I've been noticing my jean clothing are starting to look really worn. Is it because i've hung them out some or is the homemade soap making them that way? I hope not because i've had great success with the soap. I do use oxyclean prespray on my stains and i LOVE it. I lnow the commercial soaps have anti fade chemicals in them so that's why i had to wonder if the homemade detergent might be the problem............ any ideas?

If you have a place to hang them out of the sun (under a porch roof etc.) that sometimes helps.  A friend of mine always tells me "never hang darks in the sun, they fade" and I guess that's true, if you hang whites in the sun, they get whiter.  Just a thought.

I turn dark and denim items wrong side out to wash and dry them.  It helps them keep their color longer.

Well, I've been using HB's laundry soap for 2-3 months now. I like that it is cheaper, and that it is phosphate free, etc... however, it is not getting my yucky summer dishclothes and bath towels clean and fresh... so I have bought some detergent that I use just for my towel load. I think I will run everything through a detergent load once in a while to keep things bright and fresh, using the homemade stuff most of the time. It is not the fact that the store bought stuff has detergent that bothers me (there is such a thing as a plant derived, "natural" dertergent), it's all the other stuff. I've had to go back to dishwasher detergent for now, and I even used regular shampoo yesterday. I think I will once in awhile, just to get all the soap scum out of my hair, and give it some shine. Maybe someday we'll have soft water, and I can use all soaps again.

dara,
I've had trouble getting my hair clean after extended use of "natural" shampoo. I just read on here somewhere and have had great success using baking soda and vinegar. I use about 1T of baking soda mixed with a little water. Rub that in well and pour 1T vinegar in 1/2 cup water over. It foams up really well and I usually let it set a minute before rinsing. This works really well to get out all the grease and soap scum. My hair is so thin I only do this every week or so. I need a little build up so I have some body Wink

I try to stay on top of the sour cloths, but when I miss it, I presoaked my nasty dishcloths in a little bit of extra borax right in the wash.  This usually does the trick, but when it doesn't, I do cheat with bleach, but only every once in awhile.  Detergent never got that smell out for me either.  I had to cheat with bleach every now and again then too, but this was just my experience.  I know that bleach is bad, but I really love the smell it leaves on my clothes.  *snicker*

I was taught that the last step to washing the dishes was to wash your dishrag out with soap and fresh waterthen hang it up to dry. Hey, this family I was with had only two rags. (another country)

Me too, but I have a husband and three children and if the dishrag falls into the sink, that's where it stays until I find it several dishes later.   Undecided

I like the laundry soap, but I noticed that it worked best when it was freshly made, still warm and had no "boogers" in it.  Once the Boogers started forming it just didn't seem to get the clothes very clean.  So here was my solution.  Yesterday before the load I simply poured the cup of soap into a small sauce pan and turned it on medium heat until it was completely melted and clear. This took about 5 minutes or so. There  was  a skimming of bubbles on top but no buggers.  Then I poured that hot soap directly into the washer that was filling up with water. The result- clean clothes.  I also used fels naptha for stain remover on boys and hubby's dirty jeans and sometimes add a little extra borax or washing soda for really dirty loads.   As for getting alot of  grease out, try hot water and soap directly on your grease spots.  As long as your hot water isn't too hot you may be able to wash some things in it and get them cleaner than in warm or cold water.

At one point I somewhere read about a product that could mayhaps get the stink of mechanics grease, oil, and diesel fuel out of the clothes.  I searched and cant find where that was (probably bad spelling on my part).  I think it was called D'Limone or somthing like that.  Does anyone remember where it is?  Has anyone used it?  Thanks in advance!!!

I just made my soap & have done 4 loads so far. I really like the way it works. I found the washing soda at my neighborhood grocery (not Walmart). I also used borax, and I think the droplets of soap left after stirring helped kill some of the crickets in our basement! That's a plus! :

I have a front-loader, so I first used 1/2 cup. I gradually added more to the loads and found that 1 1/2- 2 cups worked better. I didn't have any smelly rags (which I usually had with regular detergent), but everything just smelled like clothes. Has anyone found anything that actually leaves the clothes with a good scent?

Also, when you use vinegar as a softener, do your clothes smell like vinegar after the wash?

I've used both white and acv and neither leaves a lingering odor that I'm aware of.  My clothes smell very neutral.

I am using two cups of vinegar and my towels, after hanging them to dry, are still as scratchy and stiff as a brillo pad.  I broke down and bought some Snuggle.  Any other fabric softener suggestions?  Huh

Fabric Softener suggestion (from a book): Add 1-2 c. glycerine to a gallon of pure water, and add a cup of the mixture to the wash load for softer clothes.
I haven't tried this, but I read it, and you asked about it... so let us know if you try it and if it works!

