Here's a good idea for sinus problems from another thread.

In the mean time, if you're looking for help especially for colds, I highly suggest Eucalyptus. Shake several drops onto a clean wash cloth and inhale as often as you think of it. (If it isn't burning your nose/throat when you're inhaling it, you don't have it close enough to your mouth/nose. It's a good idea to cover your mouth and the cloth w/ your hands (sort of like if you were hyperventilating I guess haha.) Now, it won't burn after you've done it a few times, but you want to be sure you're REALLY inhaling it. The best thing is to make sure you've sprinkled the drops in one little area so you can put your mouth on the cloth to inhale the oil in with out your lips actually touching the eucalyptus oil (It will burn!)

It actually leaves sort of a pleasantly sweet and refreshing after taste and feeling in your mouth/throat. If your little boy has a cold, you can show daddy how "stong and big and brave" he is, cause even tho it burns, he's a man and he inhales it. Wink Haha, but maybe explain that not everything that burns when inhaled is proving manhood.

Anyways, people have even cured pneumonia (spelling?) by inhaling Eucalyptus. I've used it to treat allergies and cold/flu type throat/nose/ear issues.

So...here's to menthol. Grin

Be sure, however, that when you buy Eucalyptus, you by Euc. Globulus, not Euc. Citridora. The Citridora is just like an off candle (yuck!) and just having the bottle in your med. cabinet will make the whole area smell like Off.  Tongue (I know, because I once bought a whole pound of the stuff by mistake.)

 Cheesy

This is something you can do w/o abunch of prep or time put into it, and it works wonders. So if it sounds like something you'd like to try, give it a go!

and Flonase --needs prescription and is usually prescribed for allergies-- (last resort steroid to open nasal passages - takes 3 days of consistant use to work, but after that, your head will open and the mucous will begin to expell).  This regimin has gotten me through many a sinus infection.  Then once I started getting my body in better shape, I got less and less of these infections and upping my Vit C and eating a couple cloves of fresh garlic will usually head one off at the first sign of a tickle.

Clinical and experimental evidence indicates that corticosteroids can cause permanent eye damage by inducing central serous retinopathy (CSR, also known as central serous chorioretinopathy, CSC). A variety of steroid medications, from anti-allergy nasal sprays (Nasonex, Flonase) to topical skin creams, to eye drops (Tobradex), to Prednisone have been implicated in the development of CSR.

I had a sinus infection coming on and tried the recipe from the bulkherbstore and it worked!  Steep a crushed clove of garlic in 6 oz of water for ten minutes.  Add a TB of apple cider vinegar and raw honey to taste.  I thought I was going to vomit while getting the garlic down and I should have done it again before bed, but I felt so much better the next day and within 30 minutes of doing it my nose running like crazy.  I would do it again.

I second this remedy. Have a tissue ready when you drink it as things will start to flow within a few sips. The kids think it's like sweet pickle juice and ask for it at the first sign of a sniffle.  Smiley

Do you think I could get anything out of this remedy if I used pasteurized honey? (I don't have any raw on hand).

This may be a silly question - but you also swallow the garlic right? Do you crush it in a garlic press? Is there another way to crush garlic if you don't have a press. If this is so good, I may just try it. I suffer from terrible sinus trouble even lose the ability to smell most of the time - probably need to do a cleanse but with nursing that will have to wait Undecided

I just tried the vinegar garlic stuff.  NASTY.  Anyone for hot pickle juice Huh  I got some relief in that it opened up my nose a bit, but no runny nose for me.  I'm thinking maybe it's the spice that works for most people Huh  It's not near spicy enough to get my nose runnin' if that's the case.  I eat hot peppers with about every other meal.

For anyone who hasn't tried it, I'd say it's worth the gulp or two to get some air flowing through the nose and sinus cavities, but I'm going to have to find something else to get the  fluids moving.   Tongue

I'm going to bed, I'll let you know if I feel any different about it in the morning.   Grin

I did the honey/garlic thing recently and used honey from Wal-Mart and it worked like a charm! I did it about twice the first day because it was later in the day and then did it three times the next day and then I was fine.

