I have been diagnosed with low adrenals, and for the last two years have struggled terribly with it. I finally got to the point that I needed to feel better. I am young, and plan on having many more children, Lord willing!  My last pregnancy was rough with almost miscariage at 14 weeks, then preterm labor at 27 weeks. No reason whatsoever, except I wasn't strong enough to handle the pregnancy. My baby is now one year old, and 20 days ago I started taking Cortef.  Already, in just 20 days I feel so much better. My Dr. plans are just to have me on it for 3 months, and wean off of it. I'm only on 7 1/2 mg. of it, which is very low. On something like this, I do agree with the person that wrote above, if the herbs are not working, do go see a Dr. I tried many different herbs and glandulars. I tried Isocort even, and it just didn't help.  I hope that helps!

Thank you everyone for all your advice.  I have only tried 1 or 2 of the herbs that you have listed, but maybe if I try some of them together, or all and maybe I will have better results.  I will definitely look into getting the Isocort.  And Caroline, I will look into the cortef if I find that these do not work.  As I need to do something.  I am sick and tired of being tired!  Sad

Thank you again.

I know that this thread is old, but I have been doing some research on the adrenal glands, pituitary, hypothalamus, and hormones.  I have found two links with all natural supplements.  One is a pill and the other is a tincture:

I have read through this thread and haven't seen an answer to my question.  Do any of you know any natural helps for exhausted adrenal glands that are safe to use while pregnant/nursing?  I am almolst 10 weeks pregnant and still nursing my almost 2 year old.  I was told over 2 years ago that my adrenals were exhausted and took 31 pills for quite some time from a natural doctor I saw at that time.  When I became pregnant with my now 2 year old, they said I couldn't take any of the supplements that I had been taking, so I went off all of them cold turkey.  That was 2 years ago and I know I have probably only gotten worse.  I was producing very little cortisol at that time.  I have also been reading the inflammation thread because I have issues with that, which are also symptoms of the exhausted thyroid.  While I am trying to control the inflammation with diet, juices (cherry, blueberry, pomegranate), I would love to nurture my thyroid glands to try to take care of the root of the problem.  Any advice/insight would be greatly appreciated.  I deal with chronic pain and am SO wanting to feel good again.

oops....I meant I'm trying to nurture my adrenal glands, not thyroid....sorry         Also, I was taking 31 total pills each day, not 31 different supplements a day, just to clarify.  I think I better start proofreading my posts!   Roll Eyes

I am still nursing and my ND just put me on an adrenal supplement  My pressure (top number)fell from 100 to 94 when I got up.  It says it is from Allergy Research group. It is just called Adrenal.  And says Organic Glandular.  I did buy it from her.  so I don't know where else you might get it.  Says it has 300 mg of Bovine Adrenal tissue.  mm yummy. Smiley  oh, here is a website www.allergyresearchgroup.com.  HTH some maybe.

Well....I've been right where you are about three times.  I don't think thyroid has been as much of an issue with me, but adrenals sure have, along with chronic back pain (which I found out can be connected to adrenals).  The thing about the glandular system is that (at least it seems to me) whenever one of 'em exhausts, the others can go out of wack some too.

I so understand being tired and wanting to get out of it.

I am much improved now, although it took time and I had to stop nursing with #9 baby at 6 weeks.  I'll give you a short idea of what is working, and maybe something out of it might help you.  I do not think any of the supplements I recommend would be outlawed in pregnancy.

1.  Whole food diet.  No chemicals, preservatives, sugar, white flour, or fats that are not butter, olive oil, or coconut oil.  I eat real simply, and I have to go light on carbs due to insulin resistance.   For pregnancy, meat 1-2 times per day and eggs in the morning.

2.  T-tapp is really helping with strength.  I only do the 15 minute Basic Workout Plus.  But, my adrenals are better.  So, if I was in adrenal fatigue/exhaustion I would probably only do the BWO, and only every other or every two days.  I'd do only what I could, but I'd try to do it because it is safe for pregnancy and you can do it right in your living room.

3.  I use the food supplements from Standard Process.  The one called Drenamin has a lot of extracts in it, adrenal being one of them.  I cannot take this at the evening meal, so I take three at breakfast and two at lunch.  They recommend what to take for pregnancy.  What I take right now alongside Drenamin:  Cataplex B, Catalyn (multi), MinTran, and one Ferrofood (iron) only once a day.  If I was pregnant I would take one at breakfast and one at lunch.  I might would switch to Flouradix (the liquid iron supplement) at the end of pregnancy when blood volume is high.

