Is this yarrow?  I wasn't sure bc of the leaves.
Here's a link to Queen Anne's Lace.

Abbilynn -I also say that the white flower pic on reply 241 is queen Ann's lace also called wild carrot. I was just eating some today. You can eat the flowers and the roots.

if the stem is hairy and there is a tiny redish purplish blackish dot in the middle of the white flower then you know it is Queens Ann's lace AKA wild carrot. You can be extra sure by pulling it up by the roots and if the roots smell like a carrot it is Queens Ann's lace/wild carrot.

Thanks guys!!!  So, bummer on the Queen Anne's Lace.  I'll keep looking for yarrow - how can I be sure if I find it?  Also, excellent call on the Bee Balm!!!  I found these things in a small flower bed at the house our cousin just moved in to.  What can I use Bee Balm for?  Other than attracting humming birds?  Also, any suggestions on the third one?  It was also in the patch of stuff.  It has a definite smell to it, can't quit describe it, and the stem is square.

Can someone tell me what this is?  The leaves are soft on both sides.

It looks like catnip to me.
Do you have a cat to try it on?  Wink

Queen Ann's lace usually (always?) has a tiny dark red spot in the very middle of the flower cluster. The story goes that Queen Ann was sewing lace, pricked her finger, and left a drop of blood on the lace.

I like that!
The story I was told to help id was " The Queen has hairy legs" because of the fine hairs on the stems.

Ha! That's a funny way to remember.  Cheesy     I'll have to look at the stems closely next time.

Does anyone know what this is?  This is a "baby", about 2+ ft tall, maybe a month old.  These things are growing in a big group, kind of like bamboo, and get crazy-tall, well over 20 ft I'd guess.  Our friends don't like them, but don't know how to get rid of it.
I don't know how to figure it out looking online.  If I had a book, I could probably do it!

Yup, that's it!  The wife knew what it was, but the husband didn't.  He's the one who asked me to find out.

Another good suggestion...has it flowered yet?

HM--Thanks for reminding me that I have Creeping Jenny...that's not what mine looks like.  Looks like field bindweed...  Smiley

#5 reminds me of motherwort, but the leaves aren't quite the same.  Is the stem square?

#6 looks like stinging nettle.

Butterfly weed is definitely what that one orange one is I think.  There was only one small bunch of it surrounded by other stuff.

Not sure on the stem of #5, I didn't bring it home with me.

I thought #6 looked like stinging nettle too, but I don't remember it stinging me.  Huh Huh Roll Eyes  I'm going to go back and check in a couple days and see to make sure.  Cheesy

Is there two types of stinging nettle?  Pic #6 is one type I think, but there was also large patches of stuff that DID sting as we walked through it but the leaves were bigger and rounder than pic #6.

Oh, BTW, I got the Peterson field guide to medicinal herbs and I love it!!!

BB is supposed to be low and shrubby...Huh  Maybe google "looks like butcher's broom"?

Yes--round stem and square stem, I think, stinging nettle.  Think I learned that on a stinging nettle thread here.

Glad you got the book!  Newcomb's is great, too.  If you know how many petals, the leaf arrangement, and type of leaf we can look it up...Wink

You take very good pix, WR!  Thanks for giving us some more practice.  Wink

How many flower parts on the 1st purple one?  It has opposite leaves in addition to the basal ones, correct?

We have two of those I know.

I have no idea what they are, but we have them!!!

First, does the yellow one have a funky smell when you pick it?

The one with the little green spiney things on the end we used to play with as children.  And the second one down, I have all over my yard.  I would love to know of some use for it. Roll Eyes

The purple one's a stumper WR, w/o more info...a bit like lobelia.  The flowers--I can't tell if they're irregular or if they have a number of regular petals.

The furry one looks like lamb's ear--my only guess...

Haven't even tackled the green one or the one of the leaves--any flowers there?  Calling herbfever and Mrs. B!  Cheesy

I really like this thread... and would rather that it be a thread for each herb (or set of herbs anyway) so that searching will be easier in the future.

So... I have moved it to this new board, "plant identification," and request that each identification request be a separate thread... threads can be merged later in the event of redundant id requests.

Also, there is a way for the original poster to modify the title of the whole thread by modifying the title of the original post... so, after a plant is identified, please take the time to rename the thread with the common & Latin plant names.

--gabe

PS: Oh, and copy/paste's + links of medicinal uses and / or toxicities, etc would be great! Remember that in almost all cases, AMA type sources will say that an herb is contraindicated for pregnancy, etc if the herb does not have medical clinical trials... so that type of "information" is generally useless and need not be pasted... try to find reports that rely on actual trials, studies, or anecdotal information such as ethno-botanical histories, etc.

Anyway... this thread is awesome.

Only 1287 looks familiar to me--like my lemon balm (a mint)...is the stem square (trademark of mints)?

After you move these to new threads, I'll check and see if I can ID any w/ my book.

Good idea, Gabe!

Ha!  Those pics are only a small portion of what's in my jungle...I mean, yard.

I looked up pics of lemon balm, and the leaves just don't look the same, so I don't think 1287 is lemon balm.
