I'm sure you will get some good tips here, but I have 2 things we do around here for oral/throat infections:

Pineapple seems to help with the pain at individual sores.  I feed it to them fresh or canned & they also drink the juice.  (also increases Vit C & I suspect the acid in it 'zaps' the site a bit too...)

Salt water rinse & gargle also reduces the pain & inflamation for us.  I 'make' them do it every other hour... or more often if I can.  Mine aren't very skilled at this and it's messy at best. (gag*splutter*splash)

There are also white spots (sort of looks like a white head) under her tongue (one), on her gum (back behind the last molar), and two on her bottom lip (like maybe cold sores or mouth ulcers).  Also, there's a lot of white stuff on her tongue.

The white spots sound like fever blisters.  They are just that--little sores that appear when one has a fever.  I used to get them at night after my braces were tightened.  Not sure why we get them, but they go away on their own.  I just usually numb them with whatever I have on hand if they get uncomfortable.

The white tongue sounds like thrush or a sign of systemic yeast.  I would consider getting her on an anti-yeast regimin.  Tummy Tuneup could be helpful at fighting the germs causing the tonsillitus as well.  Treating the yeast could also serve to help her from getting sick as often or as severely in the future as candida severely compromises the immune system.

As far as the tonsillitis goes, I would read back through this thread and the cough and cold thread for more ideas on what to do to boost her immune system, offer comfort for the sore throat and get her well.

Last week, my daughter had what I think may have been strep (started off with vomiting, then sore throat & fever, and sores in mouth/tonsils, and white stuff on tongue).  This week, my son has it...same exact symptoms, except that he also has very red & very swollen gums that hurt & bleed really bad when I brush them even gently.  Could this also be a symptom of strep, or is it something else or something more serious?

I am so glad you posted this, because I have almost exactly the same thing.  Although my gums aren't sore, I believe I GOT this when I really cleaned my mouth out.  Everything is now gone (fever, vomiting, etc) except sore throat and my lymphnodes in my neck are so swollen, I can barely swallow.  I've had this non-stop for 9 days.  I have been taking vitamins and supplements in copious amounts, using goot and garlic poultices on my neck, eating raw garlic, spraying Sovreign Silver in my mouth, doing detox baths.  Last night my throat/neck were in so much pain that I made a drink of about 1/2 oz of turmeric powder (all I had) and 1 1/2 tsp ginger powder in hot water.  I drank this over about 1/2 an hour and it helped the inflammation so that I slept through the night.  Although I am going to the doc tomorrow, I am wondering the same thing...  How is this connected with my mouth?  Can I get sick from some kind of mouth bacteria that was stirred up a lot when I really cleaned my mouth?  I have been gargling with salt water constantly, as well, so I'm wondering if the bacteria could be under my teeth, since I keep my teeth clean?

One more question - what can I do to help him?  I've started having him swish around with salt water.  I also got him to swish with some garlic water...I added a bit of vinegar, & honey to taste.  I can't get him to take any garlic or honey or drink any teas (he's very picky!), and he won't try the gummy echinacea vitamins that I have.  It seems like the only thing he's willing to do is swish...because he doesn't have to swallow it, he gets to spit it out when he's done.  Anything else I can do to 'sneak' some good stuff in him? (he's 5 yo, almost 6)

Thanks, HB.

I've been researching, and I almost 100% positive that the red swollen bleeding gums is what's known as trench mouth aka Vincent's Disease.

Here is some info on it:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/trench-mouth/DS00457

It can be caused but poor oral hygiene, but also can be caused by a throat or mouth infection (such as strep)....and well, my boy has strep and his hygiene has been sorely lacking these past few days (partly my fault), so here it is.   Cry

My poor baby...please pray for him.  I hope he heals up soon.  I don't want to go the antiboitic route, but I may have to.  If I do have to take him to the doctor or dentist, pray for safe travel because the roads are supposed to be icy tomorrow.

Also, the site above says to do salt water rinses or hydrogen peroxide rinses....question:  do I have him rinse will full strength hydrogen peroxide?

Hi there. When my family gets strep/sore throats, I try to get as much Vitamin C into them as I can. The kids espeically like the "Emergen-C" vitamin C packets. Walmart carries them now.

I took my son to the doc yesterday, being sure that he had strep & trench mouth & needed antibiotics, but the doc did a swab & culture & even checked his white blood cell count, and she said that all was fine, that it was probably just viral!  Well, I didn't believe that for one bit, but what can you do?  So, I went to Walmart & got some Lysterine to help clean his mouth, since brushing hurts (is Lysterine ok?).  I also went to a health food store, and got some hydrogen peroxide mouth rinse & some colloidal silver (not Sovereign, but the cheapest one - will that be ok?).  I was told that he can swish with the silver & even swallow it.  Is that really ok?  If so, how much do I give him, and how often, and do I give it to him straight, or put it in something?  I've also had him rinse with salt water & garlic water.  Do you think all this will help?  I may call his dentist today to see what he thinks about the gum problem.  Please pray for my son!  (Should I add this to the prayer request thread?)