For pregnancy I believe they recommend Calcium Lactate (calcium), Folic Acid B12, Catalyn, Chlorophyll Pearls.  I personally (if I get pregnant) would keep to what I do and pick up Calcium Lactate and the Folic Acid.  I might take chlorophyll from the health food store.  I believe Standard Process can be gotten over the Internet.  It used to only be prescribed by natural docs and chiros, but that is not the case now.

4. Sleep.  For me, that is 7 hours at night and 30 mins during the day.  If pregnant, the nap would probably be a bit longer.  If the children cried at night (pregnant) my husband would get up to attend to them.  Adrenals and sleep are VERY connected and my husband and I take that very seriously because I've had complete fatigue a few times and we don't want that to happen anymore.

None of this may help you, but anyway, I pray for God's wisdom for you (James 1) as you go through this time.

Blessings,
Cara

I know this was posted awhile ago but hopefully you'll catch this while it's up.  My NP put me on cortef about 6 wks ago and he prescribed 5mg tablets up to 4 times a day.  I have been leery of taking it though b/c I've read that cortisone can stimulate candida to flourish.  Since I'm already having so many issues with this, I didn't really want to aggravate it.  BUT I've also read that if low adrenals are effecting your immune system then you can't fight yeast at all and that's probably why I can't kick it.  I also have hypothyroid and low body temps, which I believe the cortisone is also supposed to help.  Anyway, I've not been experiencing any great relief since starting this, but I've only been taking 5 mg a day.  It does make my heart beat "harder?". And my blood pressure went from 80 over 50 to 100 over 60.  But no improvement in any other symptoms.  My question is how were your results over the 3 mos?  Did it help you over the long run or no tremendous improvement?  Thanks in advance. First, all the suggestions in the post a few up are excellent.  For me, it was diet as stated above, T-tapp, sleep and I take Isocort.  I would not recommend taking cortef.  It is dangerous IMO and has long term consequences.  It is a steroid.  I would recommend taking Isocort because it is raw adrenal extract from cows.  I've been doing very well on it.  I started out taking two pellets three times a day.  I am now down to two in the AM and still doing very well.  It has taken me two years to crawl back to a semi-normal state.  But definately, get rid of the cortef.  Not a good thing.  You can buy Isocort online for $25 a bottle.

Hello, hodgy,

Crazy question but did you ever pursue the Lyme disease thing?  The only reason I ask is that IF one has Lyme disease, a steroid is the LAST THING one would wish to be taking!  If cortef is a steroid, it would hurt and not help the Lyme-ridden individual. Lyme is "the great imitator" of many other diseases.  A friend of mine was falsely diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and damaged greatly by steroid treatment.

Just a thought. If it turns out that the info is not relevant to your situation, maybe it'll end up helping some other reader.   Smiley

Amy Joy

Well,  funny you should ask, I have an appointment this week and that's going to be my topic of discussion!  I thought maybe that was why I might not be responding very well to the cortef.  I had a lot more crazy aches and wild pains while taking it.  I'm also doing IV EDTA chelation, so I thought maybe it was a detox reaction to that(heavy metal removal), but now, since I've stopped the cortef, the pains  have mostly subsided.  Do you happen to know very much about the subject of testing for chronic lyme?  I don't want to jump off topic too much here, but what I've researched about it claims it's a very controversial subject, and if you get diagnosed, you are just real lucky.   I watched an episode of Mystery Diagnosis on The learning channel the other night and this guy had EVERY ONE OF MY SYMPTOMS.  I was so tired, but I kept one eye open to find out what he had at the very end...chronic lyme disease!  My mom called me the next morning and said"I was watching this show last night..." Cheesy

Anyway, I do believe you all are right about the cortef and am grateful for the opinions on the matter.  And I'm definitely finding out about the Lyme disease  this Thursday.  Do you happen to know if other critters can carry Lyme?  I only ask b/c alot of these things going on occurred after my family acquired LICE from my daughter's daycare when she was 3 yo.  I quite working full time and pulled her out of daycare as a result.  But I do remember having some and being bit, and the bites were incredibly sore.  I'm talking major headache and tenderness.  I remember feeling very sorry for my daughter for I had no idea lice bites hurt so bad!  Maybe they were infested with lyme bacteria?  Just a thought.  At the time  that's when I started just discovering "naturals"  and thought maybe the stress of the whole thing wiped out my adrenals.  Thanks for the advice,( hope you get some rest, I noticed your reply at 4:30 am!) Thanks Patti, I've been wanting to do the T-tapp I've read so much about here, but was afraid because sometimes exercise does make me so wiped-out.  But I'm just waiting for the 3rd Tuesday of the mo sale to get started.  I also tried the Isocort, but didn't feel much improvement myself on it, but maybe I didn't give it enough time.  I'll dig the bottle back out!  Cheesy Thanks for the advice.

