I have noticed a dirty soap scum ring around my washer where the water level ends.
This is why I use the downy ball with vinegar.

question 1 - Do you use a special pot to make this soap?  I'm not sure I have one big enough to hold 4.5 gallons of water...that's a lot of water!!!
I heat the soap in a pan with one quart of water, then add my borax and washing powder until dissolved.  I heat another 2 gallons in my canning pot.  I dump the melted soap and the 2 heated gallons of water into my bucket and stir well.  The rest I just fill from the tap, one gallon at a time, stirring well as I add the water, so the cooling of the water doesn't cause my soap mixture to chunk or booger up.

Quote
question 2 - How do you grate the soap?  Do you use a hand-help cheese grater?
You can use a cheese grater, a food processor or a knife.  The smaller the chunks the faster your soap will dissolve.

Quote
Do you leave it out of it's package for several days to 'dry out'?
no, the soap chops and grates very easily right out of the package (easier than cheese even).

Quote
question 3 - If adding GSC and/or essential oil, do you think this would have an adverse affect on our son's skin?
I don't know of any side effects listed of GSC.  It's a semi-natural broad spectrum antibiotic.

Quote
question 4 - I have a front loader..so if I used ACV has a 'softener' how much would I pour into the softener dispenser?
I don't know, but I do know there are a couple of others with front loaders around here.  I'm sure they can help with this one.

Quote
question 5 - Does this get your whites white?  We use bleach with our whites....I think mainly because my mom did...and I don't seem to notice that our whites are ever 'store bought' white after the first couple of washings...especially if the kids go outside without their shoes...and that's just plain old dirt..not red clay or anything like that here.
I don't really know.  We don't where alot of whites and I've never been very picky about dingy whites because bleach eats the clothes and they fall apart, but I do know that nothing I've ever tried in the past will get cat pee out of anything and every time the cat had an "accident" on a piece of clothing, we just threw it in the burn pile.  With this soap, I can just throw it in the wash and it comes out smelling just as clean as it did before the cat decided to do her business on it.   Grin  I've also noticed it takes more of the food off the babies clothes than it ever did before with a lot less pre-treating.

Okay....here I go again with yet another silly question (or two or three).

question 2 - How do you grate the soap?  Do you use a hand-help cheese grater?  Do you leave it out of it's package for several days to 'dry out'?

--I use a handheld cheese grater
Quote
question 4 - I have a front loader..so if I used ACV has a 'softener' how much would I pour into the softener dispenser?

--I've tried different amounts, & I think that about half of the dispenser is probably enough. I only had one time where my clothes came out still smelling a little like vinegar & don't know if I filled the dispenser or if there was some other problem. I haven't had that happen since I've been filling the dispenser about halfway. I don't think it will hurt to try a little more or less, since it's just vinegar & you could always run another rinse.

Okay, I made some soap today..so we'll see how it goes.

I used the recipe someone recommended from thefamilyhomestead.com because it was a smaller batch.

The recipe she uses is:

1 bar Ivory (or 1/3 bar of fels naptha)
1/2 cup borax
1/2 cup washing soda

and 2 gallons of water

She says to grate soap and add to 6 cups water, heat until soap is melted.  Meanwhile, make sure you have 4 cups hot water ready to use while the soap is melting.  When the soap is completely melted, add the borax and soda.  (She said to use the washing soda, not baking soda). Stir until soda/borax is dissolved then remove from heat.  Put 4 cups hot water into bucket then add soap mixture and stir.  Then add 1 gallon + 6 cups water and stir.  Let sit for 24 hours and it will gel.  She says you can add 1/2 to 1 oz. essential oil of your choice if you choose. (I used lavender in mine...next time I may not because I got to thinking we use dye and perfume free right now because of my youngest son...not sure why I didn't think that the essential oil would be the 'perfume' part.  Eh, live and learn.)

She has a page on her site which has pictures of the step-by-step process.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Blessings,
Camille

PS - I also added some GSC to mine .... not real sure how much.

Hi (again)...

Just went to the nels naptha website and here are some recipes they have listed there:

First Recipe: 3 Pints Water 1/3 bar Fels Naptha Soap, grated 1/2 cup Washing Soda (Arm and Hammer, NOT baking soda though!!) 1/2 cup 20 Mule Team Borax 2 Gallon bucket to mix it in 1 Quart hot water Hot Water Mix Fels Naptha soap in a saucepan with 3 pints hot water and heat on low until dissolved. Stir in Washing Soda and Borax. Stir until thickened, and remove from heat. Add 1 Quart Hot Water to 2 gallon Bucket. Add soap mixture, and mix well. Fill bucket with hot water, and mix well. Set aside for 24 hours, or until mixture thickens. Use 1/2 cup of mixture per load.

Second Recipe: 1 cup grated Fels Naptha Soap 1/2 cup Washing Soda (Arm and Hammer again) 1/2 cup Borax (20 mule team Borax) 2 Tablespoons Glycerin 2 cups water Mix first three ingredients together, than add glycerin and water. Use 1/2 to 3/4 cup per load. This one works best in cold or warm water.

