I already use a vinegar infusion which has chamomile, lavender and peppermint every day.  Couldn't I just mix some horsetail in this and use it instead of buying the mixed herbs to get the shiny silicon effects?

I don't see why not.  It couldn't hurt to try.  I am not sure if the silicon in the nettle works because it is being heated(like Magic Slime/Beautiful Hair) or not.  If it doesen't work, try heating it.  Let us know how your experiment goes, HB.

The website said the silicone was in the Horsetail.  Did I get this wrong?  I hope not, because I only ordered horsetail.  I thought the nettle was for conditioning of the scalp and my scalp is good, so I saved this money for something else.

FINALLY!  An alternative to Magic Slime! Grin  i love using that stuff, but boy is it gross!  This will make a nice alternative.  thanks for sharing youngin'  I will let you know how it turns out!

By Magic Slime do you mean the beautiful hair treatments available at the Bulk Herb Store? I just ordered some for my daughter and me to try. What kind of vinegar should we use: apple cider or distilled (white)?

TIA!

Yah!  That's the stuff.  I just call it the original name it was when Shoshanna ran the BHS. (he hee, that's funny, those initials are my high school's...anyways) I wouldn't recommend distilled vinegar for anything.  Use the apple cider if you want some auburn/red highlights, or lemon juice if you want blonde.  I love doing it and am waiting to purchase some more.

Yes, I think the silicon is in the horsetail/shavegrass. I always mix up my own batch of herbs, about once every three months:

Horsetail (shine and hair shaft health)
Nettle (scalp stimulation and health)
Henna (color and depth)
Rosemary (sometimes, great for hair in general, I've heard)
Oatstraw (full of nutrients, also gives a slight blond highlight, I think.)

Warm mixed and powdered herbs on the stove with apple cider vinegar, olive oil (or mayonaise) to be a thick, stick-to-your-damp-hair texture. Do not let it heat enough to stick to the bottom of the pan. Keep stirring. Once it's warm through and through, let it sit and cool while you lightly dampen your hair.

Apply generously to damp hair, wad hair/herbs into a mass ontop of your head, and then wrap your head in plastic/plastic bag, and then in warm towel. I changed out warm towels as they cool, to keep the mixture on my head warm for about 45 - 95 minutes.

Then I go out to the hose and turn my head over and spray the chunks out with the hose, until my hair is clean of herbs. Then I either dry it, and keep the herb smell/oils in overnight, waiting to shampoo in the  morning (preference) or I go ahead and shower/shampoo. I think the results are much better to leave in the residue until morning though.

If you have blond hair, you can add chamomile and lemon juice instead of vinegar - and leave out the henna.
Henna comes in different shades, red, brown, dark... I think mine is a brown-red which is my natural hair color. I bought it in the Old City Jerusalem 8 years ago, and it's still good. Henna hair coloring is very popular there.

Thanks, I was wondering if I could combine the henna, because the henna dried out my scalp and I didn't really want the nettle.  This was helpful.

I warm my towels in the oven - on low - and don't forget them! Use old towels - all our towels are old!

The olive oil should help with the dry-itchy scalp problem that the nettle might cause. I never get itchy...

Has anyone been using the ayurvedic hair oils and going "no poo"Huh my hair is definitely more manageable now, but also less touchable. I have mid-back length baby fine/somewhat thick slightly wavy hair and with "no poo" the baking soda makes it look clean, but it still is a little sticky, and the vinegar makes my hair look greasy so I'm barely using it at all. I'm wondering if I condition my hair all over with either Beka or ALittleMore's hair oil recipes if it will even out the oils in my hair and make it silky again. Oh, and I'm not using any "products" like hairspray or gel... with "no poo" I've not needed them at all. But I want touchable hair. Does anyone have any ideas or experience that can help me?

I'm not sure why vinegar would make your hair sticky.  Huh  Are you using enough water?  I haven't tried the baking soda myself.  I just use soap, but I'm still mystified.

I've had this happen, too. The main thing that has helped is to be sure you're rinsing your hair very well after using the baking soda. Also, use a natural boar bristle brush, not a plastic or nylon brush. Brushes of those synthetic materials do not cause your natural oils to distribute properly and they strip and pull the hair, damaging it and causing breakage.

