1) Maya wrap for those itty bitty bodies

2) burp clothes- because I was paranoid they'd spit up on all the shoulders that wanted to hold them

3) I always bought a new bumper pad- that they'd each have their own.  I now own 5 or 6, but I've loved them all  (they're $4-5 at Ross, Marshalls, TJMaxx)

4) Ergo for when they get to the sitting stage (but that's my back talking- not a necessity!)

5) swing- for when you really do need to put them down!

6) Gripe Water- for tummies, but I bet there's a lady here with a homeade recipe for that (ginger & fennel)

7) gowns.  My babies lived in gowns for the first month.  They are so easy to change and so c.udd.ly, and didn't get in the way of their movement

I'm sure I can think of more, but that's what I needed/wanted from the outset

A nice big diaper bag. I put all my "purse" stuff in it too, so I only have to carry one bag.

Those gowns with the elastic or drawstring around the bottom or zip-up sleep sacks. No blanket required at night and makes changing the diaper so much easier.

A portable play pen. Good for keeping them off the floor when it's not at its cleanest and great to take along on overnight visits. On our last visit, we slept on a mattress on the floor and I just turned our play pen on it's side, put the removable padded bottom on the side that was now on the floor, and scooted it right up to the mattress where I was sleeping. It kept baby within arms reach for patting back to sleep if he stirred, for scooting him over to me if he needed to be fed, and it kept him from crawling off somewhere if he woke up while we were all still asleep. Of course it's great just set up like normal too. Oh, and if your baby will sleep with you when you travel (maybe there's no room for a play pen), then a portable siderail is great too! It slips under the mattress and keeps baby from rolling off the bed. We have one and it has been very handy when the bed we were sleeping on wasn't big enough for dh, me, baby, and a wall of pillows to fence him in.  Smiley

A walker. My babies have all loved to be able to get around in one of these before they could crawl or walk.

I ditto the no-need-for-a-changing-table advice. We just put a padded changing pad on top of a dresser and all the diapers, wipes, etc. in the top drawer. With their clothes in the second drawer and the bibs and burp pads in the third drawer, we have a complete changing and dressing station that will be usefull long past the diaper stage.

I wanted a Bumbo so bad and didn't get one. Now I'm glad I didn't. It was a lot of money to pay for something that would've only been useful for such a short time. Same with the bouncy seat. We were given one and it was useful, but for such a short period of time that I think we could have done without one.

What good ideas!

I used my bouncer extensively for all my kids and they loved it!  It has toys on it as well so that they can play if they feel so inclined.  That was one of my must-haves.

I also loved BIG nursing blankets for my wiggly babies who love to pull off the blanket!

And I used a LOT of Cascade Dishwashing Detergent to get stains out of clothes (my babies always leaked through their diapers!).  It works great, just beware of non-safe bleaching items.

I heartily second the patient, joyful heart!  It is probably your most needed item for being a mom!

Assuming I had the basics (running water, heat, simple clothing, blankets, ice), my list now is much different than it was in the days with just 2-3 children.  When I hit about 36 weeks, we get our Mini Arm's Reach Co-sleeper crib set up in a room on the same floor as our bedroom.  Then we gotta find the car-seat.  The Man picks up some disposable newborn diapers on the way home some day so I have something to catch mecconium slime.  The clothing for baby is about twice as many onesie t-shirts as you think you might need and about 5-10 light-weight, footed jammie sleepers - must open all the way down at least one leg.  I have a big pile of well worn receiving blankets (garages sales are great) that wrap and cuddle nicely.  I just use more in the winter than the summer - no need to have heavy blankets here.

I make the bed up with lots of layers, too.  Crib sheet on the bottom.  Then waterproof pad(s) strategically placed to catch leaks from all ends.  Cover with receiving blanket.  Repeat at least 3-4 times... kinda like The Princess and The Pea.  Put an empty laundry basket on the floor and I'm set for the night.  If baby is blurpy or has a blow out I just throw the layer in the basket and it's ready for bedtime again.  Wash stuff in the morning.

Hmm....   After that probably a baby room moniter is a help to me - but I didn't need one until I had about 4-6 kids.  By that time I had big ones, little ones and the tiny one all doing different things.  The moniter helped bring the volume of the voice of the tiny one up to the level of the rest when I needed to hear him over the roar of the crowd...

I ditched a big diaper bag at about 4 kids.  I now have a small school-lunch bag sized backpack.  Fits 2-3 diapers, 2-3 pullups, 1 sm package wipes, change of tiny kid clothing and leaky-mommy stuff.  If I need more than that, I stuff it under the seat of the van.  My emergancy stash is in there somewhere.