Thanks so much for this information.  I have just a couple more questions you might be able to help with.  Does the "blot" test catch it if it has turned what I believe they call "in cyst."  And do you mean other infectious parasite/bacteria type things in addition to the Lyme's from the initial bite.  (As opposed to weakened immune system and unable to fight offenders after the Lyme is aqcuired.)

And as far as the adrenals go, I think I have classic adrenal fatigue issues according to what I've read.

I believe God has answered  prayer by sending knowlegable people on this web site.  I pray he continues to bless me with a doctor that can get to the bottom of this, and the strength to continue til then. Smiley

I have had ADRENAL PROBLEMS for the last 3 years.  I have taken Cortef at times and other supplements as well.   May main complaint is LBP which gives me fatigue and some dizziness.  I also have aches and pains (inflamation) and some hormones that are off.   I have dealt w/ candida over the past year and that has helped my health so very much.
I just wanted to share w/ you all the key ingredient to dealing w/ adrenal issues and low blood pressure (LBP).     SALT!   SALT!    SALT!
There is a book mentioned in this posting  called something like the 21st century and adrenal crisis.   That book is so good.
When you have low adrenals and LBP your body needs more salt!!
Salt will help your adrenals to heal and will raise your BP!
If you have a bp cuff at home do an experiment.   Take 1/2 tsp. of salt in a glass of water.  Take your BP before and then 20 min. after the water.
You will literally see your BP clime and will feel better too.
The author of the book recommends 1st thing in the morning to have some salt water and a little licorice tincture.
From my experience I have found this to help so much.   Just thought I would share that.   I would still recommend that you take some supplements to heal your adrenals and watch the diet too.   JJ

I agree that the salt water is like an instant cure when I am feeling out of it.  With my FIL's recent heart attack I have been a little more paranoid about this however, do you think the salt is making the heart work too hard?  I am torn now.  I start to think that maybe I should feel lucky to have lbp rather than high.  Have you done a lot of research on this?

That is encouraging because I LOVE salt.  My dad used to give us salt off of the cattle salt blocks--- yummm!
My poor mom has lbp too and at one point my dad thought no salt was more healthy.  My mom lost a LOT of weight (she couldn't afford to) because everything was so unnappetizing w/o salt.  He had to give up on that one so she wouldn't starve to death.  Cheesy
I still want to do more research on adding more salt to my diet when I already have a lot. ie. should I have a 1/2 tsp in water everyday or only now and then.  Maybe if I start swelling up it means I have enough??

You must you air-dried sea salt preferably from the Mediterranean or Hawaii.  Regular table salt is deadly.  Dr. Bob Marshall talks about adrenal fatigue a lot and says you must get 1/2 t. good sea salt a day plus 5 straight hours of sleep plus lots of good water.  Sea salt also helps produce HCL (stomach acid) which is extremely important to feeling well.  His stuff is SO good.  I have been sick for 18 years and have never tried products and recommendations that have worked like his.

1. I use Celtic Sea Salt.
2.  The research I've done is by reading.  Nourishing Traditions pg 48 tells how the need for salt vaies from persons.  quote- people w/ weak adrenal glands lose salt in their urine and must have plentiful salt in their diet. NT has a big discussion on salt on that page.   From what I've read if you get too much salt then yes you would have high BP or water retention.    I don't think I will ever need to worry about that!!
3.  I really second the using a healthy salt.  I've read that if you use a healthy salt it will not have a negative effect on the body.
4.   Did any of yous ever try drinking alot of water w/out the salt??   Before I KNEW BETTER I had tried that.  Suffice it to say I had some very slow weak feeling days.    live to learn you know!

Yes, yes!!! This is an EXCELLENT book!! Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome . I think this is the same book that you are talking about. The author is James Wilson.

I have the book personally, and it lists several things you can do for yourself for adrenal fatigue. My brother suffered with severe adrenal fatigue, and for him, the most helpful supplement was B-5 or pantothenic acid. He said he can't believe the difference in how he feels. Even his ND failed to recommend B-5, but after my brother read the book, put himself on B-5 and noticed the 100% improvement, he is sold on pantothenic acid!!