Also, I would FOR SURE suggest a detangler before brushing. I am going to start using Hair Shine by Beeyoutiful because it contains Aloe Vera and Aloe Vera juice is what I have used to make my hair more managable many times. Smiley

And also, when you use the hair oils, I would use a  shampoo afterwards to sort of "de-grease" your hair. Look for a mild or all-natural shampoo that will not dry or damage your hair. (Check the labels.) Mountain Rose Herbs sells all-natural shampoo, I've never used it personally, but the ingredients look very good. I know all-natural shampoos are expensive, but if you only use them after you oil your hair (say, once ot twice a week?) the shampoo will last you a while.

Hope that helps!

I've even gotten vomit out with just bar soap.  Shocked  In fact, Cheesy I'm starting to actually LIKE my hair oily. I add oil to it some mornings when it is dry and maybe wash it only once a week. Also, does anyone know about those "oil of myrrh" beauty treatments as mentioned in Ester?

I know I missed that somehow?!... if she did. Can we get that re-printed if there was one?

I want longer hair and nails! They have never grown much - I am fascinated with trying no poo and vinegar and oils and am in process of finding any changes to the way things have been with my hair primarily , for years and years. I think my hair is affected by our local water supply for whatever chemicals and additives they put into the water. And I wonder if it is also the cause of my weak nails. This may need to be a different topic altogether!

Now my hair is graying a whole lot and I do not intend to dye it! I'm hoping the oat straw will give the blond highlights - I have always been a blond at heart since that's what I was before 12 or so.  Cheesy My highlights were always red on light brown hair after I lost my blond. Also, my hair is considerably drier and no more washing it every single day. The gray has more texture, so I hope for waves or curls I never had. I see some of  that occuring, so we'll see.

I make homemade oatmeal soap and super-fat it with olive oil. This has been fine for washing my hair. I wondered if glycerine soap was better?
Because the homemade soap seems to weigh my hair down some. I have been trying this for about a month now and I think I need to go with this longer term to really see what happens.

I found luxurious results from oiling my hair with olive oil, and then washing it with a whole egg and soap.

QUESTIONS! I've been real curious to try to steep rosemary and lavender from my garden - or is there a better way of using the fresh growing plants. Should they be used in the oiling, or in the shampooing? And is oat straw tea going to work the same? Essential oils are just for fragrance?

Cheer me on ladies and add anything on this , because my husband has always wanted my hair to be down to my bottom and It has NEVER grown much past my shoulders!

LOL! All this about hair! But scripture does tell us that a woman's hair is her glory.

Why was it necessary for a year of purification?

During the first 6 months, the girls were to use the herb Myrrh. All down through the ages Myrrh has been used for oral hygiene, making the breath fresh and preventing tooth decay. It is also beneficial as an astringent, drawing out skin impurities. Myrrh has been used internally to treat colds, asthma, indigestion, gonorrhea, and sore throats. Too much Myrrh causes extreme diarrhea, which would help cleanse a person of parasites.

During the last 6 months, the girls preparing for the king were to use sweet odors and other things for purifying. Her skin would become soft as silk and saturated with the smell of pure sweet oils. This 12 months of cleansing could have been a part of a religious ceremony as well as a physical cleansing.

Leprosy, tuberculosis, and sexual diseases were common and usually meant death. In the early stages many diseases are not evident. One year was long enough to bring out fits, bad moods, selfishness, and uncontrolled tempers, bringing to light those unfit to be a queen. Even headaches or other such chronic weaknesses could cancel out a potential queen. Lice, fleas, scabies and other skin problems common in that time would be taken care of. The oils and the herbs would cleanse the girls of parasites (which would have also been a problem in old days.)
Because drugs for healing were not available, prevention was critically important.

During the year of purification, girls with any signs of physical, mental, or emotional problems would be eliminated. The new queen had to be perfect. After all, this girl would become the wife/queen of the King Ahasuerus, who was the king of the largest kingdom on earth.

