I'm thinking of putting the oil in today just for a few hours

okay - so I've got the oil in!  I put the towel in the dryer to heat up first.  Then melted the coconut oil and put in a few drops of vanilla.  Once the oil was heated, I put it on starting with the ends.  Then wrapped with a plastic bag, then got the hot towel out of the dryer and wrapped that too.  Anyone know if I can save the leftover oil in the fridge and use it for next time?

OH THE GREASINESS!!!  I had to wear my hair as inconspicous as possible to dinner tonight!!!

I had the oil/vanilla on for about three hours then, before getting into the shower, I lathered up a homemade natural soap bar (as much as possible anyway, those things don't lather real well) and rubbed it into my hair.  Then I got into the shower and wet the hair and tried to lather it a bit more and then rinsed.  It still felt really really greasy so I did the same thing again.  STILL felt pretty greasy but I was very nervous about using a regular shampoo on my whole head, so I used some just on the long portion of hair (not the part that touches my scalp at all).  That seemed to help - so I finished my shower and got out.

As the ends were drying, the roots were not drying and I realized it was because there was still lots of oil there.  It was too late to rewash - so I just put the hair up.  Now, I'm ready to rewash, but I don't know what to use.  Seems like the natural soap didn't do the trick and regular shampoo hurts my head.  Also, after all the soaping, the wonderful vanilla smell is gone.   Undecided

I'm not giving up though.  Maybe the essential oils or the herbs that were listed in the first few recipes on this thread help with the oil balance once its on your hair.  Also, I think I'll go to a natural store and see if I can find a better shampoo, like maybe Burt's Bee or something.

Anyone else that has done this before and has some advice - please chime in SOON!!!!!   Grin  I was thinking about emailing ALittleMore, the one who started this thread, since it sounds like she has done this a few times before, but her profile says she hasn't been around in a while and I don't want to be a bother.  Anyone else have some experience that we newbies can learn from?

I just looked back at the other recipes given at the beginning of the thread and both list olive oil as the only or part of the ingredients.  I wonder if olive oil is easier to get out.  Maybe I'll try olive and coconut next time instead of just coconut.

I've never had trouble getting coconut oil out of my hair with just a regular shower and bar soap/vinegar rinse; however, I've never used it to condition my whole head, mine was always incidental contact of some kind.

I agree. My advice would be to just wash it again, maybe wash really well with the bar soap, rinse well, and wash again in the same shower. Eventually it will come out!

It looks better today - still a bit coated, but not greasy.  When we got home from dinner, I washed it all over with regular shampoo.  As it dried, it looked really dry and frizzy so I used some coconut oil to control the frizziness.  Curled the ends today and it seems okay.  It's also very VERY cold here in WI and my hair has been really static-y all day (never have a problem with that any other day) so maybe that's why it looked so dry last night.

I think if I get a better shampoo that I'm not afraid to use on my head, it will be easier to get out.  I just hate the itch and flakes.  It doesn't seem much better today in that regard, so hopefully if I do this again with a better shampoo, I'll get better overall results.

Thanks everyone!

Hi all.    Here is the receipe that I have used lately:   1/2 olive oil and 1/2 jojoba oil with about 10 drops of rosemary oil added.   I have used this twice in the last 3 weeks.   I put it on and leave it 1-2 days without washing it out.   On about the 3rd day, depending on my schedule, I  wash it out with Borax water and citric acid rinse.   It doesn't feel super clean but when it dries it doesn't look greasy.   After that I just rinse each day with warm water until I feel it is starting to look dirty then I wash with the Borax water again.   I find that I am only washing my hair about once a week anymore and my hair is starting to look healthier.   Cheesy      I don't know if this would work for everyone but am glad I finally found something that is working for me.    I'm sure all these things depend a great deal on whether you have oily hair or dry and how often you wash your hair.    Just thought I would post in case it would help someone else.

Hey Daisey,

Curious about the Borax water/citric acid rinse.....is this something you make or purchase?  and if you do make it, please share!  Isn't borax harsh in your hair?  do you worry about getting it into your eyes?

thanks,

I read about Borax water in Hulda Clark's book The Cure For All Diseases You put about and inch of Twenty Mule Team Borax in the bottom of a gallon jug and fill it with water.   Shake it up good and let it sit until you need it.   You use the water strained off to wash your hair then mix 1/4-1/2 tsp (this depends on how long your hair is) citric acid with about a qt or so of water and rinse.    Borax is really a softening agent as far as I can figure.   I have read that women in olden days washed their hair with it.    I don't think it is as drying as Baking Soda but am not read sure about that.   It doesn't really seem to dry my hair.   HB is maybe going to test the ph of the borax water next week to compare with some other things.    I have not gotten it in my eyes so don't really know if it would burn or not.    Sorry I don't have a lot of answers but I just remember that Hulda Clark recommended it when trying to get rid of all the chemicals if you are trying to heal from Cancer or other diseases.    I felt confident that she wouldn't recommend something that would be harmful to your skin or hair.
Hope that answers some of your questions.

Ok, so borax is a softener.....i didn't realize -  I guess the "mule" threw me off a bit.

So what about the citric acid?  Where do you get that?

Thanks

I used to be able to buy Citric Acid at the pharmacy but they don't sell it anymore so I get it from www.bulkfoods.com    It cost about $13 for 10 pounds.  Glad to help.
