Wendy, check out this thread:

http://www.welltellme.com/discuss/index.php/topic,22257.0.html

The guy who developed this philosophy of physical therapy says that all of us are predominately using the right side of our bodies.  From supporting our weight, to writing tasks, and even chewing.  This overuse of one side results in the muscles pulling the spine out of alignment, and it gets worse with age.  Different people experience different levels and areas of pain.  It has really helped me to re-align without ever going to a chiropractor.  My pain went away within a very short period of time after I started trying some of the suggestions.

wlwest,

Since your symptoms started at such a young age, my guess would be juvenile arthritis or Lyme's disease. The fact that you have flare ups makes me think of allergies.
Do you also have other fibro. symptoms?  Tingling sensations, sleeping problems, breathing difficulties, muscle pain?

I think that's what the aches may be, muscle pain?  I don't think it's really the joints.  I have allergies, esp around barns, hay, trees, etc..  I do have trouble sleeping, deep sleep.  I'm not sure what you mean by tingling, I do have times where my legs will go numb.  And I've had a few incidents when I've had to jump out of bed and completely fell on the floor, my legs were completely numb, and it took a few minutes and I had those pins and needles.

The worst pain is the legs, the low, lower back.  But, now it's hurting also in the spine, and neck, well all over. Tongue

Oh, and hi_itsgwen, I did check the site out, but couldn't really find anything to do, no exercises?

(Ok, I still don't know how to quote!)

Anyway, I've been reading and reading over the leaky gut stuff.  I know I have all that, but it's so overwhelming to start that diet.

Hi everyone,  I just got back from a 2 1/2 hour rheumatology appt.  Very thorough.  He feels I have fibromyalgia.  So, welltellme is the first place I run!  My symptoms are disturbed sleep, and painful joints (I tested tender on 16 out of 18 points).  I battle the sleepiness with too much coffee Embarrassed  I know it's gotta go.  Sad   I'll be visiting here often to see where I should begin with dietary changes and supplements.
Blessings,
Lisa

Per moderator's request to move  Cheesy

What I'm about to tell you is NOT to minimize the pain (because I'm not) but it's just to give you insight into the medical community.  My BIL is a doctor that leans a smidgen natural.  In discussions with other health care providers and in his own practice there is a general consensus that there is no such thing as fibromyalgia.  That is what they tell patients they have when a doctor cannot figure out what else it is.  It is not a diagnosis, it is a symptom.  But since most patients don't want to hear that they give it a name and send people on their way knowing they will do nothing to fix it.  That is the standard.  Obviously, people here have a different view (trying to find the cause not treat the symptom).  I'm simply telling you this because your pain is not the problem, it's the symptom.  The problem is you have severe internal inflammation and you need to find out why.  My BIL also said that *most* people who are diagnosed with fibromyalgia are really just suffering from severe food/environmental allergies and candida.  That all comes from an MD.

No one thinks they have internal inflammation.  That's pretty standard.  But anyone with pain has internal inflammation.

All that to say, I would get your SED rate tested, the ELISA done and perhaps do a candida diet for 3-6 months.

Wanted to post this GREAT article here too, since it's somewhat specific to the yeast/fibromyalgia connection.

Discuss heavy metal toxicity with your healthcare professional before receiving any diagnosis or treatment for a serious chronic condition.

http://www.jigsawhealth.com/resources/fibromyalgia-dietary

Reading lots about the fibromyalgia/mercury link.  Of course there isn't many studies or concrete research out there.  DH and I are thinking that heavy metal testing is in order.

Also, from the above link.

Exercise is crucial for fibromyalgia sufferers. You may not want to move around at all due to chronic, widespread pain; however, gentle stretching exercises actually help manage pain effectively. Examples of light exercise include yoga, light aerobics, gentle walking, and water aerobics. The key to help relieve pain is to not over-exert yourself with strenuous activity, but instead incorporate light exercise into your daily lifestyle.

Ordering a stretching video at amazon and picked up a leslie sansone video a few days ago.  It's funny to me now, but I have always loved stretching and walking and felt so good doing it but would get this nagging voice telling me that I should be doing something more vigorous (hubby always wanted me cut too so would push me a wee bit Tongue) Then I would try to do something intensive and pay for it in soreness and would just not do anything.  Roll Eyes

It appears that  low melatonin levels are common with people who have fibromyalgia.  Supplemental melatonin can make a huge difference in pain levels and other areas as well.  Here's a study from pub med.

Here's a couple great testimonies from women who had FM and after getting food allergens diagnosed and getting chemicals out of their life were totally better, unless exposed to chemicals, then they regressed.  I totally have chemical sensitivities too, so this is worth looking into!