I have a puzzle.  I have gone no shampoo and no bar soap for four weeks and don't want to go back.  (In July, I used bar soap and rinsed with vinegar, but after two weeks, my hair was dripping with oil, all the way to the tips.  Using only vinegar on my hair leaves my hair oily, but only for the first six inches.)  I used to go to sleep each night sratching my head, but now my scalp feels soft and happy.  After the first week, the last twelve inches of my hair became thicker, and gained a gorgeous gloss.  My hair used to be terribly frizzy, and now it is smooth, even the section that isn't oily.  The roots of my hair have started to be less oily in the last two weeks.

However, my mother is totally mortified.  She is embarrassed, because she thinks I look like, "all those teens who grease/gel their hair."  I am an adult, but I do live at home, and I don't want my mother to get more upset about this.  I am convinced that in two or three months my hair oils will stabilize, but in the mean time, I would like some ideas on what to do for my mother.

"Mortified Mothers" should be a different topic, Honey! Cheesy I wonder what kind of response you'd get?

What about a nice slicked back bun like a ballerina?

I oiled my hair the last week with a home concoction of olive oil, the zest of one lemon and I infused oat straw into that in the microwave, I went out to mow the place and in-between stopping to care for my young man, and baking cookies for the home meeting and loads of laundry, 4 hrs had passed before I was able to wash it out. My hair did lighten some! My hair was clean and good smelling, shiny and manageable - but the ends were still dry! I had used my oatmeal soap to wash with and the vinegar rinse.

I made up a batch of sesame oil soap which took much longer to cure. The bars sweat beads of the oil so, I wrapped them all up in tissue and just stored them. I thought I'd try this soap out on my hair instead of my favorite everyday oatmeal soap that I make since my hair was getting so dry at the last four inches. The dryness was corrected. I was so thankful, because I didn't want to loose that 4 inches!

One more week, 4 more washings. Gonna stay on this sesame oil soap a while and see how my hair responds.

I would love to try a few of the recipes I've read on this thread, but I have just a few questions!   Grin

I've been using baking soda water instead of shampoo and I'm afraid if I shampoo with that after leaving the oil on overnight, it may strip the oil too much.  Any thoughts?  If I use regular shampoo, I itch and get dandruff.

How often do you do this treatment?  Weekly?  And, then how often do you shampoo?

I usually use conditioner, should I still use it after the oil treatment?

Thanks a bunch!!

Good question.   I just did a beautiful hair treatment today and my hair feels so nice!   Cheesy    I had been using BS and vinegar rinse and my hair had gotten so dry!   Ick.   Anybody else have this problem.
I have done the olive oil treatment before but it is really hard to get all the oil out and I always feel like I am defeating the effects of the treatment when I have to shampoo at least twice to get it out.
Today when I did the hair treatment I used 1 tbsp olive oil and 1 tbsp jojoba oil and my hair doesn't feel oily at all.

I was thinking about doing the oiling as well. My idea is that I will wash my hair with a bar soap (rinse with acv if doing bar soap) or organic non-SLS shampoo beforehand. I will probably leave the oil in as long as possible, hopefully all day. When I am finished I will try to rinse my hair very well and then let it alone. I am sure if I continue to rinse it everyday the extra oil will be gone very quickly. I just might have to look like a grease-head  Shocked for a couple days Roll Eyes

I'm with you, healthnut - I'm thinking of putting the oil in today just for a few hours and then take my shower while the little ones are napping.  I don't have any other herbs right now so I'll just do coconut oil and maybe a little bit of vanilla extract so it smells nicer.  I think I'll just use the homemade bar soap I have and not condition, like the other ladies had said.  We've got dinner plans tonight with friends, so hopefully I won't be TOO greasy!!   Cheesy

okay - so I've got the oil in!  I put the towel in the dryer to heat up first.  Then melted the coconut oil and put in a few drops of vanilla.  Once the oil was heated, I put it on starting with the ends.  Then wrapped with a plastic bag, then got the hot towel out of the dryer and wrapped that too.  Anyone know if I can save the leftover oil in the fridge and use it for next time?

Would be very interested in knowing what oils you use and how this works just rinsing and not using any soap to wash it out.   Please keep us posted.    I desperately need to get my hair in better condition.    I a moment of weakness before Christmas I got a perm and that really dried my hair also.    I used to do an Olive Oil with Rosemary every week but that was so hard to wash out.    Made my hair nice though.
