many patients with chronic fatigue when they have this done.  He said they have a infection down deep where antibiotics and the like can't reach and this is injected in the nerve and goes directly to the infection and blasts it out.  Sounds promising but scary.  Anybody know anything about this?

No, I've never heard of it BUT my husband and I have used therapeutic-grade essential oils for abscessed teeth and other nerve problems. Therapeutic-grade (t-g) essential oils (e.o.) have the ability to penetrate the cell wall and transport oxygen and nutrients inside the cell. Research shows they are high in antimicrobial properties which help fight disease. There are trace elements of nutrients, hormones, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, antibodies, and antifungal, antibacterial, anti-infectious, antiseptic, and immune-stimulating properties.  E.O. contain antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic properties fight cancer, modulate the immune system, balance hormones, reduces inflammation which causes pain, regulate blood glucose and more.

My husband and I are using t-g essential oils for most all our health care needs. From sore throats, swollen glands, bruises, cuts, cramps, etc. If you'd like additional information on e.o. feel free to contact me. My husband and I teach e.o. classes and love to help!

I would love to try these oils probably instead of what I'm already doing which is many herbs, silver colloid plus many other things.  These sound like they are way more potent.  Just an update on the ozone injections.  I had two done and the feeling was uphoric!  I am a little sore at the injection site but the feeling in my body is unbelievable.  I just hope it continues to improve.  At the price they cost though I will not be able to attack this all at once, so I'm thinking the oils might be a good adjunct.

I strongly suggest getting Young Living's CLOVE OIL and THIEVES OIL BLEND.
Clove oil is the highest antioxidant substance in the world and it has the natural numbing agent eugenol which should help with your pain. I actually have a friend who got off morphine by using clove. My husband and friends have used it with many tooth and gum problems.
Clove oil is one of the most antimicrobial and antiseptic of all essential oils. It is antifungal, antiviral, and anti-infectious.
Thieves Blend is highly antiviral, antiseptic, antibacterial, and  antiinfectious essential oil. It contains clove oil, lemon oil, cinnamon bark oil, eucalyptus oil, and rosemary oil.
One of my friends, Margie, had an abcessed tooth which she couldn't afford to get fixed right away. She had let it get really bad before telling me about it. She had a continually headache, stiffness down her neck, pain in her jaw. Thankfully she told me about it one night and I was able to get her some THIEVES. The next day she had no more headache and by day three of using the oil the infection was gone. It was amazing! God is good!

There's a great book my husband and I make available to people at a discount called the Essential Oils Desk Reference by Essential Science Publications. It's a great book that can answer pretty much any questions you might have about t-g essential oils.

If you have additional questions feel free to contact me.

Over the new year my brother had an adcessed tooth and I had read that Ionic silver will work for this but, I didn't know from experience. Any how we tried it and it worked. He took 3 oz. the first time and then 1 oz. 3 times a day for 7 days. He also took calcium with it. My brother is not into natural things but was desperate so,he will get a root canal so I don't know how long term it would be.We got it from a guy in Indiana that makes it. It is $20.00 a gallon unless you want it shipped to you.

My 6 yr old had a cap put on one of her molars over a year ago.  I guess now it could be even as much as 2 years ago.  About 6 months ago the area under neath bulged and looked funny but I figured she just poked it when she was eating and let it go.   Over time it changed and then pus came out of it.    It has been a few months and I keep cleaning it out and having her swish with salt water.  It helps for a bit but it seems if I miss a day then it starts to revert again.  Well,  I guess I am to the point where I feel like the dentist is inevitable.   It is a 2 hour drive one way and I am a mom of 6 children so you can see why I have had resistance towards going to the dentist and was hoping we could do something here myself.

Is there any way to heal it here or does it have to have a root canal??  I really dont want my girl on antibodics or anything else but at the same time, I dont want it to damage her permanent teeth.  It was her baby tooth that was capped.

Thanks!!

I have been taking Soveriegn Silver about 15 droppers a day, and that has definatly kept the infection down until I can get to the dentist in a few days. I put it on  my tooth/gum and then hold it in my mouth for 5 minutes before swallowing.

