Ok, One more remedy that I didn't see listed on this thread.
I woke up this morning with a very clogged nose.  Have been doing garlic, tinctures... during the past day for the beginnings of a sore throat. This morning I woke up and my sore throat was gone, instead I had very painful clogged sinuses  Angry  I immediately did
The Cayenne Pepper Cure.   Shocked
Either put a small amount of warm water in your hand and add 2-4 grains of cayenne.
(Don't overdo this!)
Snort it up first one nose and then repeat with the other.

Or, if you don't like snorting things, which I DON'T, here is another option.
Wet the end of a cotton swab and put several grains of cayenne on it.  Gently insert up your nose and swab carefully around.
This does burn and it does make your nose run! But hey, it unclogs it pretty quickly.
This should be done along with garlic, immune tincture, Vit. C and whatever else you normally do for colds/infections etc.  This is just a quick remedy for some instant relief, and alone it won't cure your infection.

Please forgive me ahead of time if this question has already been answered, but I did search for it and couldn't seem to find it.  My 16 mo old daughter has had what I would call a sinus infection (green, snotty nose) that keeps coming back.  I also think it's this because my other 4 children have not caught "it" and they normally follow suit within a few days of each other.   I have just learned about the garlic poultices and was doing that with her about 3 times a day and it would go away.  I would continue this for just a few days after the green stuff went away--she would seem all better--and then two weeks later another one!  This is the third time and now it has gone into her chest.  I'm giving her lobelia for the cough which works great, but before I start the garlic poultice again, am I not doing it for long enough after her symptoms subside?  How many days should I do the garlic poultice?  I appreciate any advice--she's miserable and I just want to "make it all better"!

My advice would be to give her a laxative (like prune juice, aloe vera juice, drink a bunch of water) and/or give her an enema. When my son (and me too) gets these yellow snot sinus infections, he is usually backed up down there too. When "junk" can't come out the bottom end it comes out any way it can. Through skin (rashes), sinus infections, lungs, etc. If it is a virus/bacteria then perhaps feed her freshly crushed up garlic on a spoon drizzled with raw honey daily. They can't resist!  Wink And maybe a garlic enema.

This might help too:

I'll try just about anything, but I hate to do an enema unless I have to.  She goes to the bathroom regularly (at least once a day and it's a good consistency).  She has even continued to do this throughout these last few bouts.  I'm definitely going to try the garlic and honey--she may enjoy that.  Thanks for responding!

After 3 mos. of drainage and a head full of goop and many natural supplements, I finally went to the doctor reluctantly today. I feel the large doses of vit. C and pro-biotics have prolonged my "misery" in a sense.   No, I really feel that if not for them, I would have been too sick to carry on months ago.
Anyway, I woke up this morning and the ceiling was twirling, only I was lying still in bed and I don't live on a boat.  When I tried to get up, the dizziness (strangely, more concentrated to the left side of my head) was so bad I had to close my eyes and grab for something. Scared to death, I called the dr. and they worked me in. When he looked in my left ear and he was amazed that I hadn't had any real pain in it. Just pressure and "fullness" and feel like there's a huge balloon coming out of my ear and of course the dizzines. Anyone had a major ear infection w/o much pain? He looked in it several times and said it looked uniformly deep red- rather than splotches of red (like the other more mildly infected right ear). He commented that it almost looked like a ball of red ear wax.   But then he looked again, and said "No, that's definitely the ear drum. I don't even know what the healthy middle ear is supposed to look like, but the things he said kinda worried me. My semi-paranoid self has even though, "What if it was a tumor that he saw in there?!" So, I'm wondering does anyone know if infected middle ears can look "uniform" or like "red balls of wax" ?
I didn't want to, but he gave me antibiotics and I feel like this is one of those few times I may need to take them so I won't be miserable for 3 more months...
The dizziness has gotten much better already and he did indeed say it was an infection and he confirmed it was caused by chronic sinusitus (which I had self-diagnosed already). He made it sound so horrible, yet it had not yet bursted, as there has been no residue and as far as I know my temp. hasn't been much more than 99. He didn't seem to have an answer to why my severe sinus headaces and pressure are more "concentrated" on the left side of my face/head. He said it usualy begins on one side and goes to the other if not treated.
One more thing, and this may be a whole other thread, but maybe someone can help? Two years ago, I woke up one morning and noticed a pea-sized "knot" just behind my left ear. I treated it with antibiotics and nothing changed. I had chronic sinusitis then too and mostly when I blew my nose, there would be a touch of blood from the left nostril only or mostly. This little "thing"- it would shrink as the sinuses cleared up and "fill back out" to the size of a pea again when I was congested or had drainage.  For the past two years, that is exactly what it has dobe.  The pattern has not changed. Some days, I will feel it and its ALMOST gone! Some days, its bigger like the pea again, but in two years, it has NEVER totally gone away. My doctor says I shouldn't worry (he's just an MD, not the  natural-path that I wish he was). He says that it is a "stretched out lymph node" He says its been stretched in and out so many times by infection, that it may never totally go in to where I can't feel it. He compared it to tonsils being stretched out of shape by infections, etc. and therefore being permenantly enlarged. Of course, I only felt the one time 2 years ago- never before so I'm not sure when it has done all its "stretching". Has anyone had any experience with these things? And is there any way to naturally make them go away or back to normal? And could it be something totally different than what the dr. is telling me? Maybe he doesn't know. He hasn't done any tests. I can't find anyone else that have had these "stretched lymphnodes" except one person who said hers went away in a couple of years. I would find it very comforting if I could find more! Thanks so much.