I just put a clove of garlic through my garlic press but I am sure that you could mine it as well and covered it with honey. WARNING - this was really not EASY at all BUT the results were wonderful. Have a piece of bread in the other hand after you do this to start eating it right away that really helped.

Here's my experience from another thread!

I didn't know where else to post this but since Sunday I have felt like I am coming down with a sinus infection. I had been using the XClear but still did not see any improvement. I was started to get some colored snot as well (sorry I didn't know any other way to put that). I have never done the garlic with the honey because I was breastfeeding and garlic bothered my son. I am no longer breastfeeding (he is a year old now) so I thought it was time for me to try it.

I did it yesterday and it really was a very unplesant experience! I had a burning sensation that started in my chest and ran up my arms to my shoulders. I ate a piece of celery as soon as I could pull myself up from being hunched over. WOW was that harsh! I BUT I can't rave enough about the results. Within 30 minutes my nose had stopped running and the tenderness in my face went away.

I took another dose before I went to bed and it was much easier to take this time. I also had a piece of bread ready to eat after I took it and I think that helped!

I took some more this morning and gave some to my 5yearold.  She threw up in her hands.  I think she did manage to keep some of it down, but she reports no observable results...okay, back up, she just blew her nose and reports that she can now breath.  She was so stopped up this morning that she was talking very funny.

As for me -- it didn't really work.  Definately not worth the trouble and the nasty taste. Lips Sealed

Have you tried warm compresses yet?  I do that cuz I've been pregnant/nursing 'forever' and it's really cleared my head up & relieves pain too.

And that "hot water - cold water" thing sounds like it would be even better - if I could get myself to do it.

I am sorry the garlic didn't work. I would only do that if it worked! My 3-year old had a little taste and almost threw up as well and begged me to never give her that again! I don't think I could ever get her to take it again.

My little one got a cold on Sunday and I started him on Sambucol yesterday and it has made a huge difference as well as I made my first batch of GOOT yesterday.

I hope you feel better soon!

OK - so my whole family's allergies have been awful the past week!

Now hubby and I are fighting sinus infections so we have started eating garlic and honey. This worked great for me another time. Hubby is not a fan of this - he almost loses it while doing it but I found a great way to lessen the harshness of raw garlic. Hubby will actually take it now!

Mince your clove of garlic or put it through the garlic press. Spread on a piece of bread. Cover with honey. We fold the bread together and eat it. IMO the after effects are much better than putting it on a spoon and covering with honey and then eating the piece of bread. We have not experienced the heartburn that we did with the spoon method.

We live in Fl and the cold weather is arriving tonight! It will be 48 for our low! BRRRRR! It was 90 degrees yesterday. Hopefully the cooler weather will help to alleviate our allergy problems.

I think that would be fine. I personally haven't found much that raw garlic goes great with LOL! My hubby actually takes it without the honey - the bread masks it enough for him. I enjoy something sweet with it so that is why I don't think the cinnamon is a bad idea.

Maybe it's cheating, but we roast our garlic in a pan with olive oil, add Italian herbs, and dip bread in it. We can't keep the kids out of it, and it's gone pronto... we all relish it, even the baby.

HB, now might be another wonderful chance to try that awesome immune awake tincture you made- if you're sick enough, you won't even taste it, straight! Or just add garlic to your kimchi? Hmmm.

There's already tons of garlic in the kimchee.  My immune tincture is all gone.  I haven't made anymore.  Looking for alternatives.  I actually got my kids to eat chopped garlic on a spoon with honey.

OK --

Just an update my husband is finally a believer that garlic is a natural antibiotic - YEAH!

His sinus infection was so bad he was blowing brown. He took one clove of garlic on a piece of bread (he does not like his with honey - I do!) twice a day for five days and it was completely gone. He was so happy - no copay for Dr and no antibiotic like he usually does.

