  Bartholin ABSCESS
« on: June 05, 2006, 10:45:29 PM » by mishy
I think this is what I have.  It is swollen and painful.  How would you herbally treat this?  I had it before I got prego with no 4 and was treated with antibiodics.  This time I would like to treat it naturally if possible.
Thanks!

Here is what I got from Go Ask Alice

On either side of the vaginal opening is a pair of glands called the Bartholin  or vestibular glands. The Bartholin gland produces fluid that lubes the vulva's inner lips. Located on each side of the entrance into the vagina (introitus), this substance can ease penetration. If the opening to either of these glands becomes blocked, a Bartholin cyst is formed that can make a bulge in the lip near the opening of the vagina. The cyst can also swell and become tender. Small, uninfected cysts may not have to be treated, but do need to be monitored by a health care provider.

Bartholin cysts can also become infected, forming what are known as abscesses. Abscesses can be excruciatingly painful and require treatment, such as oral antibiotics. Warm baths or compresses can help alleviate discomfort till your wife sees a provider. Cysts that cause pain or other problems can be drained by the provider by inserting a small tube (called a catheter) into the gland or by making an incision directly into the gland itself. In some cases, surgical removal of the Bartholin gland is recommended, particularly for women with recurrent cysts. Fortunately, once cysts are treated with surgery, they're less likely to reoccur.

I think I have had these before! It was years ago and my doctor was no help, told me if I wanted to I could have surgery even though they were basically harmless! I had it twice and it has not reoccured but I'd also be interested in a home remedy in case it ever flares up again.

Hey Mishy,
Do you own "The How To Herb Book"?  It has a couple of combo treatments for female cysts and things.  If you don't, send me a PM and I will give you the list of the herbs they recommend.  If you DO own it look on page 175 under FOR WOMEN ONLY.  Let us know how you do.
Praying for you to feel better, Lisa

Thanks Danna for the site
There was a listing for sitz bath w/ epson salts, lavender, & tea tree oil.

Amazon,
I don't have that book so if you could please post or PM me with something I would be MOST grateful!!

Healthybratt or whoever remembers:  what is the recipe that someone posted with garlic, coconut and one other thing?  I thought it was GOOT, but when I searched I couldn't find it.

THANKS!!! I am encouraged to have SOMETHING to try.

Here are some combos.  In this book there are no "measurements" they like you to be the judge of what works for you.

#1. Gentian, Irish Moss, Goldenseal, Comfrey, Fenugreek seeds, Mandrake, Safflower, Myrrh Gum, Yellow Dock, Echinacea, Black Walnut, Barberry, Dandelion, St. John's Wort, Chickweed, Catnip, Cyani.
You use any or all of the above and this is for a general cleanser and parasites (not sure why they recommend this combo for cysts).

#2. Echinacea, Goldenseal, Yarrow, Capsicum.
This is for infection.  And again, any or all of the above.

#3. Garlic douche

Hoping you feel well soon!

Hey!
Actually, they use alot of capsules.  As I don't have those here in Brazil, we make teas and drink them.  The first combo may clean you out fast and give you a headache.  Just dilute your herbs a little more.
The douche of course, is self explanatory. Tongue

I changed the name of this thread because it is an abscess not a cyst.  So, what do you put on an abscess?  I am already drinking teas with some of the things mentioned by amazon mama. I tried a garlic pad on it this morning and plan to continue those.  I am also swallowing  raw garlic.
Also, what is in the beautiful hair treatment? I have been putting that on it because I think and hope it is benotine clay?  That (the clay) is supposed to draw the yuck to the surface.
I also did a sitz bath with tea tree oil, lavendar oil & epson salts.

Any other ideas?  How do you lance something (not sure I am brave enough for that or if it would be a smart thing.....).

Hi Mishy,
To lance something you prod and poke at it with a sterile needle.  I don't recommend this as you can get a worse infection.  Baking soda is good to pull pus, you could even mix it with a little garlic oil (not the bulb) and apply it several times a day.  I am glad you are feeling a little better and will pray God will give you wisdom to treat this sore and be well.
Have a good night,
Lisa

Danna, I hate to say it, but I think it's time for some medical intervention.  Everything I'm reading says an abscess is a diff't story & not to be fooled with -- they used a certain type of special catheter in it after draining it, & they will also issue antibiotics as it is a true bacterial infection.  They will try to test you for venereal diseases & the like, so stand your ground on that issue & let them know it's more likely from a bacteria already in your vagina.

But yeah, I'd definitely go in at this point.  Taking garlic cut up in tiny pieces twice a day (or three if your tummy can handle it) is a natural antibiotic, & it will work, but I'm just not sure there's enough time right now for that.  What are your thoughts?

Or wait, wait -- I saw some stuff on that clay you were hoping would work -- the Indian red clay?  Are you going to try that one?