Third Recipe: Water 1 bar grated Fels Naptha soap 5 gallon bucket 1 cup washing soda (Again, Arm and Hammer) 4 1/2 gallons water Put grated Fels Naptha in saucepan and cover with water. Heat on low until dissolved. Fill bucket with hot water and add soap. Stir to combine. Add 1 cup washing soda and mix well. As it cools, it will thicken. May be used immediately. Use 1- 2 cups per load.

Powdered Laundry Detergent 1 cup grated Fels Naptha Soap 1/2 cup washing soda 1/2 cup 20 mule team borax Mix and store in airtight container or bag. For light loads, use 2 tablespoon. For heavy loads, use 3 tablespoons.

Let me know if anyone else uses one of the above and if you have  preference.

Thanks - Camille

These are all very similar.  I use 2 bars Ivory, 1 cup borax, 1 cup washing powder and 5 gallons hot water.  I like it very much.  The soap is doubled, but for the price of a bar of soap, I get a bit more concentrated soap which means I don't have to use as much per load and I don't have to make it as often.

HB...

Are all 5 gallons of your water hot?  Do you add any essential oil or GSC..if so how much?  One more thing, do you let it sit for 24 hours before using?  I read on several of these that people continually stirred theirs during 'cool down', but the one I used only had about 10 cups of hot water, the rest was room temp and she didn't say anything about continual stirring.  What do you think?

I'll let you know how mine turns out tomorrow.  Oh...any reason why I couldn't transfer it into my old laundry detergent container with the cool guy spout on the bottom?

Thanks - C.

I keep 1 gallon of my homemade laundry soap handy next to the washer in a washed out milk jug!  This works great, as it is super easy to pour out and it is a manageable size!

I think I'll spend money (since this is so cheap) on buying more expensive soap that has a more natural list of ingredients and a natural scent. The white Ivory that I used (one bar) is just too toxic smelling for me. The second bar was a natural olive oil and rosemary bar. It smelled great.

Rebekah

Rebekah...Did you ever try this with a different type of soap?  Let me know what other brands you are thinking of, cause I agree on the Ivory smell.  I bought a bar of Nel Naphath today, and they list all of their ingredients...at least not to my understanding.

I made mine today and it is not so much a liquid as it is a gel...is this what you got when you made yours?

Thanks - Camille

Okay...soap is all done, and first load is going in shortly.  My soap turned out sort of 'gloopy'.  It has the consistency of tapioca pudding (or so my daughter said)...is this right?  I'm going to use it, and if it's not, hopefully the next batch will be better with tips from you all.

Thanks again for the fabulous idea.

PS - I made the 'bathroom cleaner' from another thread and love it!!!  I don't know that our bathroom counter ever shined the way it does now!!!  So much for those 'scrubbing bubbles!'

Mine came out in more of a gel, also. I do like how it works. It actually did a better job of getting stinky rags smelling clean than the regular detergent I had.  Smiley I just got my GSC & am really excited about trying it. I am almost ready to make another batch. Last time I used a bar of Kiss My Face soap & a bar of Kirk's Coco Castile, borax, washing soda, & added essential oils before loading washer. I think I'll try different soaps this time, like Fels Naptha & the Castile.

Well, I spent some time this morning cutting and pasting all of your recipes and troubleshooting tips for homemade laundry soap...put it in a Word document and printed it out (5 pages).  After studying it and highlighting sections, I went shopping!  Thanks to whoever wrote that their local grocery store had washing soda!  Ours, 1 mile down the road in Booneyville U.P., had it all!   Shocked Shocked  Washing soda, borax, fels naptha and the Kirk's coco castile soap--what a find!  Brewed up a batch w/ 3 pots and a cheese grater and I'm babysitting it now as I type, stirring occasionally as it cools.  Can't wait to try it out....Camille's powder recipe is next on my list.  Thanks everyone! Hey Jen...

How exciting for you!!!  Let me know if yours turned into a 'smooth liquid' or chunky.  Mine is sort of chunky, but seems to work great.  I've not tried the powder.  The washer we have now...if I remember correctly..said that liquid detergents worked best, so I've not tried the powder recipe.  Let me know if that works.  I did make up the 'All Purpose Household Cleaner' or something like that, and have been using it exclusively.  It called for tea tree oil, which my family is saying they don't like the scent of much, but it works wonders!!!  Next time we go shopping, I'm going to take the lot of them and they can smell all the essential oils to their hearts content!

Happy laundering  Tongue

Hi, Camille!  Cheesy  Thanks for the tips and recipes...I made this batch first, Tuesday night:

Quote
1 bar Ivory (or 1/3 bar of fels naphtha)--I used Kirk's coco castile

I grated it w/ a hand grater easily in small curls (my boys helped Cheesy),and it melted quickly.  Whole process: less than 30 minutes.  Used 3 pots--2 for hot water and one for the soap ingredients.  Had a 5 gallon bucket for mixing and my wooden spoon was long enough since it was a smaller batch.  Stirred it on and off in the evening and went to bed.  It didn't gel, per se, but there aren't floaties.   Cheesy  I stir it to keep it well blended and it bubbles.  Haven't used it yet, though--smells good.   No essential oils added yet....I have lavender and lemon.  I had some old OUR detergent containers and filled them up...also had an old squeeze bottle from dishsoap for treating stains.