About two years ago, I had my first ever bout with gum infection. This was during an extensive cleanse where I (in retrospect) was not aggressive enough with a supplementation of digestive enzymes and probiotics. (I now believe that cleanses act much like antibiotics killing off all of the good with the bad -- posts for another thread  Undecided). At any rate, I believe that the bacteria in my oral cavity became imbalanced, led to an overgrowth of the bad bacteria and began to eat away at the soft gum tissue between two teeth. A problem I've never had before.

I had surgery to correct the problem and healed nicely. Last year, following another cleanse (where again, I was not AGGRESSIVE in follow up with pro-biotics and enzymes) the gum in that same area became very infected again. The entire side of my face was swollen along with the pallet and gum, making it difficult to bite because the soft tissue was pushing the teeth out of alignment. The pallet was pressing down on my tongue. Lovely.

I had the gum taken care of by applying raw slices of garlic to the area and holding it there for extended times. I would then chew and swallow the garlic. The gum and swelling subsided, but I could still feel pockets of infection deep at the root of the tooth (this was an upper molar).

Of course, after testing the affected tooth, the specialist recommended a root canal, declaring the tooth dead. He couldn't find any cavity or crack in the tooth and had no answers as to how the tooth could have become inflamed, he just had one trick in his bag to offer. So, I thanked him for his time with my money  Angry and left.

I began a regimen of neem oil, a dropper full at full strength into my sinus cavity as I figured out that the infection had moved there  Tongue. I have nothing good to say about the taste of neem oil  Tongue Tongue Tongue, but that stuff is quite effective and penetrating. Taken by the dropperful and leaning backwards allowed it to coat the inside of the passage. I had to do this on an empty stomach. I don't gag easily, but this stuff is an oil and quite penetrating. As it reached my throat, some of the oil would invariably manage to get onto my taste buds. I would rinse this way also with a few drops of colloidal silver.

In addition to this, I filled a vegetarian capsule with neem oil morning and evening for an oral dose.

This granted even more improvement. Of course, I continued to take probiotics throughout all of this time.

I followed up with the family dentist who was flabbergasted that the specialist hadn't even offered the option of antibiotics. He knows my preference to stay away from them, but suggested that I continue with my current course and utilize the anti-biotics in an effort to restore the tooth and get at any hidden bacteria, continuing with the probiotics and the neem oil to kill off the bad bacteria that would be weakened by the prescription. My husband & I agreed to go ahead with this course. The antibiotics were for ten days.

I also purchased a netti pot and began to rinse my sinus cavity using it. I used 1/2 tsp. sea salt, a dropperful of neem oil and a dropper full of colloidal silver to 8 oz of warm, filtered water.

These methods were utilized over about four months of time. The ant-biotics were utilized about half-way through (2 1/2 months or so into treatment?). If none of them worked, I figured I would either end up with a root canal or a pulled tooth. In the meantime, I wanted to see what I could do using my own protocol (rather than making the endodontist's car payment  Wink).

I've been quite satisfied with the results. The swelling has gone down. The swelling in my face and mouth have gone. I have some feeling returning to the tooth, it has returned to it's normal position. However, I do think that the tooth is still mostly dead-feeling. Since there is no crack on the surface, and the endodontist cannot confirm (without a root canal) that the tooth is actually dead, I'm glad to leave things as they are. Wink

I suspect that the inflammation around the tooth's root likely had strangled the nerve endings and with the swelling and infection gone and continuing to be treated with daily neem oil capsules, they may (if they can) regain additional sensation.

Time will tell. For now, I have avoided an expensive and likely unnecessary procedure.  Undecided Smiley

Modification/Addition: I should have mentioned also that during the entire course of treatment, I had trusted partners praying for healing along with myself and dh.

Thanks SC! I have my 4th infection in about 3 weeks+ time. 3 mouth infections and 1 bladder infection. I am on my seconed course of antibiotics. Today is my last day for the antibiotics, and my abcess came back a few days ago. He has pulled two of my teeth in the last 3 weeks, now will he have to pull ANOTHER ONE ? I am about at my wits end. It seems the infection is just spreading from tooth to tooth. I am taking propolis, Vit C with bioflavinoids. I am also taking Collidial silver, and holding hydrogen peroxide in my mouth.

Can someone please  give me some insight, do I have some sort of disease or something?  This is probably the 10-12 time I have been on antibiotics within the  last 3 years for an abcess or tooth problem. I just cant figure out what to do anymore.  I am using Toothsoap now, brushing 3+ times a day, I take extra vitamins usually, I plan to get a water pik soon. I also had been drinking 1 cup or less per day on average of very strong kefir, and I take Gr-8dopholis (tummy tuneup equivilent).

