Have you contacted your local health food store?  I used to order from breadbeckers until the shipping got to be way too much for our budget.  So I called our local health food store and asked if they did orders for customers.  So I ordered a 50 lb bag of wheat from them and they didn't charge me shipping since it came with their regular order.  Maybe that would work for you?  HTH

WLAJ-

Thanks for the suggestion.  I know our co-op does orders like that, but I think you have to be a member...something we haven't gotten to, yet.   Roll Eyes  I'll ask them--can't hurt!   Grin

P.S.  I think, actually, it's about time we become members!   Shocked

Okay, I must be stupider than I thought!  I compiled a list of web sites from this thread and another on WTM because a friend called me yesterday asking if I had a source for buying wheat, wheat germ, and oats in bulk.  I went to each site and was I ever lost!  How many types of wheat are there?  What is the best kind for making bread?

My friend had said that oats should be around $0.15 a lb.  Was that in a different decade?  www.Waltonfeed.com had oats for around $0.50 a lb. Is that good?  I really had trouble navigating the different sites.  I'm spoiled with Beeyoutiful's site which has a picture to show each product.  Wink Roll Eyes www.Breadbeckers.com and www.frankferd.com were particularly difficult.  www.Countrybaker.com had pictures and was helpful, but didn't have all that I needed to order.

Maybe part of my problem is I'm not sure exactly what I need to order Shocked. If any of you have ordered from different sites, could you share them with me? Oh, I might be interested in a co-op. I am located in the large metropolitan K.C. MO area.

I just ordered a bunch of stuff from www.bulkfoods.com. Cinnamon was on sale ( a 5lb bag.) Good quality....shipping $5 if order is over $70. Grain is organic.
Honeyville Grain is a good source but more $$, although shipping is included in price.
I've ordered from AzureFarms but their shipping was high.
(Walton Feed a great source but it takes a while and UPS really manahandles everything!)

Looking for a good source for bulk oats that are not wheat contaminated.  My son is gluten intolerant.  Thanks!

I was just on the "Walton Feed" site looking at grains...they do not have shipping fees very clearly marked.  Do they charge shipping?  How do you know how much?  I am trying to compare different sites, and they just had a handling charge, no shipping?
Anyone have experience ordering from them?
Thanks!

When I ordere with some friends last fall we had a nearly 1000 lb. order and the shipping came out to .34 a lb.  I was disappointed that the shipping was so high -  I am looking into another source to buy grain - when the shipping is that high it really adds to the cost of your grain.

You can check the delivery route for www.somethingbetternaturalfoods.com and see if they come close to where you live.  Tammy

did you ever try a local place that sells wheat seed to the farmers. I understand that they only spray the wheat before they plant it. I bought a bushel of wheat which is 60 lbs. for 13 dollars this fall.

Thanks to both of you, those are great ideas!

I am not in the delivery area (we just moved out of it Undecided ) but their prices are so good, shipping may not be that bad, I will check more into it!

We have several wheat farmers around here, so hopefully I will make a connection before too long with one of them, or I will check out the seed option!

Thanks!

we just moved to a BIG ranching area, biggest in the nation!  SO, there are feed and grain stores somewhere here I am sure.  I looked through this thread thinking the answers were already here, but I didn't see them...so here we go.

What do I need to know in picking grains in such a store?

What is the difference b/t cattle grade grains and wheat berries we use?

What about planting seed from a farm store- can we use that?

What are reasonable prices right now for wheat, oat groats, spelt, etc?

I have only been able to order from a HFS in the past, so this is all new territory for me...I'd appreciate any and all knowledge you can share!
thanks...milmuth   Grin

I'll answer the ones that I know from where I am here in SE MN.

I make certain I ask if the grain is treated in any way.  We only grind planting seed.  I have used feed oats, but usually just get seed oats at the same place I get seed wheat.

Sometimes they will have tested the protein in the seed wheat.  The greater the protein, the better for baking - but you can adapt to just about anything if you don't know for sure what it is.

I paid $11 per 50# bag of Glenn wheat and 12.95 per 1.5 bushel bag Buff oats on 2-28-09.

Wheat usually comes w/o the hull (chaff) on the seed but oats normally have a hull.  You will need to ask specifically if the oats you are getting are hull-less or you may end up with straw pieces in your granola.

What are "good numbers" on the protein level of wheat?  Is there a "lowest acceptable for making bread" number I should know?

still looking for a seed store around here...thanks for the info!

If the protein level is low, you can always add gluten, which is the wheat protein to compensate for a low wheat count.

I"m putting this here to hope that my research will help someone else.

I called a farm and feed store to ask about wheat.  The lady told me the following:
their grain is not certified and therefore not supposed to be for human consumption, mostly used for feeding birds, but some people buy it to grind for flour.
what is the difference, I asked?  well, this isn't treated- fewer if any pesticides!

what does "treated" mean for human wheat?  usually seed is sprayed before planting, then treated again after harvest to prevent spoilage, but with a different treatment than before planting so ok for people.

it is not organic

SO, animals don't get the chemicals but people do?  I know they use more treatment for our food for higher yields, but does that mean that the other is unfit for human consumption?

I thought animal grains were the leftovers, "junk" etc, at least it used to be unless you paid premium prices...

just thought I'd share my findings...stil trying to find a source of grain here.

I have made bread with 13.7 protein levels but the ones at 15 are better for a higher rise.

Hmmm... This last part (italics mine) sounds fishy to me.

Where I am, the seed is untreated the whole way through.  It regularly goes from purchase to plant to harvest to bagging for purchase w/o any treating at all if it's organic.  If it's not organic, the plant in the field may be sprayed in the process of spraying for weeds/pests - and that is before the seed head is on or matured.

I'm in SouthEast Minnesota and it may be weather conditions (humidity?) that makes the difference in seed treatment where you are.   Call me a skeptic, but I don't see how the need to spray a wheat seed could really be the case.  (If anyone from the South knows differently please let me know!)

Does anyone know where I can get Teff and Sorghum grains?  I can't get them through any local buying clubs that I have found or the HFS.

I've posted about Twin Valley Mills in NE as a source for sorghum...great deal:

http://www.twinvalleymills.com/pages/order.html

As of Jan. '08, 30 pounds of grain sold for $12.  Shipping was $19.24, equaling $31.24 for 30 pounds of grain.  It did go up a bit, a few dollars, perhaps, when I ordered this year.  Still great, and if you're closer than I am to NE, well, m/b it'll be cheaper.   Grin

I buy my grain from Wheat Montana also. I live in NC. They have a co/op and shipping is cheap. I like the white hard wheat for my sourdough bread.

I bought my wheat for the past several years from a group here in Denver.  Twice a year the group receives a shipment of Montana Wheat and the shipping is free.  A 50 pound bag of hard wheat is $21.50 which also includes tax.  It's a great deal, but I've never found it anywhere other than Denver.  They also have other heavy items for sale like oats, barley, beans, rice and most other types of grain (although not all types you could think of).

Walton Feed, based in Idaho, is a company that sells lots of grain.  In Texas and Oklahoma I found sources to access their grain.  Usually a large order was done twice a year.  In both places it was a small bread making/grain mill products business that did the order.  I haven't found anywhere in PA that I can do the same type of order.  However, you can contact Walton Feed and ask if there is a co-op or other organization that does these twice a year orders in your area.  I have been very happy with their grains, beans, etc.  You can get bags or sealed buckets or smaller cans.  Lots of variety available!