Quote
In the past I never would have believed my "FM symptoms" were triggered by chemicals, but now when I get near the slightest amount, I fall, virtually, and immediately back into the muscle knots, pain, and trigger points, until I remove or get away from the offending chemical(s). There are sacrifices to be made for feeling healthy again. For me they are well worth it.

I'm doing the 7-day Detox Miracle as they specifically recommend it for fibromyalgia among other illnesses as long as there is no liver impairment or disease.  They authors write that after completing the detoxification program you can begin to rule out one or more causes of fibromyalgia:

Food allergies
Candida
Toxic metals: mercury being to most common
Adrenal deficiency
Loss of sleep
Depression
Vitamin and mineral deficiency
DHEA insufficiency
Intestinal microflora imbalance
Protein deficiency
Emotional trauma

They have found amazing results from using intravenous magnesium therapy and recommend having a lab measure levels using a whole blood elemental analysis if possible.

These supplements are recommend for fibromyalgia:

Magnesium malate with potassium/magnesium aspartate to get rid of lactic acid: 300 mg twice per day

Epsom salt baths

Selenium: 100 to 250 a day with vitamin E

Pantothenic acid: 500 mg twice per day

Licorice root: 1/4 tsp. per day of solid extract (watch for increased blood pressure)

Here's the 7-Day Detox Miracle WTM thread:

I'm also doing this Vitamin C / Ascorbic Acid Flush

This is really interesting...according to the authors of the 7-Day Detox Miracle they definitely see a connection of toxicity and firbromyalgia and seem to confirm the chemical sensitivity connection. But they suggest that detoxifying is really the best treatment to improve chemical sensitivities and fibromyalgia.

Quote
A recent study showed that patients with diagnoses of chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome could not be distinguished on the basis of symptoms.  The study indicates that these are not separate diseases but different forms of the same illness.  These poorly differentiated disorders are probably caused by many environmental factors.

Several studies indicate that chemical toxicity and immune-system breakdown provoke the disorders.  At our clinic, may patients ask whether a treatment for fibromayalgia and chronic fatigue exists.  Detoxification therapy has been shown to be effective and stands out as one oft he only coherent approaches to healing people with these debilitating health problems.  We are convinced that these mysterious disorders are indications that the stress of environmental toxins is more than some people can bear.

Some of the things I'm learning that can be certain ppl have a more difficult time detoxifying the chemicals we are faced with is nutrient deficiency and amalgam fillings.  Both of these really mess with the body's natural ability to detoxify.

I was wondering if anyone has had any luck treating their fibro symptoms with diatomacious earth.  I haven't been to the dr. ( I won't take all the meds anyway) but my Mom has it and I test positive for almost all the painful points on my body.  Very bad body aches...think I am sleeping well but wake up tired in the morning so probably not.  Mostly just really tired and body aches.  Bad reaction to MSG (we eat chinese once in a while) within 2 hrs or so, I can't hardly move....I started taking the DE and honestly I don't hurt hardly at all any more...if I miss if for 3 or 4 days, because I get lazy, I have a full blown flare up.  I have a friend that has Lupus and has had amazing results with the DE...Just wondering if anyone else has had the same results or if I am crazy.

That's very interesting.  Thanks for sharing! DE internally is for parasites, etc. rather than a source of nutrition, right?  If symptoms return after a few day of being of DE, I wonder if you can do a more permanent removal of pathogens and then take probiotics as a preventative measure rather than just keep them at bay? I've heard of many different treatments, for many different causes, putting fibromyalgia into remission. Personally, I'm ruling things out in this order:

focusing on boosting the immune system
cleansing to remove internal toxins (they suppress the immune system)
dx and removing food allergies
treating possible gut or whole body dybosis (diflucan for candida and other herbs for other "bugs" followed by pro-biotics and may test for Lyme's)
mercury filing removal and chelation ~ A big, Lord willing!

Until I have completed my this list I'm doing exercise and nutritional supplements and melatonin (sleep aid) to maintain.

Thanks again for sharing!

Just wanted to share these must read articles!

Hopefully, after reading this essay, you will have a real understanding of the nature of this condition and its root cause, protein deficiency. A quick summary: When the body becomes unable to digest food properly, it becomes protein deficient and therefore open to all kinds of disease conditions. Until this deficiency is corrected, the body will continue to tend toward illness, rather than health because our body uses the amino acids digested from food to make thousands of different proteins to keep it healthy.

Fibromyalgia Mercury Wars
http://searchwarp.com/swa2576.htm

Hubby and I are pretty sure we need to get mercury out...besides the physical stuff, I've got brains stuff going on too that is just not right and scary! I know ppl who have felt so awesome when taking certain protein shakes and I believe that adequate protein intake and being able to DIGEST protein is so critical to healing and health. Most people have low levels of HCl to one degree or another and HCl is the most critical factor in protein digestion.