My dentist is not good at all. We have Medicaid, so my choices are nil with that. Wisconsin just doesnt have hardly any dentists at all for Medicaid patients. And its against the law to go to another dentist that does not accept Medicaid and pay cash.

Bumping this up. My gums are swelling more, and white pus pockets were coming out of the area where he just pulled the tooth. Should I go to the ER and get more antibiotics? I was going to do the cinnamon bark thing, but I cant find any around here.

Herbs Girl, with as often as you have been on antibiotics in the last 3 years, it sounds like either you have developed antibiotic resistant bacteria or your 'bacterial' infections are in part fungal (yeast) infections. Most probably both things are happening at the same time- a combination antibiotic resistant bacterial / fungal infection. An antibiotic will seem to help at the beginning because some of the bacteria will respond to the antibiotic but the stronger bacteria will not so it will resurge & the fungus part will actually get worse because of the antibiotics.

As far as fighting/preventing infection GSE (grapefruit seed extract) is supposed to be effective against even the REALLY nasty, Vancomycin resistant bacteria. (Vancomycin is Drs. last ditch, most potent antibiotic.) It is also a VERY potent anti fungal. You could take frequent doses & also use it as a mouth rinse. ALWAYS DILUTE GSE before using in the mouth.

Another advantage is that it is very inexpensive & NutriBiotic's brand is easy to get, most HFS carry it. A 2 oz bottle of NutriBiotic's GSE only costs about $10 & contains 200 10 drop doses.  Cheesy

Check this link for NutriBiotic's GSE (standard brand at health food stores) usage instructions.  If you have Beeyoutiful's GSE keep in mind that it is almost twice as strong as Nutribiotic's & adjust the doseage.

Help please!  I think my 15 mo dd has a gum infection or possibly impacted front teeth?  I'm not sure, but have noticed the last several days/week unusually bad breath, with an abnormal smell, so tonight my dh and I checked her mouth and her gums above her f top teeth were an unhealthy red and are very tender.  Above one tooth the gum seems to have receeded somewhat.  I would say her teeth are about halfway "grown", if that makes sense.  About 2 weeks ago I know that she fell/tripped b/c she was crying and had some blood in her mouth, but then I hadn't really thought anything about it anymore, or her fussiness the last couple weeks b/c she also has been cutting 4 molars.  I think that most of her fussiness has actually been from these top teeth/gumline.  I don't know if her teeth got pushed up into her gums and this has caused and infection, or what.  There may not be an infection at all, but I suspect it b/c of the bad breath and the color of red.  I plan to make a dr.'s appt. tomorrow if I can, but the only thing I can really see the dr. doing is prescribing an antibiotic, which I'd rather not do, as she's never had an a.b. before and I'd rather not start now.  I also plan to call our local hfs to see what the guy there says (very knowledgable) but was wondering if anyone here has had any experience like this with very small children.  I just don't want to take a chance with her teeth/gums by letting go any longer.
Thanks!

Thanks so much herbalmom. I did end of going to the ER last night, and he said it was "just inflamed". Although I did not agree with him at all, He did give me a script for Erythmroycin in case I need it. I think I will start on some GSE. Have you taken the large doses before, for serious infections? I need to keep up with the kefir and probiotics with all these antibiotics and GSE. How many hours between GSE and kefir, does anybody know?

We just got back from the dentist with my 5 year old dd.  She has an abcess....unusual that it is in the same spot they put a teeny tiny filling in between her teeth...but it has nothing to do with that of course  Roll Eyes  So they have her on antibiotics 125 mg 3x/day, I have been putting colloidal silver & clove oil directly on her gum.  Additionally, lots of vitam. c, superkids vitamins 2x day, and GSE 3 drops 2/x day.  My question is when should I be giving her tummy tune-up?

My dd doesn't use a pacifier and has never been a thumbsucker, and the only thing I can think of that would cause this is falling and hitting her teeth up into her gums.  I feel so bad for her, cause they are really sensitive, and today they got bumped by big sister, and started bleeding.