Hello.  I was wondering if anyone has used garlic to cure a sinus infection.  I'm not sure where to put the garlic, I cringe to think that it has to be up my nose...and if so for how long?!?  I have terrible sinus pain and my mucus is pretty nasty and green.

This is my first post - ever- and what a nice way to introduce myself....the girl with the nasty green nose Tongue

I'm up for trying anything so if you have any other suggestions rather than garlic please let me know.  Warmly, <><

Welcome. You don't need to put garlic up your nose, you take it by mouth. Enter garlic in the search & you will get bunches of threads you can check. To narrow your search try entering sinus or infection & the plugged ear thread was merged into another thread but it had a few different ways to flush your sinuses out which would help. Put plugged ear into the search & it will bring it up & you will be able to use the link to get to the thread it was merged into. Sorry, I can't do links right now but maybe someone else will.

Hi! Unhappily, I have gotten my 1st sinus infection... Right now I am trying to eat about 5 garlic cloves per day, while also drinking Goldenseal Tincture 4 to 6 times a day. Within the last probably 30 hours, I have seen a tremendous relieve.

I've never used Goldnenseal for anything and pretty much never looked into it until now (my midwife told me to take it). Does anyone know much about it and why it would help with a sinus infection?

Me again. Ok, I am in a LOT of pain. The tremendous relieve I was talking about has left me Undecided. My nose can breathe pretty well, but my ears are really starting to bother me!! I've been doing as much research on here as I could think of and trying different things. Within the last 2 hours I have stuck bruised garlic cloves in my ears.....then after that I put a few drops of onion juice in both ears and layed on each side for about 15 minutes.... its seems to have made the pain worse! Shocked Huh What am I to do know?? I need relieve and detailed ideas.... please help me!! Prayer would be nice. I need to go into labor, but I definitely don't want to like this... Embarrassed Thanks a lot![/

I think this might be a little late if you are already headed to your doctor...But my $.02 comes from advice from my midwife.  I had a painful sinus infection and had tried nearly everything.  Nothing helped and since I was pregnant, I didn't want to take anything.  My midwife said to get 2 bowls.  1 filled with as hot of water as you could stand, and the other filled with as cold of water as you could stand.  Hold your breath and dip entire face into the hot bowl.  Do this for about 2 minutes...coming up for air as needed.  Then, put your face into the cold bowl.  If you can't stick your entire face in(I tried and gasped...it's just harder to hold your breath in cold freezing cold water)  put one side in at a time...alternating this also for 2 minutes.  I did this about every 15 minutes for 2 hours and immediately felt relief.  Everything broke up and I could actually feel my sinus' "cracking"?  Anyways, continued for the rest of the day and could breathe very well by night-time(I started at 2:00 p.m.)  I completely swear by it and haven't had that bad of a sinus infection since.  The midwife said the hot water gets everything flowing and then the cold water shrinks the vessels?(I'm no doctor) so you can blow everything out or swallow it.  Like I said, that's my $.02...good luck!

OK now, that worked the first time!  I put it off for a day thinking I couldn't do it but after the first 'dip' it wasn't so bad.  I'm going to keep this up and see if my 14 yo will do it. I havn't had a SI like this in years!