Then I made this one:

Quote
Powdered Laundry Detergent 1 cup grated Fels Naphtha Soap 1/2 cup washing soda 1/2 cup 20 mule team borax Mix and store in airtight container or bag. For light loads, use 2 tablespoon. For heavy loads, use 3 tablespoons.

I tried my first load of walk, a half load of dirty towels and wash cloths w/ this powdered kind--using a little less than 1/4 cup, figuring it approximated 3 T...they were stinky.  Roll Eyes  The water didn't bubble when agitated, but smelled nice!   I used a large grater for the Fels and was worried that it wouldn't dissolve, but it did in hot water w/ my inaugural load.

I'll try and figure out my costs sometime.  It was simple.  Now to see if they work!  The OUR detergent I had been using for years (recommended by Amish) had worked great on grass stains, manure smells, mustard, etc.  Tough act to follow!

Look forward to others' experiences and input! Wink

Glad to hear it went well!  I used Ivory the first time with the soap, but Ivory has such a strong scent.  We are going to try to the Fels next time.  I have some castille soap now, also, but my word there are so many choices I don't know what's what with that soap..lol.

Have a great day!

Good day to you, Camille!   Cheesy

The powder soap cleaned my dirty load well, and they smell very fresh and clean.  Hooray!   Grin Grin Grin Grin

Will be trying the liquid w/i the next 24 hours...just "waiting" for a cold load to accumulate.  LOL

The bucket of Borax water that HB suggested has found its way into my basement.  It is filling up quickly w/ stinkies waiting for wash day!  GREAT idea!

I love this site!  Can't wait to hear your results.  I like the mild scent of the Kirk's.  Ivory is too strong smelling for me, too.  Kirk's was detergent-free, I think.  Fels has some perfumes in it, I noticed.  Reminds me of Dial soap, which makes sense, given they share manufacturers! I may use it for stain cleaner (the little bit that's left) after using most of the bar in the powder batch--I'll save that for my "hot" load.   Cheesy

Hey Jen...

Are you rinsing with ACV?  We started that too, and we really like it.  My daughter (oldest) doesn't care for the smell of ACV, so we tried white (she is our main laundress), but that didn't work as well she feels.  None of the clothes smelled like vinegar out of the dryer...it was just the putting it in that she didn't like.  Plus, it made the laundry room smell like ACV during the wash time (which she didn't like).  Overall though..it is fantastic!

Keep me posted! Camille

Camille-

No, I haven't tried vinegar in the rise, yet.  I don't have a Downey ball, which I know I don't need, but I'm not with it enough to run down at the right time to add vinegar to
the rinse water.   Roll Eyes

I haven't noticed a real stiffness to my clothes...is that a main reason for the vinegar?  Or to make it more clean smelling/white?  I dry mine in the basement, draped on the lines while our wood stove dries them.  That makes them a bit stiff, for sure, but it saves on our dryer/electric bill.   Smiley  I'm glad that I can just dry them w/o clothes pins--it's faster and the children can pull them down when dry w/o breaking pins.     Grin  Does it affect the clothes at all when they're ironed, the vinegar?

Laundering is a blast these days!  I can't wait to try the liquid!   Cheesy  Now, what to use the extra money saved for....HuhHuh   Wink

I haven't tried the powder, but I've been using the liquid for three weeks now. I love it! I'm making my five gallons right now with the Ivory and Aloe, it smells awesome so I can't wait to see how it makes my clothes smell. I do the vinegar rinse, but since I can't ever remember to put in the rinse cycle I just put it in when I start the wash, seems to work the same as far as my hubby's jeans not being stiff, and since the soap doesn't lather like store detergent I've not worried about making sure the soap is rinsed out. Oh and I tend to use lots of lavender, makes my whole house smell wonderful when I'm doing laundry.

I recently shared the recipe with a missionary family with nine kids! She liked it especially since she can't get laundry detergent in the Dominican Republic where their at!

The vinegar is for softening purposes and to get all the soap residue off the clothes.  We dry everything on the line in the sun (we have lots of sun  Cool ) and the clothes still get a little stiff if we don't take them down as soon as they are dry.  I do notice that the vinegar does get all the soap out though, DH has slight skin allergies and since we started making our own laundry soap and adding vinegar to the rinse water----NO PROBLEMS!!!  We have to pre-scrub socks and boys clothes, but I did that anyway.  We love the price!  You can't beat it.

Dittos on the price!!! I bought everything but the oils for about ten bucks at Sams Club and I have sooo much stuff it'll last me a good while.

I have skin allergies also and have noticed a difference too, but mostly with the vinegar/lavender/GSC house cleaner, because my hands haven't cracked or dried out in two weeks. Such a relief! I used to have to bathe my hands in lotion everytime I did the dishes, bathroom ect.

How long is "too long" for the borax bucket?   Roll Eyes  My bucket's filling up faster than I expected!  A day?