I am not Rebekah Cheesy but Cool I use only baking soda in my laundry soap recipe and I think it works fine. I do pretreat stains (rub with a wet bar of soap) and presoak my boys filthy clothes to help get them clean in one wash. I also use vinegar in my rinse water. I also started adding GSC and that helps with rancid towels and such. Hope this helps... until Rebekah gets here Grin

What do you use for presoak? How much GSC do you use, & do you mix it in the laundry soap?

I am having trouble with stains in toddlers' clothes, stinky pit smell, & hubby's stinky/sweaty work clothes.

Also, has anyone figured out a way for the clothes to keep a good fragrance after drying?

Lots of questions!! Smiley Thanks!

Thanks for answering Boysmama  Smiley  Yes, I make it without Borax. I use two bars of soap, one is made with lye (amish friend makes the soap) and the other is Ivory. I use 1 1/2 cup of Baking Soda. When the water is about 100 degrees, I add two or three droppers of Grapefruit  Seed Crush to the soap mix, and whatever essential oil I want. Lavender helps to kill bacteria as well, and smells great even after the heat of the dryer. When washing clothes, if I have stinky or really dirty clothes, I put in 2 full cups of detergent. This usual, as my family is fairly active. If I have sheets or towels that got peepeed on, I set the wash cycle back to give it double time. I use hot water.
Everything smells clean to me. Before I began adding the GSC, I noticed the old dungy smell, but not since adding GSC.

Rebekah pretty much covered it all... for presoak I just fill the washer with warm water and let it set awhile to loosen the dirt. I wash all dirty/ stinky stuff in warm water because it does seem to get the clothes cleaner. My water is really really hot so warm for me is probably hot for most of you. And like she said the GSC makes all the difference. Sometimes I'll rub the armpit area with extra soap if it has set awhile and is really rancid. I am really stingy with my essential oils- only have lavendar (and GSE)- and have not tried for "scented" clothes yet.I'm just happy  that they smell neutral Grin

I went to a health food store today to prepare for my first homeade laundry "stuff" and all they had was Grapeseed Oil, was wondering if that is the same as the GSC and how many drops of the Lavender should I put in my laundry detergent. Thanks! Roll Eyes

I don't think that grapeseed oil would work the same. I know for sure that it is different stuff from grapefruit seed extract/crush. Grapeseed oil is an actual oil from grapes you can use as a cooking oil whereas the grapefruit seed extract from grapefruit is very bitter and more down the essential oils line. Beeyoutiful sells it as grapefruit seed crush which has some pulp extract in it too, but I find it works just as well as grapefruit seed extract and is cheaper per ounce.

Okay....here I go again with yet another silly question (or two or three).

We currently use unscented soap because our youngest son has eczema (at least that's what we were told)...although, Praise God...he is growing out of it!

question 1 - Do you use a special pot to make this soap?  I'm not sure I have one big enough to hold 4.5 gallons of water...that's a lot of water!!!

question 2 - How do you grate the soap?  Do you use a hand-help cheese grater?  Do you leave it out of it's package for several days to 'dry out'?

question 3 - If adding GSC and/or essential oil, do you think this would have an adverse affect on our son's skin?

question 4 - I have a front loader..so if I used ACV has a 'softener' how much would I pour into the softener dispenser?

question 5 - Does this get your whites white?  We use bleach with our whites....I think mainly because my mom did...and I don't seem to notice that our whites are ever 'store bought' white after the first couple of washings...especially if the kids go outside without their shoes...and that's just plain old dirt..not red clay or anything like that here.

Okay, so that was more than one or two questions.

Thanks in advance,
Camille

I'm not an expert yet, but I just made my first batch of soap and washed a load and its looking great. I just used a regular sauce pan and cut up the soap into chunks, covered it with water and lid and let it melt! It worked fairly quickly. I didn't have a 5 gallon bucket so instead I filled about a five gallon plastic trash can I cleaned out and mixed everything in it and then poured half into my old detergent bottle, which is the big one with the dispenser at the end (walmart has 'em) I did add a couple drops of lavender and it smelled wonderful...looked like the real stuff! Meanwhile I still have half a trash can of detergent to put away....hmmm! Hope this helps!

I wondered if anyone else has had this problem with the laundry soap.  I have noticed a dirty soap scum ring around my washer where the water level ends.  It's fairly easy to clean off with baking soda, but I wondered if anyone else had noticed this as well.  I use the borax and washing soda combination and Ivory soap.

By the way, it works great and has saved us soooooo much money!  I'm so pleased with it!  Thanks for the recipe!