Beyond that, I lay my babies right on the floor on a blanket - maybe banked in towels or pillows if there is a draft.  We have all gotten used to stepping over babe in the kitchen or sliding him under a chair to watch as the big guys wrestle on the floor.

Given the basics, baby care can really be quite gadget free.  Grandmas seem to have a hard time understanding that sometimes...

I never found a need for either a changing table or a swing.  With my first babies we didn't have the room, then I was just in that habit so with my later babies I tried to set all that stuff up but like you said- it got in the way.  The portable playpen is good if you do travel or need a safe spot to put them down outdoors.  This will be our first baby who will have and outdoor one and an indoor one (actually that is all we'll have for a crib this time...don't want a crib either...).  I find that simplifying in general makes it all easier.  Nursing resolves the need to bring tons of feeding or pacifying supplies.

Oh - one thing I have finally learned is that it may be more benefical to travel with a change of clothes for YOURSELF than for the baby!  Often times, the baby missed himself but managed to make ME unpresentable in public so now I keep a little rubbermaid tote in the back of the van with a change of clothes for everyone (big boys have potty accidents on rare occasions too or forget why it isn't a good idea to jump in the creek outback someone else's place, etc...).  Even dh has needed a new shirt on occasion so it has come in handy.

Other than that - most of the accessory stuff is just extra stuff to lug around and risk forgetting somewhere (IMHO).  I do suggest a stroller though - perhaps a two seater if you other one is still very young.  I like to have mine for shopping, etc, and is nice to set everyone's stuff in too. HTH

I second the gowns, they are my favorite thing for baby to wear when they are tiny.  Lets see.....lots of blankets, booties (if it is cold)  A play pen (we don't use a crib, baby either sleeps in bed with us or in play pen) cloth or disposable diapers, it deepends upon what day you ask me. Wink  A good rash cream, and nursing pads for mommy.

... a large purse--I hate to have to carry a bunch of things around--find one big enough for a couple of diapers, washcloths, ziplock bag to carry the waste home, extra blanket, keys, wallet and a lipstick Kiss
...a couple of packs of cloth diapers with pins
...plastic pants
...a diaper pail
...6-10 onesies
...3-5 cotton footed-jammies
...5 or so receiving blankets
...a good nursing bra
...baby sized nail clippers
...carseat/carrier

This is also under the cloth diaper posts, but we laid towels on the bathroom cabinet and kept the small cheap washcloths from W-M in the drawer below with stacks of diapers and plastic pants/diaper covers.  When we needed to clean we would use water and soap to clean the baby's bottom.  Everything would then be thrown in the diaper pail.
Our babies also just slept in the bed with us... we would usually lay a towel down under them in case of leaks.
We always have plenty of pillows around, so I used these to support the baby/take the ease off my back when nursing.  I would usually sit in bed and read to my older while nursing the baby using a bed pillow to support him

For me it was:

good breastmilk
naps for mom
good balanced meals for mom
lots of water for mom
supermom, red raspberry leaf, and other post partum vitamins
an answering machine (so you can turn off the phone)
a sign for the front door that says for folks to come back later
receiving blankets for swaddling
onesies
a sleep sack (for winter babies)
a sling
lansinoh or some other lanolin for your n*pples
Q-tips -- I use a lot of q-tips when my babies are little
gauze and vasoline if you circ your boy baby
and I used a sleeping wedge with my baby who had reflux
cloth diapers for burp cloths, etc.
nursing pads
pacifiers (if your kid will take them; mine wouldn't)

I have a lands end diaper bag.  It's a TOTAL lifesaver.  VERY practical.  Mine is this version but from 1999 (hand me down from my SIL).  With 3 kids it's still got plenty of room.

Our kids wouldn't wear socks, mittens, gowns, or hats as newborns, but they're good, too.  To this day, the boys still prefer to be naked all the time.

My favorites:
cotton gowns
Miracle for diaper rash, sore breasts, etc
sweet almond oil for after bath (mom and baby)
nursing pillows: I bought 2 cheap pillows at Walmart, put pillowcases on them- mine are soft flannel. One pillow lives in the living room, the other in the bedroom. I use them for nursing, catching spit up, diaper blow outs, etc.  I wash the cases when needed, and the pillows too.  When I am done nursing and the pillows are nasty, then I throw them out.
Rocking chair
Mesh bag.  I use this to put the little socks in to wash.  Saves them from the hungry sock monster.
Reading material for the nursing sessions, and read aloud to baby
Quart jar I drink a quart of water between every nursing session
laundry basket this is to put baby in to sleep when the house is grand central station.  The basket can be carried from room to room, and set up on the counter, the table, the dryer, on the floor, etc.  When I baby sit babies I sleep them in the laundry basket too.

