Rebekah was kind enough to send me a shroom which I got right after Thanksgiving.    Wink  Although she did package it very well we had some damage to the package also (maybe that is a Minnesota thing)~~it was actually funny because when my daughter went to clean the post office the gal told her we had a package and it really smelled bad.    Cheesy  Cheesy  Cheesy

I could smell my Kombucha mushroom (cooking???) when I was several feet away from the mail box. It was a warm day.....and it had been sitting for several hours.
It still produced a nice tea and baby.

It would be a nice experiment with freezing one and trying it, but it will most likely kill it.  Freezing them only works in an industrialized, quick-freeze unit!  Crystallization of cells will occur in a slow freeze unit (like we all have...I THINK Huh) causing them to burst and cripple or kill the mushroom.  I have heard of people freezing them thinking it was ok, and then it never works.  Unless someone has another experience, that is what I have always heard!

I just harvested my second batch of kombucha.  My first batch I made 1 qt. & didn't really end up with a baby worth keeping.  This time I made 1 gallon.  I didn't have a gallon size jar so I used a large glass bowl.  I ended up with a kombucha "baby" the size of a 10" dinner plate!  Shocked  Cheesy  Guess I need to invest in some gallon size jars, huh?  Wink

I actually bought mine at Hobby Lobby. However, I have seen them at Target (in the kitchen supplies area) and have heard of people buying them at Walmart.

I am including a pic below (it was taken for a different purpose a couple of weeks ago----NO I don't include my Kombucha in the photoalbums  Wink)

...or you could buy pickles in a gallon jar.  Not too much, and my kids love pickles.  I think Walmart and Sam's have pickles in gallon jars.  The baby mushrooms will be whatever diameter the container is.

chopchop - how do you make peach kind?

I just used the Celestial Seasoning "Peach Ice" for the flavor.  Called Cool Brew Iced Tea.
Nothing to fancy, really.
But it is the first Kombucha that my dh really liked.  The rest he drinks, if he uses a straw because he doesn't like the way it smells.  Cheesy  LOL!  He claims it smells like a cross between  Epsom Salt and stinky feet.   Roll Eyes

abbilynn- sounds like you have the idea right.  Make sure that your tea is lukewarm and brew till you like the flavor.  7-14 days depending who you are.  Taste and experiment.  My kids will also drink it right away, but I think it is better when it is more fizzy.  The tighter you can close your container the better for max. fizz.  I want to get a bottle capper, in the meantime I am using cork and rubber corks for wine bottles with good success.  My kids drink about a cup a day, they would gladly drink more.  Smiley  HTH.

Can I please just confirm what one does with the mother when one doesn't want to make tea? Do I place it in some tea and stick it in the fridge or do I have to continue to feed it? Huh

You do not have to continue to feed it.  Just put it in the fridge with some tea.  It will last quite a long time in there.  Smiley

If it is excess mushrooms you're talking about, you can bury then in your garden or add  them to  your compost.  They help to increase soil health as well.   Grin
Otherwise, if you are leaving town or want a break from making the tea.  Put it in a glass bowl filled with sugar- tea - water ("growing tea ").  Cover it with a  white cotton towel and stick it in the refrigerator.  When you are ready to use it again, just make your tea like usual and add the mushroom.
Blessing's,

Anyone have an extra "mother" (or whatever it's called) they would sell?  Everyone around here looks at me like I'm nuts when I ask!  Just curious!

I put mine in a jar full of starter tea and let it sit(out of the fridge) until I'm ready to use it.  Sometimes mine sit for a month or more and the only thing I've noticed is that sometimes they get thicker and the starter gets more sour.