Hi, I'm really concerned about my son.  Not sure where to post this except here (since I've been posting in this thread already)....I wanted to post some video of mouth/lips/gums/etc, to see what you all thought of it.  His doc said it wasn't a bacterial infection, just viral, but I'm not so sure.  And I can't take him to another doc, since he's on medicaid.  I could take him to a dentist, but I don't know if the dentist can do anything (there's also the problem of me not having a car & trying to find a ride).  I don't know else to do for him.  I've been doing what I can, but nothing seems to be working.  Anyway, the videos aren't that great, and I hope they come through on the post, but maybe you can see it ok....a lot of sores on lips, on the insides of lips, in the mouth, on the roof of mouth, on tongue, and his gums are red, swollen, bleeding, painful.

(Apparantly, you can click on each image, and it will take you to photobucket & play the video.  But, if that doesn't work, let me know, and I'll try something else)

Looks like Coxsackie..Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease....has he had it before? I thought you only got it once but you can get it at any age. And there is nothing the Doc will do except let it run its course. I'm no expert and only one of my four ever got it.

Hand-Foot-Mouth disease?  I've heard of it, but don't know anything about it.  Can you (or anyone) tell me more about it?  Is it viral or bacterial?  What exactly are the symptoms?  Is it contageous?  (I will go ahead & try to research it online too) What I can do at home to help him?  The doc I went to was very rushed & I could barely get two words out to answer a question before she asked another question...but I do remember her checking his hands & feet....maybe she was checking for this?  His hands & feet look fine.  How long does it take to run its course?  I don't think my son has ever had HFMD before.

OK, I did some searching, and I suppose it could HFMD.  Some of the sites did say that you can have the mouth sores without the rash.  Thank you, Freshisbest, by alerting me to this.  HFMD had never even crossed my mind!  I guess the worst part is just letting it run its course.  I also checked out the HFMD thread on WTM.

During my search on HFMD, I also came across something called stomatitis (inflammation of the mouth & gums), which can be caused by an oral herpesvirus infection.  So this could be what he has too.  And this has to run its course too.

Wow, thank God for WTM & the internet.  I'd know absolutely NOTHING if it wasn't for them!

Again, if anyone has any ideas to help make my son more comfortable, or ways to help his body get rid of it sooner, or ways to keep his mouth clean without hurting him, or ideas on what to feed him (he's been drinking water, eating jello, chicken noodle soup, & applesauce), please let me know!  Oh, since what he has is probably viral, what foods/herbs are antiviral?  (I'll do a search on this too)

I know this is probably too late....I'm just now reading for some other info.

Years ago, my son, then about 2-1/2, had what looked like something similar to your sons gums....swollen, red, very tender..... after /during also having sore throat, etc.  I ended up calling a pediatric dentist, who said it  "sounded viral."  He said sometimes those come along with the bacterial infection of a sore throat, and he seemed to suggest it was fairly common.   And now I'm trying to remember what we mixed together to put on his gums, which was mostly for the pain...and it was nothing herbal!!  I'm thinking it was liquid Benadryl and perhaps PeptoBismal.  The Pepto was to make the Benadryl thicker to stay on the gums...and it mainly somehow was supposed to help with the pain.  Also, he suggested using warm water to brush his teeth gently.  Now I know that's nothing 'natural' to help with it, but.....I would think the VIRAL diagnosis was probably correct.   I wouldn't use the Listerine.... it's mostly alcohol and that could hurt the inflamed gum tissue!

Hope he's okay now!!

When I saw your post and then looked at the pictures, I thought it sounded like oral herpes (cold sores).  If that is the case you need to look into giving him some Lysine on a regular basis.  Elderberry is a good anti-viral.  Sambucol is the only formula which has the clinical research to back it up, and it is guaranteed to have the active compound in it.  However, it is expensive.  Elderberry in any form (tea, jelly, capsule, etc) on a daily basis would be a good idea for the remainder of the winter.  And you just can't go wrong with garlic, onions, cinnamon, nutmeg, rosemary, thyme - all those wonderful herbs and spices are very potent medicines IF you use them generously and regularly.

Hope he is feeling much better, poor little guy.

I'm planning to have them drink lots of water, rub them down with goot and take a herbal formula with echinacea  and maybe some elderberry.  Does that sound like a plan?
Also, my husband and I started the Master Cleanse today. I guess I'll just keep going with it and see what happens.   I'm scared  Embarrassed
I appreciate any advice or ideas...

My husband and I have been battling strep throat in our family for 2 weeks, along with our 5 children, all under 6. We all had it a year ago, and were all on antibiotics, but kept getting re-infected! It went on for several weeks! This time round, we have been eating healthy and our bodies seem to be fighting it well. We have been using GOOT, eating garlic, EmergenC, Echinacea, and Grape Seed Extract. My Question is, when you are tackling it the natural way, how do you actually kill the virus? My husband got this almost 2 wks ago, got better, then it came back! I know strep is VERY contagious, but doesn't the body build up a resistance to the Virus when you are not using the antibiotics? Please help! Does anyone have a better plan of attack?! I'm new to all this natural stuff!

