Wow, four pages and I am supposed to be getting ready for church and fixing supper.  My 2yo has a wicked rash and it seems more like a burn.  We have Chili Sunday night and then spagetti last night.  It is so read and acutally we have been struggling awhile b/c i thinks she may also have a yeast problem but I havne't been able to go get any coconut oil for goot.  I think i have nothing to help soothe.  I am out of ointment which I don't want to use anyway b/c I think it will keep her moist and i think she needs dryness.  Okay I could do cornstarch for that but what about soothing it?  It really does seem more like a burn?  Help!

a warm baking soda bath often helped sooth my babies sore bottoms (especially helpful if these are burns from the acids in the foods).  clean the area as well as you can BEFORE you put them in if possible.  That way, there's no irritation from soaking in soap.  Then let them run around without bottoms for as long as you can, then use the cornstarch once you diaper them.

The last couple weeks, my 10mo developed a red area in the crack of his bum around the "exit" (sorry, I was trying to think of better way to say that). It didn't seem to hurt him but it wouldn't go away. Then he got a small bad spot at the base of his p3nis that did hurt him when I tried to clean it. I used Burt's bees diaper ointment on it for about two days, just to keep it from burning when he wet his diaper, and started adding some kefir to his sippy cup of raw milk. He has only had a little kefir once a day for about three days now and all the red and sore areas are going away. It is a very noticeable improvement.

Ever since weaning Lizzie, and switching her to goat's milk, I haven't been able to get her rash-free.  Right now it is raw and oozing.  It is just terrible.  It makes me want to cry.  Cry

I need to go read this whole thread and find some ideas that I haven't tried, yet.

And here's my problem:
Baby 12 month gets diaper rash when he is either teething or has a cold.  I know it's from excess saliva and/or mucus in his system.  His poo smells like acid, but is not runny.  Sometimes the rash can bleed.  Needless to say, he is miserable.
I obviously can't stop the teething!  Or, it seems, the colds here and there.  And I have a good essential oil solution that is soothing and healing.  But what I want to know is this - can I prevent the rash from happening even when he is teething or snotty?
Would good bacteria added to his diet help?  He already eats yogurt and kefir some.  He drinks no juice, has a good diet, etc.  Just breastmilk and water for bevs.  But would some additional probiotic do something on his gut that would help process the spit and snot?
Poor guy.  Hate to add insult to injury, as if teething or illness isn't bad enough, then he gets sore bloody bum!
Help!
p.s.  when no conditions are there, his bum is pink and happy!

Our two-year-old girl was having terrible diaper rashes.  For most of her life she had been fine - we didn't even own any diaper cream.  Then she started this awful rash - it was like her skin was burned right off.  Nothing but oozing red.  The really expensive thick creams could bridge over the red rawness and provide some relief, but nothing was clearing it up.  We were getting really desperate.  Every bowel movement reminded me of a woman in labor.  It was terrible.  Finally I mentioned it to the right person, and they whispered in my ear, "worms".  After a bit more explanation I drove straight to the nearest pharmacy, and spent $10 on over-the-counter pinworm medicine.  I gave it to the two-year-old, and her two older siblings (just in case).  It healed up and her skin grew back in about 48 hours - unbelievable.  It took more than two months before she'd have a bowel movement without being terrified it would hurt, poor kid!
Just thought I'd throw out a really off-the-wall solution that worked for us when we were at our wits end.

I have recently found/made my own rash salve that has been very good for open sores on raw bottoms.  My 15mo daughter has open sores on her bottom if we miss the potty and she is teething.  Awful, nasty, soupy poops that seem to be very acidic.

I put 1 part echinacea tops, 2 parts comfrey and 3 parts plantain (all dry) in a pint jar.  I fill it about 3/4 full.  Then I put in about 1 cup coconut oil (I just use LouAna for this) and 1 Tb or less olive oil.   Prepare a crockpot that has a warm setting by filing it at least 3/4 full of hot water and a rack or a rag on the bottom.  Put the jar in the water (don't let the water in) and set the lid on propped open so it can vent some of the heat.  Don't want the water to get over 140deg F.  My last batch I let sit for 24 hours and then dumped the whole jar into a coffee filter lined strainer to drain.  It's very green.

I put this on her bottom at any diaper change that might need it.  It's pretty solid - not a cream - but it melts right away.  I do this intentionally cuz I don't want to apply any pressure when I spread it on - it looks really sore.  If she is upset from the cleaning of the mess, she is calmed by the cooling of the oil as it melts... and I suspect the plantain is pretty helpful, too.

She has a pin head sized opening on her bottom tonight.  I suspect it will be not red by mid morning tomorrow and gone soon after that - assuming no foods that irritate it & such.

I don't like zinc oxide based ointments because -while they seem to keep the wound sealed from air and keep them from getting more yuck in them - they also seem to keep the wound open longer.  I suspect that is because the bacteria/acid I just can't get totally removed from the area (it is a butt, ya know) is held in the wound by the zinc oxide.

I wonder if you whipped it like butter (w/a mixer) if it wouldn't scoop a little easier and still be "melty" KWIM??

I bet it would!

I just checked her over and she has no reddened areas and I can't see an open spot where I saw it bleeding just last night.  That area looks a bit discolored - like a light purple.  Similar to a place that used to have a scab but doesn't anymore - ya' know?  OK.  Sounds too good to be true - but I'm gonna keep making my green grease this way.

SarahK, can you fedex a tub up to Mpls?

