Another question, does Kombucha have the same positive effect on your blood sugar as ACV?

I have found a new product called Gourdin that is supposed to be safe for pregnant women (gestational diabetes) children, pets, adults, ect.  It is a  very concentrated part of the seeds of the Bitter Gourd (bittermelon) . THere are clinical studies and 3-4 pregnant women with Gestational diabetes were included in the study. Its supposed to help prevent diabetes and lower sugars.

I have, over the past year, used a very low carb diet to control insulin resistance.  I would not eat grain or potatoes.

I have been back on this diet since I became pregnant.  I happened to need to stop a serious bout of diarrhea yesterday and ate complex carbs twice.

I have so much more energy when I break over and eat a a couple of grain servings in a day.  They are greatly reduced, but still.  Also, I think I've noticed that my bowel function improves as well.

Has anyone else had the problem of cutting out all grain and potatoes and losing energy?  I know carbs are fuel, so I'm wondering if I'm too strict?

Thanks,
Cara

Thanks justjane, I appreciate the possible confirming of what I think I've been seeing.

I already did that posting, on herbal remedies/adrenals.  Well, maybe I did, anyway Undecided.  I'm on less than half a brain nowadays.

Thank you,

Well, after watching my carbs, exercising nearly everyday of my pregnancy right up to the week before I gave birth and taking those supplememts listed at the beginning of the thread I gave birth to a healthy 8lb 3oz baby girl.

She slept through the night early, has been very easy going and is growing well.

I think you might be a little too strict.  I found adding oatmeal (1 cup) as a side to my breakfast of 2 scrabbled eggs helped stoke my furnace in the morning.  Then I used sun flower seeds, pepitos or sliced almonds on my salad with chicken or other meat for lunch.

The trick was getting a variety of nuts and seeds, having 4 cups of dark green, leafy salad and lots of broccoli and/or green beens with dinner.

You have to have some carbs, just choose the ones that don't flood your system with glucose.

It is interesting this came back up.  I did cut grain right after having my baby 4 weeks ago.  The same situation--I ran out of steam.

With adrenal insufficiency, it is not optimal to cut out complex carbs according to the book recommended on the adrenal thread.  Since that has been my biggest issue, I have followed the directions in the book--equal portions of complex carbs and protein along with a good amount of raw.  That way I do feel well, and did in the pregnancy that just ended.

Interesting enough, the high protein diet for pregnancy (the Brewer's diet) specifically says not to cut complex carbs.  I am wondering if it is a good idea to perhaps cut flours and go to whole cereal grains.  Flours may would go through the system faster and have more of an impact on blood sugar/insulin levels than brown rice or corn grits, oatmeal, etc.

Also, I am attempting to soak my grains--I wonder if increased digestability would help insulin resistance?  I may very well try to cut out all breads and just eat cereal grains, soaked properly and well cooked.  I'll post if I find that is a good thing.

Just some thoughts,
Cara

Cara,

It sounds like you have a good idea going there. The one thing I would point out is that corn grits or cornmeal are ground. The would affect blood sugar almost as fast as flour would. Also, if I'm not mistaken, isn't corn grits made from just the starchy part of corn with the germ (& much of the protein) removed? It would probably be better to avoid the ground grain products entirely. Besides, corn is a low protein grain & higher in carbs than most of the grains so it's probably not the best choice for someone carb sensitive anyway.

If I remember correctly, the reason the Brewer diet specifically says not to cut complex carbs is to keep the protein you're eating from being used for fuel. If you aren't eating enough carbs your body has to use protein (or body fat- the point of a low carb diet for weight loss) for fuel. The thing is, breaking down protein for fuel is hard on the body & if your body is using the protein you are eating for fuel it can't use the protein to keep your blood pressure down, etc which is the whole point of the Brewer diet. If you're using body fat for fuel b/c you're eating too low carb your body goes into ketosis which is hard on your body also & can damage a baby's developing brain if you are pregnant.

As far as soaking the grains helping, I figure that it's very likely that the soaking is making the fiber & protein more digestible which helps to slow down the absorption of the carbs resulting in a more stable blood sugar.  That's my theory for it anyway. The soaking is bound to make it more digestible & therefore more 'stick with you' & you absorb more of the vits, etc which means that you are less hungry so it probably helps save on the grocery bill anyway so that's a good thing even without any other benefits. If it's not making your blood sugar & adrenal issues worse then I say go for it. Just my .02. Blessings ~herbalmom

Hello ~  this is a related but a postpartum/nursing and insulin resistant question - I didn't know where else to post.   I have just given birth to a healthy baby boy after a pregnancy with many of the same issues raised on this thread.  Thankfully with a careful diet and exercise (t-tapp)  I was able to keep my sugars under control - most of the time.   I found a herbal supplement  called Blood Sugar with gymnema by Nature's Way (capsules) that contains (I don't have time to give all the exact amounts) chromium, vitamin A, cinnamon, fenugreek, nopal, gymnema, bitter melon and bilberry.   I was pretty excited to find this because it contained ALL of the herbs that I had heard were helpful but never had gotten around to trying all of them.   Of course, like practically all of the herbal supplements out there it says not to use during pregnancy or lactation.   I didn't worry too much about during pregnancy, I was so close to being due and really needed a little extra help keeping my sugar levels down.
Does anyone know if taking this supplement (or any of the particular ingredients) could be harmful for a nursing baby?   I was wondering if it could throw off HIS blood sugar by getting some of the herbs in my milk?
Thank you!

I did a quick search and here is what I found.
Cinnamon- safe, but may cause diaper rash
Fenugreek - safe, increases milk
Nopal- it is not reccommended for use during pregnancy and nursing because only limited research has been done. (at least they haven't found anything negative, yet)
Gymnema- not determined if it is safe or not, but I found that it can also be used to help with weight loss, so you might want to consider that when thinking about the baby.
Bitter melon- milk stimulant
Bilberry- safe

I hope this helps.

I know this is an older thread but I wanted to add what I have learned. I have PCOS with Type 2 Diabetes. We prayed for a baby for 9 years. At Christmas we found out we were pregnant only because I bought a test on a whim. I really did not believe I was. In January we found out I was 17 weeks along. Yes, I went through about 12 weeks of pregnancy without knowing it.  Shocked The bad news is my BS were over 200 for those weeks. I could not get them down. When I found out I was pregnant I was DEVESTATED to think of what I'd done to my baby.
She looks great on the ultrasounds and now we just keep praying she will be ok.
I was started on Insulin at my first OB appt. I usually do my own thing but through this I have found that I am trusting my Dr a lot more than usual. It's a scary time for me and he has been very helpful.
Here is what I have learned through research and my Dr.
Everyone processes carbs differently. In the afternoon I can have fruit or milk and my blood sugar is still in the less than 120 range two hours later. (the ideal)
If my fasting is less than 90 I can have a piece of WG toast and cheese with veggie for breakfast. If it's over 100 I can only have a veggie and protein.
Snacking through the day is essential to ease hunger and keep my blood sugar from bieng too high or too low.
I am taking notes to change a lot of stuff after she is born. What great info you all have.
