  EYE INJURIES
« on: February 23, 2007, 07:42:35 AM » by healthyinOhio
My son shot himself in the eye, yesterday, with one of those Nerf guns.  It has those soft Nerf bullets, but the top of it has a sharp velcro "X" on it.  He had it closed all day, yesterday, which was fine for me.  I just figured his tears would help heal it.  But this morning it looks a little swollen and he still cannot open it, so I am a little worried.
I had a friend in high school who had a classmate fling a piece of paper into the air and cut her eye.  It got infected and she had to have a glass eye put in.  So, I am freaking out a bit.  What do you all think?  Thanks!

If it was our child we would take him to the eye Dr.  I would also make an eyebright and goldenseal tea and drip that in his eye.   Breastmilk also works very well for eye injuries.

I don't have any eyebright, so I am using some bilberry and goldenseal.  I know those are great for eye infections, but is a cut different?  Would the herbs affect the eye differently since it is an injury and not an infection?
Why do we moms always think of worst case scenarios in these kind of situations? LOL!
Oh, haven't had bre*st milk in FOREVER!!  Grin

I would go to the eye doc too.  They should be able to get him in quickly and find out very fast if there is anything to be concerned about.

I would go to the eye doc ASAP also.  My son got wacked in the eye with a branch a couple of weeks ago and it teared up and was causing a LOT of pain right after and it didn't subside, so we took him to ER right away.  He had a bad corneal abrasion (we had to take him to ER becuase it was on a Sunday).  They heal extremely quickly, but you want to be able to prevent infection with some antibiotic ointment.  If it gets infected and scars, it can cause vision problems.

Not to scare you...but I wouldn't want to mess around with eyes.

Actually I think I had mixed eye bright, billberry, and goldenseal pwd. and made a tea and used it for one of our children.  It wasn't for an eye injury though.  I'm assuming the bilberry  would be okay for an eye injury, maybe do some research on the herb first.
I have used breastmilk for an eye injury  and it healed the eye in a very short time!
I wonder if cows  milk or goats milk would have the same effect!   Huh

That's great.  I was shocked at how fast my son's /large/ abrasion healed completely in two days!!  It's amazing!  This is probably why your son is feeling better already.

Glad he's feeling better.

Hello Everyone-
This evening my son was doing farm chores and somehow banged himself in the eye with a stick.  His sister brought him to me in hysterics.  I made him get in the shower and let the water run on his eye but when he got out I could see the cornea somehow "bunched up"/scratched in the center of his eye--YUCK!!  I took him in to the eye dr and he has severe corneal abrasions all over his eye. The dr. showed me the pictures that he took under the eye microscope.  Jordan is now asleep.... with a patch and antibiotic medicine on his eye.  He is taking extra strength tylenol for pain.  Does anyone have any recommendations for any suppliments he should take (vit C? herbs?? etc??) I have heard that breast milk helps with eye infections so... I happen to be nursing my 18 month old... when the dr. removes the patch next week should I put breastmilk into his eye?? Has anyone ever heard of that or am I just crazy???  Any help would be appreciated!!!!!
the LORD bless you all,
Cynthia

Yeah, that is very common for parents who don't want antibiotic ointment put in their babies eyes at birth. You can use breastmilk, which has natural antibodies in it. You can also use antibiotic herbs such as echinachia or goldenseal. A very common eye herb is eyebright...people use this one on babies as well. You should go to bulkherbstore and look up each of these herbs to see which one or which combination you'd like to use. I think all you have to do is simmer the herbs in some water for several hours on low heat (not enough to burn the herbs) until you have about 1/3 of the original amount of water you started with left, then you strain the herbs out and let the solution cool. Then you can dip a cottonball in it and wash it over his eyes several times a day squeezing some of the herb water in the eye at the same time.

About a week ago my 7mo baby girl fell of the bed and hurt her eye.  I started giving her Arnica immediatly and the bruising was very minimal.  She showed no signs of a concussion either, but her eye is STILL swollen.  It doesn't appear to be terribly swollen, but her eyelid is still sagging and gives her the look of having a lazy eye.  Can someone help me?  It seems to show some improvement, but I have this horrible fear that she'll look liike this the rest of her life. Shocked  I'd really appreciate a suggestion.

would the eyebright solution work on an old injury with scarring?
DS scratched his eye 2 days before Christmas last year.  Diaganol and jagged.  every time he would open his eye it would pull the skin back.  Took him to the eye dr, who put a non corrective contact in for a few days (basically an eye bandaid). Ever since than his vision seems to have deteriated slightly and I can still see a scar on his eye.  Would the eyebright help it at all, and if so would I need to do anything else?  Should the eye bright be ingested or used as an eye wash?  TIA

I don't know about the eyebright, but billberry tea works internally or as an eyewash.

