  Pleurisy????
« on: April 25, 2007, 10:42:11 AM » by joyofthelord
My dh has had on and off pain in his chest and shoulder, hurts sometimes to breath.  We are pretty sure it is pleurisy.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  What would be a natural remedy to help him?  When I read about it it says it is an inflammation around the lung?  So would I try some herbs or something for inflammation or try some for viral infection?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My mom claims she had pleurisy as a young adult, but she doesn't remember exactly when.
Anyway, just a couple of months ago, she was having extreme pain in her chest, and thought maybe the pleurisy was back. She did not have it diagnosed, so we can't say for sure that it was pleurisy.
She called me for a remedy and the only thing I could think of was GOOT. So she made a batch, applied it to her painful chest areas, and within one day, she was feeling much better!!

This would be my only suggestion to you. Make a batch of GOOT and apply liberally. Maybe somebody else on here has experience with pleurisy firsthand. Anyway, hope this helps you!!

God Bless,
Mama Sita

Thank you.  I have tried this, but maybe I need to do it longer for him.  It comes and goes, so you don't know if it did the job or not.  I was wondering if anything internally should be taken for it ( an Herb)

Sorry, joyofthelord,
I did not come across pleurisy in any of my books. Maybe you can do an online search?
Do you have a reliable chiropractor? Maybe all your DH needs is an adjustment. Just a thought here.

Hope you find some relief for your DH.

I had pleurisy when my daughter was about a year old(8 years ago).  It went away on it's own with antibiotics, as I was not into natural healing then.  I would give mustard and onion packs with mullein and or garlic to loosen the mucous and take natural anti-inflammatories for the pleurisy, itself.  Tumeric, bromelain(from pineapple), aloe vera juice are great for that. HTH.

what is a mustard and onion pack - how do I do that?  Also - doesn't the Jungle Juice have something in it for anti-inflammatory?  He just started taking that.  I'm very new to this, but I am sure that natural is the route I want to take.

Oops, sorry, just found this, again.

ONION PACK:

Peel an onion and grate it into a cloth(about 1/2-1 cups worth) and fold cloth in half.  Place sealed cloth in some warm water and slightly wring out.  Place on chest for a few hours or overnight.

MUSTARD PACK:

*Use vasoline on skin before applying this*

Mix 10 TB of flour and 1 TBSP dry mustard.  Mix with water until you get a paste.  Apply to chest and leave on for about 15 min. or until it gets pink.
HTH!  Wink

Hi, JoyoftheLord!  I have had plenty of personal experience with pleurisy, unfortunately  Undecided.  My best recommendation: take 4 mullein capsules at the first sign, then two every hour till the pain goes away.  Works better than any anti-inflammatories, prescription or OTC.  That is all I ever use, and seems to be all I need.

The first time I had it, I didn't know what it was and thought it would go away eventually.  It just got worse, and I ended up with it in both lungs, could only take shallow breaths, couldn't lie down (it hurt worse if I did), and was sore to the touch in the area where it had first started.  Went to the doctor and he gave me anti-inflammatories (I didn't know better then), but told me all the pain wouldn't go away for 3 or 4 days, and he was right.  He also told me that I would likely have it again (oh, fun! Tongue), and that when I felt it coming on I should take 4 Advil every four hours till it was gone.  The next attack was just a few weeks later, and I took the Advil as suggested.  The pain subsided within a day, but when I quit taking it, it came back the next day.  I had to take it for 2 1/2 days before the pain did not return.

Shortly after that I came to realize I had an overgrowth of candida in my system (wonder why?! Roll Eyes), and changed my diet accordingly.  I also swore off antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.  My pleurisy attacks were greatly reduced after that, but when they did come I took the mullein and usually that took care of it in a matter of hours!

I don't see any reason tea wouldn't work, though I confess I have not tried it that way.  The brand I purchase is Solaray, and I get it at the health food store.  For a while, we only had one health food store in this area of the state and it was about 20 miles away from us.  But they are usually well-stocked in everything, and I do mean everything, so it was worth the trip.  Then a new one opened much nearer (about 5 miles away), but they didn't carry mullein until I asked them to.  The will order just about anything I ask for and keep it stocked for me. Smiley Smiley Smiley  Mullein is for anything having to do with the lungs.  When my dd had bronchitis and the stuff the doctor gave her didn't seem to help at all, I tried giving her my mullein (opened a capsule and mixed the contents up in applesauce).  I gave her three doses the first day we tried it. She cleared up completely by the second day.  It was amazing!

Mercy - I have to count on ordering anything from where I live.  I was just wondering - does the Solaray brand only have the mullein in it?  This is about all I can find.  Can you check it out, it has lots of other stuff too (don't know if that's good or bad)

The Solaray mullein is just mullein and gelatin (the capsule).  That's all.  I checked out the brand you are looking at, and I know that licorice & wild cherry bark would also be good for the lungs, especially if you were trying to break up phlegm.  Cinnamon, and ginger are both good for you too, but I am not at all familiar with the other ingredients.  Since they are listed in the order of volume percentage(what comes first in the list is the major indgredient, and the remaining ingredients are listed in order of how much there is in the product, greatest to least), and I don't know anything about the first two ingredients, I don't know how confident I would be with that.  For what you are taking it for, the more mullein the better, I would think.

1st ingrediant
Platycodon Root
http://www.tcmtreatment.com/herbs/0-jugeng.htm

2nd Ingrediant
Ophiopogon Rhizome
http://www.answers.com/topic/ophiopogon
Both of these look to be expectorants, and anti - inflammatory.
I would go for it, this looks good for the application you suggest.

I had pleurisy back in high school and I remember being in so much pain that I was in tears . My younger sister got when she was pregnant with my youngest neice about four years ago. So you can imagine how she felt! About seven months along, temps at around 90 degrees and a case of pleurisy! Angry

I found a website that gives a very detailed description of pleurisy and what we can do for it. The site is http://www.herbs2000.com/disorders/pleurisy.htm

I hope this helps your son to feel better.