Hey Susie, I just wanted to let you know what the big seller at my hfs is for strep throat..."Peaceful Mountain's Throat Rescue".   LOVE THIS PRODUCT!!!!! Grin Grin Grin  It has a chart on the back of the box showing how much more effective it is for killing strep throat than Erythromicyn (SP).  It is $13.95 for 2 ounces, and can be sprayed into the back of the throat every 10-15 minutes, as needed.  This is such a huge seller for me, and it WORKS, so I wanted to let you know.  If your HFS doesn't carry it, try to get them to order it.  They'll be able to sell LOTS of it!!!   Saves lots of $$$$ compared to going to the Dr.!  It also gets rid of sore throats quickly.  Used at the first sign of sore throat, and it usually won't even turn into strep throat!

You can reinfect yourself when it comes to strep throat. If you go on antibiotics, then you won't be reinfected till you go off, which is usually 10 days and by then the germs are probably gone. That is why antibiotics seem so much more effective when it comes to strep throat.  But strep symptoms take 9 days to go away even with antibiotics so using natural cures gives you a leg up there since they relieve symptoms fairly quickly. Anyway, make sure you disinfect toothbrushes, or get new ones, change pillowcases, sheets, etc. etc. Look at the cold & flu remedy threads, too, if your current remedies don't seem to be working - many of those will work. Echinacea & garlic & the other things you are doing should be able to do the trick, though.

Hi Susie!
So glad to hear you're all getting some relief. Grin  I'm really not sure how many bottles you will need to get, we just always use it for 3-4 days to make sure we don't get the strep, but if a sore throat persists, then you'll need to use it for longer.  Sorry I don't have an exact time. Undecided

I know to mention the word antibiotics on this webpage is like mentioning the name of the devil himself.  But I was wondering, is there any way of truly healing a major bacterial infection like strep without antibiotics?  I noticed there were a few people who posted in this thread with a few ideas, well how did it turn out?  I have a major sore throat right now and I have had it for 4 days.  It is not getting better, only worse.  The last time I remember having one so bad was many years ago and it was strep.  I was contimplating going to the doctor tomorrow, but dread it knowing that they will swab my throat and very possibly come back with the diagnosis of strep and then hand me a script for antibiotics.  Soooo, what do I do?  I have a baby that is going to have major surgery in two weeks.  I don't want her to get this, and I definitely don't want her to get stuck on antibiotics, she will be fed enough drugs.  It would be better if I took them and got it over with.  Any ideas?  Also, my son was complaining of a sore throat too.

Last summer my then-6-year-old daughter had a high (104.7) fever and a bad headache.  She came down with them on a Friday evening and I decided to make her comfortable and wait and see.  Her fever went up and down Saturday, but never was less than 102.  By Sunday morning, she was complaining of a sore throat as well.  It was then I remembered Rebekah's recipe for garlic tea, so I made some and had her drink it.  After about 15 min., she asked to take a nap.  When she woke up two hours later, her fever was 99 and she said her throat and head did not hurt anymore.  She wanted to go out and play!  I made her stay in and rest, and the next day I took her to the doctor.  Her "fever" was still just 99.  He did a strep test and told me she was VERY positive.  Then he asked me what I had given her, and I told him.  He wondered aloud if it would work for him!  I gave her one more dose of garlic tea that evening, and by Tuesday she was back to normal.

Personally, I think garlic tea works better than eating raw garlic because it does not take as long to digest; it is more easily digested (less chance for stomach upset); the patient is more likely to take it since it does not taste quite as strong and can be easily swallowed; and it "coats" the throat on the way down, providing immediate benefit and relief.

Previously on this thread, someone asked the question about why antibiotics are bad for your gut, but garlic isn't.  A book I have on nature's antibiotics says that garlic in much more complex than antibiotics, which are just one or two isolated active ingredients that bacteria have figured out how to defeat. Moreover, the bacteria are able to communicate this information to other bacterium which have never come in contact with the antibiotic, enabling them to defeat it too.  The different bacterium are able to communicate this information without even coming in contact with one another! (Scientists don't understand how, but know that it is true.)  Hence the reason they are always having to come up with new antibiotics!  Garlic, on the other hand, is so complex that the bacterium cannot figure out how to defeat and so they are killed.  Also, unlike antibiotics, garlic contains things that boost our immune systems in addition to killing bacteria.  It is a double threat!  Did God do good making this or what?!!  And that's not all--the book also says that garlic does not seem to kill off all the beneficial flora in our gut.  Again, scientists don't seem to know how this happens, only that it does.  (By the way, according to this book, Grapefruit Seed Extract can and will kill off more than you want it to in the gut---use sparingly and not for an extended length of time).

Ok I have had a sore throat for 11 days, now theres a white patch behind my throat...tonsils?  Anyway, It came and went.  I thought I had beat it and it would come back.  Now I am on the verge of going to the doctor.  But can I give it a day or two at home safley, it I treat it with natural gargles every hour?  I do not have fever, just this white lump on one side of my throat.

I have: Soveriegn Silver 1/2 oz,  Beeyoutiful Grapefruit seed crush, and echinacea tincture.  I do not have eucalyptus.  How and what dosages should I do?

IS there hope of treating it naturally or should I go to doc today?