He has been a little reluctant with some of my new way to thinking but finally came around on this one! He had tried the garlic before but thought it was awful that he would not keep up with it until he tried it on the bread.

For him and me it actually got easier each time that we did it.

I am also going to try some of these other remedies as well since I know that with the two of us we are bound to have another sinus infection some time.

Dara - this works for you even though you roast the garlic? I would much rather eat mine like this! Doesn't garlic need to be raw for the allinase to be present? I guess it does work for you but how much do you eat?

Here is information that SC left on garlic in the GOOT thread.

"...it will cook the garlic and destroy the allinase in the clove. The healthful properties of garlic are fragile and subject to be destroyed when heated.

When garlic is crushed or broken, the enzyme allinase is released. This is one of thousands of constituents all interacting together in garlic. Allin(which becomes allinase) holds many of garlic's health-promoting properties and is just one of thirty sulfur compounds found in garlic.

When garlic is processed (cooked, dried, heated, ect.) and utilized outside of its raw state, you are receiving it in a diminished form."

My 11 year old daughter has suffered with chronic sinus infections since she was a baby.  Usually she starts sometime around Christmas with an infection she'll go on antibiotic get better and 1 1/2 to 2 weeks later she has another infection this cycle continues well into April.  We've gone the traditional medical route of treatment.  She's taken allergy injections for 2years had her tonsills and adenoids removed and been on a boat load of meds, allegra, singular, inhalers, nasal sprays etc.  Sinus rinses have been helpful but sometimes she's so clogged up the saline doesn't get through.  I'm an RN and I'm familiar with the traditional route of treatment but this treatment is not making her better it's making her worse.  She has already started in with sinus infections this year -  two months earlier than in the past!  I realize she probably has zero normal bacterial flora and she probably needs to be on vit. C, I am not opposed to using a more natural approach to treating her.  I'm just not as familiar with this approach.  Can anyone recommend some vitamins or supplements that would help?

These ought to really help get you started.
The antibiotics are contributing to the problem, not helping it.  There are several other threads here helping moms figure out how to best help their children get over illnesses naturally and building your immune system and a good one on how to begin eating naturally.  Eating right and building a healthy immune system all work together to prevent illness.
Hope this helps.   Smiley

Hi Lynn --

There is an excellent thread here with information on how to treat a sinus infection.

http://welltellme.com/discuss/index.php/topic,2670.0.html

I know it so well because my husband and I battle them as well and we are starting to see good results with garlic and taking A LOT of vitamin C.

ALSO - since your daughter has been on antibititics so much I would recommend a good probtiotic like Tummy Tune Up from Beeyoutiful. I use it for my toddler's as well because they have been on antibiotics so much and I think that they could have yeast problems from it which in turn could be bringing on all of these other illnesses.

For more on that read this thread:

Be sure to keep us updated on your results!

Lynn, you asked for products.  Here is a great product.

Dr Christopher's Sinus Plus Formula:

Excellent for sinus infections.  I usually follow the directions, two capsules three times per day, for at least two weeks if not a month for chronic problems.  My husband has had many problems and even surgery for chronic sinuses and this is a product that works wonders.

Since you are unfamiliar I will lists the herbs and their properties for you.

Bringham Tea Herb: I don't know about this one
Marshmallow Root: soothes and heals the mucus membranes
Goldenseal Root:  dries and cleanses the mucus membranes
Horseradish: breaks up mucus and cleanses
Burdock Root: blood cleanser, also relieves congestion in the lymphatic system
Parsley Root:  expels excess mucus
Lobelia Herb: removes congestion in the body and creates  relaxation in the affected areas
Cayenne Pepper (40MHU): stimulates the blood,  a great addition to herbal formulas.

