  Sleeping Pills -- Ambien
« on: April 26, 2007, 11:42:11 PM » by mexmarr
So far I have gotten out of taking any meds that are not specifically used for stopping/postponing labor.  I am offered a number of things on a regular basis, pain meds, stool softener, sleeping pills.

I can tolerate the pain, I get prune juice as needed (I have to give specifics on my bowel's activity, so I make sure I am going well.)  The problem is the sleeping pill, Ambien....  They make it sound good, with no problems, and I don't have much excuse since I am so tired because I am so tired all the time.  I just have the hardest time going to sleep without my dh.  I am not getting enough sleep, and it is getting harder to refuse.

Does anybody know of potential problems.  I have told them that I don't want any drugs that I don't need for Elizabeth's sake.  But the longer  go half sleep deprived, the more I wonder if it might be worthwhile to just take it a night or two.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I don't know a whole lot about sleeping meds but I do know that ambien is mild compared to a lot of things. I use to work for teens with emotional problems and they all took things to help them sleep. Very strong narcotics, very few had a use for ambien.
I don't know what it would do for Elizabeth but I can't help but think that if you got some rest and reduced your stress level, that it might be beneficial to do. As long as you make it clear that you want to take it on a day to day basis. Who knows, one night of good rest might make it easier to rest daily. I know if I have been sleep deprived for awhile, I have a difficult time getting to sleep when I can.

I just read the above sentence.  I told you I was tired. Embarrassed  Not quite the way I meant to word it! Lol.

Have you considered sleeping on his pillow?  You sleep on pillow A and he's on pillow B.  Switch as often as possible to keep it 'like him'.  Know what I mean?  Around here, I can tell which pillow is his just by laying on it - it smells like The Man.  And when I'm in the hospital, I fill the sides of the bed around me with a rolled blanket or a couple pillows along my back so it doesn't feel so empty.  Alright, I think that's enough personal wierdness revelation for this morning...

That would be a great idea, if I had a way to get some here at the hospital.

Any suggestions?  My dh might be able to get something, if I told him exactly what I wanted.

I have sleep issues! Have tried just about everything....including herbs and herbal teas and herbal tinctures. At the heart of it are issues with stress and perhaps not allowing the Lord to be Lord of my life and my troubles!! That being said, I found ( borrowed) Ambien to be a wonderful sleep aid ... having to see a Dr. to get it and then to have to pay for it were prohibitive. Benedryl also works to put me to sleep...but didn't STAY asleep and found myself having to take more than one. Good old fashioned Sominex works great when you desperately just need some serious shut eye and no grogginess in the a.m. Its cheap too. I am not crazy about the color blue ( we don't do food colorings here) but when you are desperate for sleep you compromise. I have always been an early-to-bed/early-to-rise person so sometimes just staying up an extra hour will help. Reading before bed also helps to calm. Upping the level of daily excercise helps. (Overall physical well-being including diet and vitamins makes a difference.)
Deep in my heart I feel the issue is a spiritual one. If The Lord woke me up maybe there was something He was trying to tell me I was not hearing? If I am so troubled I can't sleep what am I NOT hearing, listening to, applying to my life that is preventing me from having peace?
I go through periods where I don't need anything.....and periods where it seems nothing works. I keep the Sominex in the drawer and if I need to buy more I know I've got a problem I better get on my knees about.

That's not weird at all.  Hubby once had to go out of town for 3 months.  I had him wear a certain shirt for a couple of nights before he left.  I then took this shirt and put it on my body pillow for snuggling.  Smell has a very strong effect on the brain especially on women.

So...the moral of this story is, if you're weird, I guess, so am I.   Grin Roll Eyes

As far as herbs go, catnip and valerian root work wonders, but I don't know their safety during pregnancy.  Chamomile is supposed to help you relax and sleep as well.  I can't tell you from personal experience because I'm allergic to it.  The smell of lavender is also supposed to relax and cause sleepiness.

No you aren't wierd.  I sleep with one of my hubby's shirts too when he is out of town.  It's comforting.
I'm hijacking  a thread a little here.  HB have you tried chamomile since you got healthy?  My dh was allergic to several things before doing the MC that he is not allergic to anymore.
I had trouble sleeping towards the end of my pregnancy.  I think my problem was related to the ammount of healthy fat I was getting.  When I started taking the omega 3 6 9 from beeyoutiful, I began sleeping much better.

I second the pillow idea.  If hubby is away I put his pillow lengthways down the bed and sometimes add a big teddybear or something.  Othertimes my oldest DD will climb into bed and that works too.  My brain simply registers that somebody/thing else is in the big bed next to me and is happy.

Hi,
Been where you are a time or two to say the least.  The problem with the stools can also be solved by eating a little shredded wheat daily.  It helps with runny stools also.
FOR THE SLEEP -  Ambien CR is better.  It is not addictive, and it has a time release effect that will help you to STAY asleep.  Regular ambien cannot have a refill.  Ambien CR is allowed refills.  Regular ambien should be used for about 10 days then off of it 3 days.  To allow your body to rid it self of the tolarance that it has built up to the drug.
I have not had sleep problems in a while, but it can be miserable when you do.  I did not realize how worn out I was (with my last baby) till I stepped out in front of a car at Walmart one day.  I didn't remember anything until they honked and screeched to a halt.
Babies that are a least a year old can be allowed to take valerian.  This is in most sleep tinctures.  SEE BULKHERBSTORE.COM for their Sweet Sleep Tincture one is with valerian and one is without.  My children have taken this (and mom and dad) with excellent results.
I had a friend whose huband was in Iraq and my aunt who had a son in Iraq.  They both had trouble sleeping.  I made some sweet sleep tincture for them.  They said that it helped alot.  My aunt said that if she woke up she just took more then, and still woke up without feeling drowsy.
If you are not into making your own tincture, you can buy valerian root extract in a dropper bottle at most health food places.  It works well too.
Benedryl will work with babies too. My fourth child had horrible ear trouble.  I had tubes put in.  He was well but used to being up all night. Thus he kept me up.  The Dr. told me to give him benedryl before bed every night, and by the time that we would finish the bottle, he would be used to sleeping all night.  It worked.
I don't know your situation, but I have been battling cancer for 2 years, and I know about PAIN and Sleep Problems.

My sister has had so much trouble sleeping that she finally went to the dr. to get some sleeping pills. She only uses them two nights a week, maybe three. I'm thinking about buying her some of Shoshanna's sleep tinctures do think these would help her. I know  when she doesn't use the sleeping pills it takes her forever to get to sleep and then she wakes up in the night has to down a glass of wine to help her fall back asleep. I know my mom had a lot of trouble sleeping too. Anyway, any thoughts?

I did shift work up until a year ago and had severe problems with getting to sleep.  I used (and still currently use) Yogi Teas Bedtime formula.  It's a blend of valerian and passion flower along with several other herbs.  I could probably make it myself, but it is so effective that I just keep buying it.