My 3 yo son stepped on a branch yesterday.  The branch was attached to the tree, it broke when he stepped on it and the part still on the tree smacked him right in the eye. It definitely scratched his cornea as far as I could see.  He couldn't open the eye but was able to be distracted until he woke up from a nap.  I called around to find some breast milk.  Dropped that in his eye and it obviously provided him with relief.
The accident happened around 4 pm.  Got the milk at 6 (he fell asleep right before we left).  He woke up when we got hone around 6:15 and was in total misery for 1 + hours.  He did feel better after I dropped in the breastmilk.  Put him to bed at 7:30 and he woke up this morning totally back to his normal happy self and just has red next to his tear duct.  The scratch that I saw yesterday- gone.  I am still putting the breastmilk in it today. Great stuff!!!  Thank the Lord.   Smiley

My hubby got injured pretty badly in the eye yesterday. they are waiting for it to heal some to see if he has any permanent damage. Almost the entire surface was scraped up and had to have the "skin" scraped off. I got him Billberry and Eyebright tonight to take internally but I don't think I will put it in his eye due to how bad it is. I'm wondering if any one know if a comfrey compress over the closed eye would help it heal faster and if healing faster is even safe. He can not work until it is healed at least some and if he looses vision it may be permanent. Comfrey is the only thing I can think of other than simply supporting his health (rest, D, C, E ect.)  and the billberry and eyebright.  ANY other suggestions would be GREAT!  THANKS!

I know that a warm tea bag will take down swelling.  Make a cup of black tea, then take out the bag when tea is comfortably warm, squeeze slightly and apply to closed eye for 10 minutes or so.  The tannins in the tea really do take down swelling, which should help with the healing.  You can dunk the bag back in the tea to warm it up and apply again.  HTH!

I don't know of any reason you can't use comfrey on it. It's what I would choose in a case like this. Cool, NOT cold compresses will help the swelling the most.

An eye injury is a SCARY thing! We have been through a few around here ourselves....
The first thing that came to my mind was silver! Silver actually helps to regenerate tissues, and that is why it is so successful in diabetic ulcers. Silver also helps to keep bacterial infections at bay, and clears up existing infections.

If this were me, I would not hesitate to use silver in the eye. I have used a few types of silver, but the only one that I trust in the eye is Nature's Sunshine Silver Shield. It is very effective, and does not sting at all. We have used it many, many times in our own eyes.

If you are leery about putting the silver directly in the eye at this point, I would soak an eyepad (special type of bandage available at WM) with the silver and place it directly over the eye. The silver even there will help the eye to heal and discourage any infection. Of course, I would recommend checking with your MD, but even he/she may not know how effective silver can be. It's just wonderful.

Praying for your hubby today.... Smiley

Well, the update is... Making improvements and they did not have to scrape anything else off his eye.
PTL! So now it is on the mend. Have been putting in the silver when I do his other drops. I'll be doing the comfrey when the kids are down and I can get it made. We go in again tomorrow to see how it is and they may take the contact bandage out if it is improved enough.  DR checked the iris today and from what he could see it didn't look damaged. He will check it again when it heals a bit more to be sure.  He is taking lots of billberry and eyebright as well. He will hopefully be going back to work on Monday.  Hubby says he gets quite a bit of relief after I put the arnica cream on. I have been putting it on his eye lids that are bruised and swollen.  I've learned a lot through this  Smiley for future use.  Hopefully it won't happen again! Hopefully everyone has learned to be more careful when tossing fire wood Smiley

Well, it has been over 2 weeks since the injury and so I thought I would post what we did and when so that it might help someone else in the future.  First I will say that we saw the top eye dr/surgeons in the state and the dr we saw has been practising for over 30 years and he said his eye injury was in the top 10.  He expected the retina to be damaged and was expecting a lot of vision loss.  Well, we were praying and God healed it amazing. His retina was fine and his eye sight is almost completely recovered and continues to improve.

If I had this happen and I didn't have the option of medical help I am confident I could treat it myself and prevent infection and help with the healing greatly. However if it happened again and I had medical help available I would indeed use it. That was the biggest debate, to go to the doctor or not. In this case I am glad we did.

SO first thing we did when he was injured was to use eye wash solution ( something all families should keep on hand). Whne I used this I saw "something" in his eye that looked like fuzz but wasn't moving at all when washed or when he blinked. This is when I decided to take him in. It ended up being an abrasion over 70% of his eye. By the time the dr had scraped all the roughed up "skin" from his eye it was at 90%.  They put in a protective contact and sent us home with antibiotic drops that we used.

I also dripped colloidal silver drops in his eyes 3-4 times a day. Then I used a comfrey leaf poultice on his eye several times a day. I tried to go for an hour or more. He usually fell asleep so we got more like 2 hours and he would go to sleep at night with it on there. With in a week the black eye was almost completely gone and in 10 days you wouldn't have even known he had gotten a big black eye. He also took LOTS of billberry. He is still taking the billberry.

I do think the #1 help in healing was rest and the comfrey. He would just about beg for the comfrey because he said it helped so much. The doc has been amazed at the healing of it, though he would never say it was the Lord or HERBS helping! Just "luck"  Tongue  So his sight continues to improve and we are so thankful. Hubby's comment to me one day was "there is one thing I don't need these eyes to see. That's the truth in God's word" !

Well, I hope this may help some one else down the road.

Sewbusy, thanks for the update. I had been wondering how your hubby was doing. Sounds like he is doing better than expected! PTL! Did you have fresh comfrey on hand or use dried?

only dried. I am not even sure how it would grow up here. And at the time it happened the only green things around were the resilient chickweed Grin I do plan to check into it over the winter and see if I can get some and grow it here:)