I guess this goes here...

My baby girl has had a dry crusty nose for exactly a month now.  Within the last week or so, the crusty snot has turned a reddish brown.  It this a sinus infection?  A sign of an extremely dry nose?

My husband and I have been kind of dealing with sinus issues for the last month also.  We went to from Louisiana to Alaska (extremely dry climate) to Ohio (dry, but not as dry) and back to Louisiana in 3 weeks time.  Our noses all got intensely dry (my nose felt like it was on fire!), and we haven't really been the same sense.

Any thoughts?

You could try using a humidifier in your home.  It has really helped our family and I can tell when we forget to turn it on at night or it runs out.  My nose starts to burn!  We started by running it day and night and then went to just using it at night.  Meanwhile you can be using the goot on your little one--that has cleared up my 18mo old's sinus infection the last two times.  After using the goot just 24 hours the green stuff goes away.  The reddish brown could be a combination of the dry and having a sinus infection.  If you don't know about goot, just type it in the search area and you'll find out all about it.  Hope this helps and your little one is feeling better soon!

I am desperate for any help.  Background- I had a sinus infection a couple months back, could not get over it trying natural remedies and had to go on an antibiotic.  I have since then got tummy tuneup, bee propolis, taking supermom and other vits as well.  I have gone off sugar and processed foods and felt like I was really getting "clean" on the inside.  NOW, I am back with a stubborn sinus infection again, my left side on my neck is swollen and in excruciating pain, it spreads up to my head as well.  I can barely open my mouth and chew, it is even painful to swallow.  I saw a MD yesterday who of course prescribed an antibiotic, and said I could take 600mg of motrin for the pain every 4 hrs.  Then, I went to the naturaopath, had acupuncture, and was sent home with a bunch of herbal remedies, supplements and Kali bichrmium.  Today, even with implementing all the above, as well as today needing Percoset for the pain, and a muscle relaxer....nothing is helping.  I am doing 2 sinus rinses a day and I can't sleep without my throat and nose drying up to where I almost can't breathe.  Does anyone have a clue what I am up against here?  Both MD and ND think the congestions is just so thick it will take a few days to break up. I am getting scared that there is something more going on.  I have evvn tried garlic/onion poultices too.  Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.  By the way- when I say excruciating pain I mean it.  I bore 4 sons naturally and I would much rather be in labor than baring this pain!!!

I am praying for you Fallmom!  I know what kind of pain you are talking about.  I have only had it that bad once but that is enough!!!

My mom used to suffer from sinus infections horribly also.  A "natural" friend of hers got her to try alfalfa tea.  It was made with alfalfa seeds, about 1 teaspoon for 4 cups if I remember right.  It made her nose run so much she couldn't hardly do anything for 2 hours except blow and wipe -- but it got the pressure off so she was happy.

Cautionary Note: I have heard since that alfalfa seed isn't good for you so you should do your own research.  It didn't make mom sick but I can't guarentee anything.

Get a shot glass or a medicine cup and put 1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper, 1 tsp honey, and a TBSP of water.  Mix it and down the hatch!  Yes, it will probably burn, but will start to ease your drainage.  Now, it won't make it all go away right away, but do it every hour on the hour if you have to.

I'm back, complaining again... Sad

I have had NON-STOP (and this is nearly 5 mos. now!) drainage from my sinuses into the back of my throat, severe nasal congestion- my nose will be pouring effortlessly and totally plugged at the same time. y whole nose and the surrounding sinuses feel like they're about to explode at any time. I take high doses of vitamin C, a homepathic sinus remedy, I flush my sinuses with saline solution, I breathe steam- I've even taken Claritin and nasal decongestants. I cannot get any relief! I can no longer smell or taste. I don't even like to eat because I have to chew w/ my mouth slightly open or swallow really fast so I can catch a breath since my nose is so stopped up. And I just feel so bad overall from fighting this thing so long. Strangely, it seems maybe every 10 days, things will *appear* as though they may be clearing up and this will tease me for a maximum of 2-3 days. Then, it all comes back full force. It usually leads to a full blown sinus infection or ear infection. I was hoping when warm weather came, I'd be well. Are there *any* suggestions you could give me? I am desperate and I am also worried that something serious is wrong. I don't think my body is up to doing a cleanse right now as I am so weak. Thanks in advance.