Sometimes an antibiotic will cause the infection to go deeper into the tissues and chronic problems can arise from this.  Case in point:  my grandmother has chronic bladder infections.  The antibiotics make them "go away" but when she gets a little exercise and starts feeling well the infection comes back.  I believe the body decides it can deal with infection and pulls it back out so the symptoms come back and then comes the antibiotic where the body says, "I gotta deal with this antibiotic so I'll stuff this infection back"  it is a cycle.
The sinuses are a way for the body to cleanse.  Herbs support that cleansing process and that is why herbs work to "heal" the body.  The herbs aren't healing just supporting.  The Creator made our bodies able to cleanse and heal and herbs support this natural process.
Garlic, Thyme, Echinacea...they all have certain properties, certain "jobs" to help the body.  If the body has support and health then it can fight anything.

I checked a local health food store and they didn't have the Dr. Christopher's. I did buy some colloidal silver, MSM(methylsulfonylmethane) and a wellness formula which the man at the store said would help build her immunity( does this sound ok?.) I stocked up on Vit. C, ordered tummy tune up and am getting ready to make my first batch of GOOT Smiley  Just to let you know how sold I am on all of this I have to share my experiences over the past two mornings.  My sweet girl woke up Tuesday with sinus conjestion and a headache, normally I would give her all of her meds plus 400mg of ibuprofen but instead I made her the garlic, cider vinegar tea.  Within 10 min. of drinking it her headache and congestion was gone Shocked This morning she woke up with the same symptoms so this time she ate a clove of crushed garlic slathered with honey on a piece of bread---amazing thing happened, headache and congestion disappeared!  My only question is does anyone have any tips on neutralizing the garlic oder?  My girl smells like a walking Caesar salad  Roll Eyes

Sinus or cold something has been going through our house.  Husband had it two weeks ago and I fed him Immune Booster, Composition (elderberry, yarrow, peppermint), and sage tea.  He also used Goot all over his neck and sinuses.  The kids and I took the tinctures and the occasional sage tea and my 3 yo didn't get it until last week.  I kept after it and cleared her up in a few days.  I started getting a bad sore throat Friday and started rubbing Goot on my neck and took some garlic oil drops.  The sore throat was gone by Sunday but now I have extreme sinus pressure and can't breath.  I don't think I have any junk left in my sinuses because it doesn't feel like I need to blow.  In fact, they have been burning and feeling real dry.  I put eucalyptus oil in the vaporizer twice last night but never opened up.  I just drank a tea made with a clove of pressed garlic, lemon juice, ginger, cayenne and honey.  My throat was on fire from the cayenne and my ears itched terribly for a little bit, then nothing.  Still stopped up.  I occasionally have an urge to sneeze but seems to be triggered by a dry, itchy feeling.

Is this sinus infection or just sinus trouble?  I don't have any signs of an infection like fever or anything.  We are all tired from opening weekend of deer season and three late nights of butchering, but otherwise I feel fine.  I just can't breath.  Angry

A suggestion:  Put your feet in ice cold water for a couple of minutes.  Should get your nose running.

Horseradish is good as a decongestant.  My guess is the sore throat was from post nasal drip and when it stopped, the stuff that was dripping stopped you up.  The burning could be from a dry house or being outdoors or mucus that is not moistening your sinuses which could be where the pain is coming in.  I am trying to think of some kind of nasal spray you could use to moisten those areas.  You could try sucking up salt water in one side of your nose then the other.  1/2 tsp salt dissolved in 1 cup water.  Plug one side and lightly snort.  The let it run back out, repeat with the other side.  Depending on how your sinuses are it may go in one side and out the other. If you have sinus pressure then I would think you have something in there causing the pressure which is most probably mucus. If that mucus gets wet with the salt water then it might help it break up.  Hot water that is steaming with eucalyptus oil or thyme would be good too Just cover your head and the bowl with a towel the keep the steam in and breathe through your nose.  If it is an infection, then the garlic should be taking care of it and the Immune Booster should be helping

That's a few suggestions.  I hope you feel better.