Yes, he is doing the salt, too, but it wasn't enough. His diet is already very good and he is a mason, outside exercising constantly in the heat, so lack of exercise wasn't a concern, either. Just mainly stress in his life.

I tried B5 before for acne and it seemed to help, but I got the WORSE gas and wierd poop reaction to it.  Do you know if this happens to your brother? I wonder if it was the kind I was taking or even the dosage.  It was bad  Tongue

Just wondering how much cortef you have taken and was it helpful for you?  I have a prescription but I'm so paranoid of aggravating the candida with it.  I DO feel warmer when I take it, almost like it's helping my thyroid meds work better.  But I'm afraid it will weaken my immunity.  I've read varying reports, some say yes it will aggravate and worsen immunity.  Then some say, at the right dosage, it will improve immunity, and help fight off yeast!   (I like hearing others experiences.) Smiley  I also CRAVE salt like crazy when I'm having a bad spell, but I have to make sure to take extra potassium b/c it feels like that gets pulled out when I use too much sea salt.  Seems like my ankles and calves swell at times and I can't stand that. I am getting really discouraged.  I went off of the Standard Process supplement Drenamin for like two weeks, and my adrenals bottomed out pronto.  Even on Drenamin and a healthy diet with B vitamins I have not been able to exercise.  (I was the one that recommended the t-tapp because 4myhoonie had recommended it to me) and I can't do that, walk a mile, or get hot and sweat at all without going into stress.

I'm scared of Isocourt, but I am getting really tired of having to scale my life down to where I can at least take care of my little children and fix dinner.  Oh, I did get my kids homeschooled yesterday by sitting in the living room so that my back didn't hurt from the hard dining room chairs. Roll Eyes  Without Drenamin, this is all that I can do.

With Drenamin, I can do a little more physically, but I can't exercise.  If I exercise, I pull my back out all over the place and end up spending another $65 for my chiro to put it back in place.

Okay, so now that I've complained for a while, my questions:  If I were to try Isocourt, could I go off of it later?  Would it possibly cause more weakness in the adrenals because they would become dependent on it?

Thanks for any thoughts.  And just in case ya'll wonder, I am thankful most of the time.  It's just that yesterday was a really hard adrenal day, today is the same, and I start to get down because I always get hopeful that my adrenals will just pop up and be better (I mean, I'm not even pregnant or nursing right now!!).  Evidently that will not be the case for who knows how long. Hi Cara-- I will pray for you today.
I am speaking totally off the cuff here, but have you tried some sort of fast to help your body regroup?  I was reading on the "fasting with kefir" thread and the fast that the Russian women do sounded very doable.
You could even modify it.  Have you tried taking astralagus?
I am not very educated on this but I have read so many wonderful things about fasting, not to mention our strengthened fellowhip with the Lord.  May you trust in Him for what He has for you today.

Thank you InEverything,

I have thought about a fast.  More particularly, a raw fruit/veggie juice diet.  I don't know, but I'm thinking my body is too stressed out at this point for such a measure.  I would have to go to bed for the length of any fast, and also I would not be able to do a juice diet due to insulin resistance.  I'm not sure about a raw kefir fast as far as the sugars are concerned.  I've also read (I think on rawmilk.org) that there has been some success with a raw milk diet.

Thank you for prayers,
Cara

Cara- here is the link to the Kefir fast.  With the nutrient rich soup there may be enough to keep your strength up.

Just jane,

I've got NT, and I've thought just today of the Bieler Broth.  Have you had success with it?  And what is your opinion of Isocourt--not to mess with it unless absolutely necessary?

Thank you,
Cara

I used a soup recipe for quite awhile, it was similar to the first one, lots organic chicken broth, and high sodium veggies.  It was part of the diet I was on at the time for intestinal and yeast problems.  I believe that it was good for my health. (Should go back on the diet)   As far as Isocort.  I don't know much about it.
Have you had any saliva test done for adrenals?   You can order your own test kit from    ZRT LABORATORY  #503-466-2445 or salivatest.com
IMO if you are really sick with this, then get tested and do something about it even if it takes being on med for awhile.  You need to be there for your family.   God  wants you to take care of the children that you have.  Sometimes we need meds to get ahold of the problem.  God Bless you I know that when we have this problem we need somebody to tell us what to do because when our adrenals get low we cannot hardly make a decision.  justjane

Thank you again, just jane.

I have heard of saliva testing, but hadn't gotten around to doing it.

I would like to bug you one more time.  What is the diet you are talking about?  Is it from a book?  I have wondered about a possible yeast connection and wouldn't mind accomplishing two things at once.

Thank you again,
Cara