I was reading your posts on the ear infection thread & I posted an answer there & I'm posting it here as well.

I was reading back over your posts. As far as your left ear building up wax, most likely that ear canal is shaped slightly different so the wax cannot drain as well. Also if you have habits that use your right ear more & most people do, the right ear would be warmer which would melt the ear wax in it more so the wax in the right ear would run out. What kind of habits? Sleeping on that side, holding the phone to that side, wearing an ear piece for a cell phone, propping your head in your hand if your hand covers your ear etc. To clean out the wax in your left ear, try a water pik with warm water & a drop of grapefruit seed extract. (GSE) GSE is antibacterial & antifungal so it will kill any bacteria or yeast/fungus that is in the ear canal while cleaning out the ear.

As far as why your sinuses won't clear, it sounds like the infection in your sinuses is FUNGAL, NOT bacterial. There is probably a little bit of bacteria in there which is why the antibiotics help for a short time but since antibiotics help fungus flourish the fungus then gets that much worse. The MAYO clinic stated in 1999 that most chronic sinus infections are fungal, NOT bacterial but yet 8 years later most Dr's still prescribe antibiotics for chronic sinus infections instead of treating for fungus, go figure. Change is very slow in trad. medicine. Anyway, try a potent antifungal like Oreganol from North American Herb & Spice or GSE orally. There is plenty on WTM about fighting yeast/fungus.

Other possibilities that could be contributing: allergies: is it possible that you have had a water leak somewhere in your house, work, or school that has allowed mold growth: sensitivities to cleaners, perfume, laundry soap, fabric softener, shampoo, soap, insecticides, something in your clothing, bedding or furnishings, pets, flea killer & other chemicals used on a pet, etc.

Thanks herbalmom! It really makes sense about the sinusitis being fungal. On the other thread, I posted that I'm going to be able to get a "raindrop treatment" with essential oils in a couple of weeks. The oild used are supposed to be antifungal and antiviral and antibacterial, so maybe that will help. I know in their oil blend, they use oregano oil.

Ok, I think I have a sinus infection, but now I am running fever and my head is in a lot of pain.  My sinuses are not clogged because I've been doing a steam tent w/ eucalyptus oil, then alternating by putting an ice pack on my face.  As long as I do that, then my face doesn't hurt.  My ears have been clogged.  I tried the garlic tea, but I couldn't keep it down and had severe heartburn for 2 days.  I'm 37 weeks pg and I can't eat anything spicy at this point.  When I went to bed tonight, my face was hurting, but after lying down for a while, it seems like the "fluid" feeling moved to the back of my head and in my neck.  When I lean forward I get dizzy and feel pain in the back of my head and neck.  Is this all because of a sinus infection or is there something more going on?  Do people normally run 100* fevers when they have one?  I'm currently taking Sudafed and a nasal spray, and they help with my sinuses, but nothing works for the fluid build up feeling in my head except for the steam tent/ice pack treatment.  I can't sit there and do that nonstop though.

If your ears are clogged & you have face pain unless you are doing a steam treatment then your sinuses are still clogged. When you are doing the treatment, it's draining the FRONT of your sinuses which is why you feel better at the time but not the BACK of your sinuses which is why the pressure keeps returning & your ears don't clear. The sinuses are like a sack; the front of the sack connects to your nose & the back of the sack connects to the Eustachian tube which ends at the eardrum. The sinuses have an opening that drains into the back of the throat. The feeling of fluid moving was probably some of the fluid draining down your throat. The gook in your sinuses can only leave one of 2 ways- blow your nose or drain down the back of your throat. Sudafed dries out the gook in the sinuses making it even harder to get rid of. The drier it is, the thicker it is, the thicker it is, the harder it is to get rid of. You may FEEL better when taking it but it isn't helping you to get over it.

Read this thread, it has lots of ways to wash your sinuses which will help to relieve the pressure & pain in your ears.

Plugged Ears: Remedies for Ear Congestion

Fever is NORMAL when your body is fighting ANY kind of illness. It is a sign that the immune system is working. Fever does 2 things: it helps the immune system work better because immune cells work better at the higher temp & it helps weaken bacteria & viruses because they cannot live as well at the higher temp. 100 * is a fever but it is not a high fever & it won't hurt you. For a great explanation of this get the book How to Raise a Healthy Child In SPITE of Your Doctor by Dr Robert Mendelsohn. It's only about $6-8 & it would be a very good book to have with a new baby anyway. In my family we don't treat to lower fever, we treat to boost immune function.

