The Garlic fetishes made my DH crack up...

I vote for the Water Street Coffee Joint! Fresh roasted beans and homemade goodies (that I didn't have to make!)? Oh yeah! If I'm going to splurge, I like to do it Properly! Who knows, maybe they carry organic coffee beans  Grin

I know that the K-zoo co-op carries coffee beans from Water Street. I don't remember but they might be organic. Smiley Water Street also makes these wonderful chocolate-peanut butter things...Yummy!! For a big treat, get a chai ice cream shake!
Okay, Jonah and I have to go now! Smiley
Dara, are you going? Do we finally get to meet? I think I am going to met whoever is going but not go to the workshop.
The co-op is not far from the coffee shop, I believe so if you want to do some shopping, you'd be close for anyone interested.

Here is a link to a Kalamazoo map. The red star is where the People's Co-op is located.

Is it a co-op that is open to the public? A whole foods co-op, or what?

I'm still deciding for sure...

Yes, the store part is open to the public. I use to do a lot of my health food shopping there when I worked in Kalamazoo. I don't believe you can order anything in bulk unless you are a member. The store is tiny but jammed with lots of stuff. I enjoy buying produce there. But, they have raw milk cheese, free range meats, herbs, and lots of other things. They try to do as much as possible locally.

Are the prices like co-op prices, or HFS prices?  (high or low?)

Ok, all you MI ladies....would you want to get together on Wed. around noon, just to "meet" and have lunch or coffee or something?  And then those who are going to the workshop could head off there and the others could go home.  But that way we could still meet.  Any takers?  Any thoughts?  We could be the pioneers in a very, very small "regional WTM meeting".   Wink  Well...let me know what you think.  Grin

Katie

That does sound like fun Smiley  I would have to be a little later than noon for me though.......
ditto for me if I go.

I've found the prices to vary. The price on produce is usually better than HFS but most things, I believe run the same as HFS. I'm not too good at comparing...I just liked the variety of things. The store is a bit "hippy" like, but they are always pretty informative.

I've shopped there once, and I like it (it seemed as pricey as most HFS)...variety, like Jessica said.

Ok, ladies...I'm going to suggest 3 pm at Water Street Coffee Joint and see if we can't get something concrete going.   Cheesy  I'm not going to the workshop at night, but I still think it would be fun to meet you.  Let me know what you think about this.  Remember, if it's not convenient, we can always  plan it for another day, week, month... Cool

Unless something changes, I'm in. It sounds too fun to miss. I don't know if I'm going to the conference or not, depends partly on whether I carpool...

The funeral I have to attend is at 2, luncheon at 3, and it's a 1 1/2 hour drive.. I wouldn't get there on time to visit..  Undecided But since so many posted an interest in getting together.. Let's plan something! I guess first we need to find a central location.. you can IM me, or post your city, and I'll start sticking pins in a map.. We'll go from there..

Do we have a head count? I'm just trying to plan my week. I will be there unless it is snowing. I'm a baby when it comes to driving in the snow.  Cheesy
I am also up for another gathering if this doesn't work. Maybe a picnic somewhere in a central location. I'll bring the cabbage juice and beet kvass.  Wink

Well, I might consider INCH, but I hate paying for stuff like that- I go mostly to look at the vendor's tables...

Well, fellow Michiganians, it looks like we're not meeting in KaZoo today. We'd love to still get together sometime, so one of these days we'll have to try again. Thanks for the idea, and the effort!  I guess if we want to learn about fermented food, we can check out this cool site called WellTellMe.com. I hear it has lots of good advise...  Wink

It is a winter wonderland here as well! It is so windy, I'm afraid my house is going to end up in Kansas. Wink
I am looking forward to meeting you MI ladies! We could hold our own fermentation workshop when we get together.
We should start planning....

Undecided Smiley I'd love to meet you guys. Esp. that dara lady I've heard about from my SIL and also a good friend, hedy.   Wink

Actually, just tell us when you're coming and we'll plan it for then! We're going to need a kick in the seat anyway! And anyway, I just have cool friends, that's all.

Ok, I'll have to do that. Actually this Sat. hubby and I plan to be there for an hour or 2 on our way to a wedding in IN, but it looks like we'll be down there in June sometime.

Isn't it great having cool friends?  Wink

We got to make our own saurkraut Smiley  It was pretty good.  I bought the Wild Fermentation book and I started my sourdough starter today.  It wasn't as full of information as I had hoped (i.e how to make it stuff etc) It was more informative as to why to ferment and the history of it.  It was a nice excuse for a girl's night out.  I did feel a little out of place though Smiley