Well I called today to make an appointment with the ped. but was recommended to go to a pediatric dentist instead.  The only appt. this week is for Thursday, so I have several days still.  I also talked to a guy at the hfs and he recommended colloidal silver, small doses, ever hour or 2, so I have been doing that all day for the infection.  I also asked about clove oil, and though the Young Living bottle says not for under 6 yo, he said he personally would use it for a small child and dilute it quite a bit in some water.  Anyone have any experience using clove with an young child (15 mo)?

I had thought there could have been a connection! How Ironic that both of our daughters hit there teeth/gums and had an infection!

I would definatly give immune boosting supplements. Collidial silver is ok. I would also give Oregon Grape Root or Goldenseal too. Herbs for kids has an Oregan Grape Root for kids 1 year and over. Alot of health food stores and such have herbs for kids brand.

Here is what it looks like...

1 oz lasted for about 5 days for my my smallest child (age 19 mos)

Also I have read that Clove oil is safe for babies. Herbs for kids has a Gum-o-mile Oil that is safe for babies/children. I dont have any personal expereince with it though

What about black walnut tincture.  It's a very potent antifungal and isn't it also reputed to make teeth stronger???

I just got some and kicked the tar out of a ringworm (fungal) infection that my son had.  He's only taken a little bit for 4 days and it's showed significant improvement.  I plan to get more and keep it around.

Well my dd's gum infection is almost completely gone.  Yeah!!  I started the colloidal silver on Monday, giving her 1 T. or so several times a day, and then starting Tues. or maybe Wed. I also used a dropper to put diluted GSE directly on her gums.  Between the two of them, it has cleared it up!  Her dentist appt. was on Thurs. and by then there had definitely been an improvement so I told the dentist what I'd been doing, and she was fine with that and said that only if it didn't clear up within a couple of weeks might it be necessary to use an antibiotic.  Plus, she said the teeth were not mobile at all, and that there was some new tissue growing between the teeth, so I'm not sure if something had pushed up her gums or what.  She also had some plaque on her teeth, and I was reminded to brush her teeth well at least once a day, even though my dd would probably scream and her gums would bleed, but that the bacteria can grow in the plaque, so it's really important to brush, which I am ashamed to say I hadn't been doing.  I am now, though  Grin  Anyways, I'm so thankful to the Lord that the colloidal silver and possibly the GSE has taken care of it!
BTW, she also mentioned, and said that this was controversial, but she said even breastmilk on the teeth overnight can cause plaque to grow, and that if I could I should try to brush her teeth after nursing at bedtime  Shocked or at least wipe them down with a washcloth (that was my idea to her)  However, I don't think that I will do this.

Glad to help. I have really bad teeth myself & know how hard it can be, not to mention painful.

Sorry it took me so long to answer this, I haven't been on WTM much lately & I missed it. Here is a post that will answer a lot of your questions:

BUMP for the probiotics & kefir question.

How are you doing now? Blessings ~herbalmom

Thanks for the link. By the time I got my GSE from iherb My tooth was feeling better. I did not take any more antibiotics. I am taking 1-2 cups Kefir a day + the NOW tummy tuneup equivilent to help restore beneficial bacteria.
Scince I started NOW Gr8dopholis (TT8) My psoriasis has almost gone. What  a wonderful side effect!!!!!!!!!   I was taking 3 a day, now Im down to 2

I may end up getting this  tooth pulled, I do not want to do anymore root canals  Unless I absolutely have too, especially if its on a back tooth, not a front one.  I have the GSE all ready in my cupboard now, in case I get more infection(s)

Thanks!

Have you tried oil pulling.  It is where you take a tablespoon of oil such as sesame seed oil (I use safflower oil) and swish it around in your mouth for 10-20 minutes.  It is supposed to pull the toxins out of your saliva and get rid of a whole bunch of problems.  There are several sights on the subject.  I do oil pulling just for my teeth and skin and it has made my teeth whiter. Anyways a lot of people on the sights said that it helped them get rid of all kinds of problems in their mouth.  Infections, abscessed tooth, tumors in the mouth among other things.  Hope this is some help

I have fillings in my mouth, and I read that oil pulling can cause them to fall out, is this true?

I'm not a specialist on this, however  I read that it is possible but very unlikley unless it is already messed up (the filling).  That it is pretty safe.  I have only been oil pulling a couple of weeks and I have a ton of fillings and haven't noticed anything with my fillings.  There is more information on the oil pulling sites.  That was just what I found.   Shocked