Your ears maintain your balance. You get dizzy when you lean forward because the gook in your ears is pressing on your eardrum & messing up your balance. Dizziness with a ear or sinus infection is normal. It's a standard symptom listed in any medical book as one of the symptoms of both ear & sinus infections. If you get the gook out of your sinuses & Eustachian tubes the dizziness should go away. Here is a mothod I posted on the plugged ear thread that will help clean your sinuses & Eustachian tubes:

The idea is to snuff salt water up the nose to clean out the sinuses & reduce any possible swelling. The Eustachian tubes are connected to the back of the sinuses-that's where the fluid she is feeling is. If the sinuses are clogged w/goop or swollen the Eustachian tubes can't drain. Try mixing 1/4 teas sea salt w/1 cup warm water. Pour some into the palm of the hand, plug one nostril & snuff the salt water up the other nostril into the sinuses. Repeat. When you work your way through the gook in the sinuses the salt water ends up in the back of your throat & you spit it out. Repeat on each side several times. She will gag & it is not a pleasant treatment but it works to clear the sinuses. Maybe this will help, I hope it does.

You can do this as often as you need to. It's only salt water, it's not going to hurt you. Basically you are washing out your sinuses.

You could try sinus points to help open your sinuses.  I do this occasionally and it give some relief.  I've never tried the pressure point on the hands or feet, but I've used the ones on the face with good results.

Thank you all for bearing with me on my updates about how my sinusitis is doing! You are so kind and helpful!

An Intersting Observation:

Yesterday, things seemed to loosen up a bit in my tightly congested sinuses. In fact, I was able to taste just the tiniest bit AND I was so proud that I was finally able to get a quarter size glob of yellow/green goo out of my sinuses! Gross, yes!  Tongue But it was such a relief. The weird thing is though... that the past two nights as I've slept my mouth has been extra dry and beginning this morning, ALL I CAN TASTE/SMELL IS BLEACH! What is that??? I've only taken Tylenol and the homepathic remedy (but I've been taking that for 2 weeks and this weird taste just started today). My mom said she had a similar experience and she thought that the goo in the sinuses sometimes just had that yucky taste. Any ideas?

All week, my nose has been running and I've been able to get some brownish mucous out of my throat. Yesterday, however, my LEFT nostril was producing yellow/green thicker mucous, while my right one continued to produce the clear/white mucous. Very strange. I've blowed very hard to try and get stuff out- so hard that this morning I have a sore muscle in my neck. Last night, I started getting congested again and by morning, my nose was plugged again. I've eaten a raw clove of garlic and things have loosened a bit- but upon waking, my right nostril has been bleeding when I blow (blood mixed in with the mucous) and onec there was even a small blood clot that came out when I blowed. Now, as I am  trying to "hock" (for lack of better words) the junk out from my throat, it has blood in it as well! The last time it had a small blood clot. This is a bit frightening to be as I've never gotten blood from my throat before. Any ideas on WHY this sould be happening?

I think I discovered the cause of the bleach taste. I stopped the homeopathic sinus remedy for a day and the taste subsided. When Is tarted back, it returned. I don't understand why it took nearly two weeks to experience the taste, but maybe it took that long to build up. They're little melty tablets placed under the tongue.

Any ideas on the blood in the mucous would be greatly appreciated.

Your blowing & hocking so much & so hard that you broke a couple of small blood vessels- it happens a lot & it's no big deal. The gook your hocking up is from your nose so when you break a vessel in your nose so of the blood ends up in your throat. Also you may have broken a blood vessel in your throat by hocking too hard or too often. Is it too dry in your house? Dry air will lead to broken vessels in the nose. Instead of blowing & hocking so hard, do the sinus wash that I posted in my last post on this thread. Also check the link for Plugged Ears that is in the same post. If you wash your sinuses it will wash out a lot of the gook & thin down what's left. You can do it as often as you need to & it is much easier on your nose & throat than hard blowing & hocking.

It's completely normal for the gook in one nostril to be different than the other, just think about it, sometimes you get a stuffy nose only on one side. You said that the gook on the left is thicker, it's just taking longer to drain, that's all. HTH Blessings ~herbalmom