Just kidding.  But I should give it a try.  I've never made my own herbal concoctions.  Did you get your stuff from bulkherbstore?  Is it all readily available and easy to find?  I have coconut oil and olive oil, but not the rest.

Let me know, eh?  Thanks!

I tried making this and mine didn't harden until I put it in the fridge.  Any ideas as to why?  (I let it sit and cool then put the cover on and then it sat on dd'd changing dresser for 2 days...still a liquid...then put in fridge.)

Hmm....

My only guesses are less olive oil in my batch or you have a warmer house.  We're at about 68 here usually.  Is coconut oil usually solid or liquid at your house?

Rats.

I was afraid you would say that.

I don't know why it's not staying solid - sorry.

I know that I have added melted beeswax to purchased salves to make them more solid.  That might help for you - but I'm afraid that I don't know any other fixes beyond that and the frige (which doesn't make it as convenient).

I have been reading through this thread trying to get ideas.  My 2 week old has a yeasty rash on her tush.  I have never had to deal with a rash in one this young before.  I tried Miracle Salve for a few days but (not a bg surprise) it isn't helping at all for the looks of it - I can't say whether or not it is helping her comfort at all.  I have been letting her go diaperless today and just replacing the open cloth diaper underneath her - but I do worry she is going to catch cold ... it is still snowy here and our house is about 68 degrees.   I gave her a dead sea salt and comfrey tea bath and we'll see if that helps.  I am sure its yeast as I have had more sugar since she was born and breastfeeding than I did probably the whole pregnancy - that and I am very new to cloth diapering...  Undecided  I will have to keep trying the different suggestions.  I don't have any non-store bought kefir right now, but should by tomorrow as I just started a batch... poor baby, it looks down-right awful!

Once it firmed up in the fridge it has stayed solid at room temp.  It's such a cool shade of green! Grin

Are you using cloth on your baby, most of the time?
I had lots of problems with my baby having diaper rash all the time in cloth.   I couldn't even use disposables on her, if I did it got even worse.   If you are interested,   I can tell you what I did, just don't have time at the moment.

Feeling much better.   Smiley
Make sure you are using a detergent that is not irritating your baby's bottom.   Also,   make sure you are rinsing your diapers well enough.   I have a FL washer and they conserve water, not good for diapers.    So, I was told to first of all,  wash the diapers with just cold water,  on a short cycle.   Then do another wash with detergent, then do a wash cycle again on cold,  to rinse.    My baby still had rash problems, and it got to the point where I was only able to wear wool diaper covers on her.  As long as I used a  wool cover, her  rash would clear  up, wool is amazing!    So,   this is what  I did,  I  bought some soap nuts and use them  to wash my diapers now.    I also, now only  put my diapers through a rinse on cold, then I wash them on hot/cold and extra rinse cycle , and they are done.  My diapers come out clean and smell clean too, and they actually don't stink anymore as soon as she wets in them.   She would still get a tiny bit of rash, I'm thinking it may just  take some washes to get the old soap out,  I had been using.
If I hang the diapers  out to dry though, she won't  get a rash at all.    So, I thought maybe there are some bacteria that get killed by hanging them in the sun and not by just using the dryer.  I started using  Shaklee Basic-G  it kills germs and bacteria ,  using this has helped so much,   that I can actually use a cover now that is not wool.   I still prefer using wool though, as it lets her skin breath
It is time for me to be in bed, and I hope this is helpful information for you.   Smiley

Well, I make my own laundry soap - so no detergents...I do have one pair of wool longies I bought to try, it just still confuses me how you can keep using the same pair all day and not have to wash it and it isn't trapping ammonia from the urine by her skin... maybe I'll have to read up on the wool covers thread.  thanks for sharing! What kind of soap are you using to make your laundry soap?  Were your diapers new or used? Go you need to strip them? (only if they were used)

I used the homemade soap  at one time too,  and had buildup in my diapers so bad,   that they would stink really bad as soon as my son wet in them.    If your diapers don't smell clean when they come out of the washer, or stink when your baby wets in them, then you have a buildup problem.          We had really hard water at the time I was using the homemade soap,  which  may have been the problem.

Here is a link about wool:   http://www.thediaperhyena.com/woolscool.htm

I wanted to mention last evening (but was to  tired)  about this wonderful  salve that has worked wonders for diaper rash, including a yeast rash.    I found out about this  salve from an Amish midwife that said, to try it for my twins.    They  had a really bad raw and bleeding yeast rash.   Not even the Dr.  cream that I was using got rid of it, but the mineral salve cleared it right up.    This salve is amazing, I have friends that wouldn't want to be without it.  It did help my currents baby's rash some, but her rash was due to build up and detergent sensitives.

The salve is towards the bottom of the page, it is # 41 mineral paste.   http://veirons.com/products_line.html

Like Tummy Tune-up?  I have that.  I also have Yeast Assasin but that says not for preggo use so I was concerned to use it for us now...  How many times a day do you think?  I do NOT want fullblown thrush again as that is SOOOOO painful on the ni88les!  yikes!  And if she is having yeast on her bottom that she is getting from my diet ... I want to be VERY careful.

YES!!  Tummy Tune-up would be perfect.  I think, since pro-boitics are good bacteria that there would be no limit on how much to use, so I used to just open a capsule into a quarter cup or so of warm water and use a cotton ball to swab over clean bottom every hour or so.  Keep leaving baby's bottom open to the air as much as you can, too.  If you have a sunny window that you can lay her in front of, that can help, imo -- just NOT direct sunlight maybe.
I don't think it's advisable for you to take Yeast Assasin but Tummy TU should be okay.