This sounds just SO incredibly painful & all-consuming.   Cry

I know, Abe said not to wait too long.  I am leery about the doc methods after reading that forum you listed.  They didn't have very much good to say about the antibiodics!!  ahhh.  It has only been 2 days of pain, but it sure sprung up FAST! Yikes.  I'll see how it is tomorrow.  If only it will come to the surface and rupture, that would be so nice.  The aztec clay is benotine clay (if I spelled it right) and that is why I am hoping what is in beautiful hair is the benotine clay.  RIght now I have baking soda on it.
You're right.  It is a huge pain.  Man, if they drained it at the doc.....  can't even think of that. OUCCCCCH. Smiley

Thanks for your prayers!  It is not going to well.  Still VERY big and VERY painful.  I have had it coated with baking soda and then the past two days wtih salt, oatmeal, flaxseed& fenugreek seeds.  It is just SO sore.  Sad  I think tomorrow I am going to have to go to the doc to get it lanced because I can hardly walk right now.  Right now I have the lining of an egg on it.  Trying everything to get it to head.  Wish I had the clay as that is supposed to be the best.  But that probably won't be here until the 14th at the earliest and I am not sure I can wait that long.....   Sad((((
Please pray this thing will head and burst!
Thanks!

Is this one where you can heat a glass bottle, and put it on your abcess and cool it down, so it will draw it out?  I read that in another post about acne, or possibly boils?  Sounded like another way to possibly make it come to a head.  Undecided

(At the end of that first link is how to dig up your own clay, in case you didn't notice.)

Also, I keep running across this idea that sounds feasible:  take some lye soap shavings & mash them together with sugar.  Find a way to secure (tape or something, HAH!) this over the abscess, & it will draw it to a head.

I didn't fill the antibiodic yet, I want to just take garlic 3-4x a day instead.  The antibiodic was for 2x a day.  Opinions please??

Thanks!

Lye soap.  Do I have that?

Lye = Sodium Hydroxide or Potassium Hydroxide.  Check the labels on your bar soap.

I don't know anything about that one, but when I looked it up, it sounds like a very specific antibiotic.  Well-prescribed kind of thing.  I guess I'd give the garlic a timeframe in which to work, & if you hit the last day & things aren't sufficiently improved, then start it?  What do you think?

Ladies, I am new to the forum but I hope my experience will help.

I have had one of the hideous visitations!  It grew quite painful.
The doc lanced it and inserted the catheter and put me on the same antibiotics.
I took them on the advice of my herbalist.  She said this was not a time to fool around.  Get it healed up and over with as quickly as possible.

Before I had it lanced and took the antibiotics, the thing used to flair up about 2 times a year over 8 years.  It has now been 3 years with no flair up and I can't even feel it anymore.  (it used to be a small grape sized knot all the time and then get swollen during a flair up).

So... my advice is fill the perscription, take the garlic.  Once you have taken the full course of antibiotics, chow down the yogurt and acidophilus tablets.

Thanks!  It is good to know the advice of an herbalist.
My only thing against the antibiodics is that I am nursing too. Sad  so he's gonna get some of it.

Mishy, thanks so much for sharing your experience with us...and those that responded.  We've been dealing with what we thought started out as a chigger bite on our 3 yr old's vagina lip for over a month (read my story http://welltellme.com/discuss/index.php/topic,1051.msg7035.html#msg7035), but now the doc says it is a bacterial abscess in her hair follicles.  Yes, one heals after draining and more pop up down there.  We've tried some of everything: activated charcoal, goldenseal, myrrh, garlic internal and external, kefir internal and external, epsom salt, oatmeal, and chamomile baths, prescription bacterial creams, over the counter creams, and on and on.  I took her to the doc again yesterday.  He couldn't believe she wasn't in pain and feverish after all this time...I guess those remedies did work some, but not enough to take it completely out after such a long time without treatment.  He gave her a sulphur based antibiotic, Sulfatrim.  I was really leery of giving it to her, since the first five days of antibiotics (a weaker kind) didn't solve the problem.  We just started the epsom salts baths the day before yesterday and we've already noticed the increased rate of drainage (before giving her the Sulfatrim)...so hopefully this will be over soon.  It's encouraging to hear someone else's story and not completely grope in the dark.  So now I'll give her plenty of kefir to replace good gut bacteria and be encouraged in Jesus' name.  I'll let you know how this comes out for us, too.

Oh no!!  I am so sorry for your little girl!  The thing I read that was the supposed to be the best to draw out pus was Bentonite clay.  One recommended the aztec brand, but I just got the one from the bulkherb.  I didn't get it in time to use on the abscess, but now I have it.
I didn't end up using the antibiodics, I used the immune booster tea and garlic 3x a day.
I hope it clears up for her!!!   Sad
God bless!