I have wanted a kombucha mother for a long time but couldn't find one anywhere without buying one (I had made a deal with my hubby I would only start this adventure if I was offered one for free Undecided).
I kinda gave up about a year ago cause I got so many strange looks or lectures about how dangerous the stuff was Sad.
Fast forward to 2 weeks ago.  We were invited to an Elder's home for lunch (gettin' checked out up close and personal Wink since we have been going to the church almost a year).  The wife and I started talking about making refried beans, I said I sprout mine first, she asked if I knew Nourishing Traditions and one thing led to another.  Next thing you know, I'm coming home with a kombucha mother of my very own Grin
I got on welltellme to fine tune my first attempt.  After 7 days, not much was happening.  So, I figured it was in a too cool cupboard.  After I moved it to a cupboard closer to the heater, I began to see action.  I harvested my first batch Christmas Eve, totally grossing out my sister-in-law Shocked, by the way.  I forgot to let it rest in tightly covered jars a week or two.  We started drinking it the next day (not s-i-l or her family though! Grin).  It is just lovely!!! Cheesy Smiley
I've already started a new batch.
I like caffine so I use 4 family size tea bags for 1 gallon of water and 1 cup sugar.  I probably could use 3 fs tea bags and just brew a little longer with the same results -- I'm impatient and just use lots of tea for a short time.

Anyway, thanks for all your help everyone!!! Kiss
By the way, if anyone needs a baby, I'd be happy to send you one if you just cover the shippping.
Speaking of which, how do you senders usually package your scoobie babies for shipping? Huh

hi,
I was considering ordering a mother from one of the posted sites. They are kind of pricey so I have a question. We will be moving in 5 months and then most likely driving cross country. Is it possible to safely transport a Kombucha mother in a vehicle with 4 kids. Shocked
Would y'all just wait and order one after the move? I don't know of anyone locally that I could sell it too when we move and quite frankly I'm not sure if I feel comfortable with any liability should someone get sick off one of my mothers(man that was a weird sentence). People in California love to sue.(no offense to any natives Grin)any thoughts? Leslie

Why not?  I think it would be ok.  As long as what you are keeping it in doesn't break so you have to smell vinegar the whole trip. Tongue

I recieved my mushroom today, and started my tea. I am excited to see how it will turn out. My mushroom was very nice and white looking, and I would highly recommend brinick12. She packaged it so well I was actually surprised, but I think someone on here has already recommended her.

I guess I am a little too excited (LOL), I should have explained myself a little better. I ordered my mushroom off of e-bay from brinick12. Just wanted to let anyone know that might be looking for one. I think with shipping and everything it costed $9.45.
After I made my black tea and mixed my sugar and things, I put 2 oolong and ginger tea bags in while it was cooling. I then took them out, and added my mushroom. I'm waiting to see how it will turn out.

I only have 1/2 gallon size jars. Can I cut a mother in half to split b/n 2 jars or should I just make a 1/2 gallon to start and then use two jars for the second batch? Where did y'all get gallon sized jars from?

I curious how the kombuchas are packaged for shipping.  I have 2 or 3 people interested in some when mine get reproducing but I'm just not sure how to send them. Huh

Could you describe what yours was shipped in and how it was packed?

Thanks! Smiley

I purchased mine from this gal and sent one out the same way. I put the mother and some k-tea in a ziploc baggie. Can't rememberer if that one got taped up. Then it went into another baggie and taped like crazy with clear packing tape. Next was a plastic grocery sack and more taping and finally in a small manila envelope. It cost less than $2 to mail.

Mine came in a small glass bottle (I think it was a single serving juice bottle from Quick Trip) along with starter tea (important).  The lid was taped around with clear packing tape and the bottle was in a box with peanuts.  The tape kept it from leaking quite well and the peanuts were sufficient to keep the glass jar from breaking.

I personally wouldn't recommend this as you are not supposed to put kombucha in plastic because the culture will try to detoxify the plastic and cause plastic toxins to be released into the tea.

I got mine originally in plastic bags all taped up too.  It's really hard to guarantee that over 2000 plus years the cultures have been around, that zero toxins have been exposed to the culture you get in some shape or form.  Being that mine were sent priority mail and I released the cultures from the packaging as soon as possible, I am comfortable with them being safe as they were not in plastic very long, and who knows where their mothers have been over the centuries, and I am not going to use plastic at all.  So, just food for thought  Smiley