I keep a changing table in my living room. (I'll have three in diapers here soon). Much easier than bending over on the couch or getting down on the floor to change a diaper. I'll let the newborn sleep on the changing table for a little while, too.
I also have a big white Graco high chair that a grandparent bought us with our first, 10 yrs ago..it's still going strong! It reclines, and I like to lay the new baby in it while I'm working in the kitchen.
I had a vibrating bouncy seat..and it was a life saver, but I recently sold it in a yard sale..we'll see how it goes without one this time.

I WILL be getting another exersaucer though when baby is old enough. Those things are wonderful Smiley

My necessities after 6 kids and many mistakes:
two breasts
lots of disposable diapers
onesies and sleepers - LOTS
burp cloths
a crib or bassinette
a separate room for baby from day one
a wonderful, supportive husband with lots of vacation time
a church full of ladies who like to cook and deliver meals
an endless supply of good water
new, fun undies for mom after the yukko stage
a houseful of independent and well-trained kids (still working on this one)
and two very important words "NO" and "HELP"

That gets me through the first 2 weeks until I feel like a human again, albeit a tired one!

Save lots and lots of those plastic shopping bags like the ones we all get from places like walmart.

Those bags are good for wrapping up poopy diapers when throwing them away. That way it helps to decrease the baby poop smell in the house.

My cosleeper would be my first pick for a "must have". I like the looks of that mini cosleeper. The one I had was full size. Unfortunate I don't have space on my trailer for either so this baby will be in bed with us. Hubby likes them in with us anyway.

I never seemed to have enough hands to carry my diaper bag. I picked up a backpack for 1.50 at the thrift store. It has been the best diaper bag. I put my big wallet in the front and don't have to carry a purse. Gives me free hands and hubby likes to carry the manly backpack over the pastel diaper bag Wink

You two make me laugh.  One time, I changed baby #6 in the passenger's seat of our big van.  It was in my lap.  Um, the way I had to hold the legs and the position of babe in my lap as I was doing this was kinda like a pump.  He kept a poopin on me.  All's I could do was laugh and laugh and then figure out how in the world was I gonna clean up that mess.  Orange little baby poop all over my jumper skirt.  I'm thinking I traveled home in my top and pantaloons that time. Tongue

So yeah, I guess a change of clothes is good.

Lots of onesies (not newborn around here, that is such a joke).  and those one piece sleepers if it's a winter baby.

Receiving blankets and cloth diapers galore for burpees and poopees.

Disposable diapers and wipes, but only one pack of the newborns.  The rest size 2-3.

Our crib in our room lifted up to the bassinet height.

A monitor

A car seat and a bouncy chair around here so the baby can be up and out of the way at appropriate times.  We have a swing, some babies (at about 1 month on or so) use it and some do not.

A couple of heavy blankets for laying on the couch/floor for baby at about 2 mos on up.

Hope you get preggars soon Heather!!

My favorite things were the sack sleeper things and plain white gerber onesies. The onesies keep everything clean and the baby warm and the sack sleepers make it easy to get through the onesies! And a second shirt for mom in the diaper bag, extra nursing pads, butt paste (seriously, that's the name of it!), a good book for when your nursing and an extra blanket for over the shoulder. And my Maya sling was quite helpful too.

What I use the most:

- larger sized receiving blankets (1 yd. square is about perfect - smaller ones don't work so well for getting a good tight swaddle)
- lap pads (work for changing pads and putting under baby just about anywhere)
- cheap prefold diapers (for burp cloths)
- Shoshanna's Eden salve is WONDERFUL for diaper rash!
- I actually don't care for the gowns - they are difficult to get on during the night if they need changing (it's mostly the sleeves that make it challenging) and I find that they are continually riding up - I much prefer footed sleepers - our little guy wears these all day and all night
- a digital camera (gotta catch all the cute moments)  Smiley
- I love my fuzzi bunz diapers and homemade cloth wipes!  I wouldn't do without these!
- infant swing (a necessity for us!  sometimes I just need a safe place to set the baby while I use the bathroom or throw in some laundry, and he likes it!)
- I really like my Boppy pillow - it sure has helped save my arms and back while nursing

For Mama -
- some good nursing bras - get one with "easy access" for you and the baby
- nursing pads - I leak straight through cloth ones and most disposables, but have loved the Lansinoh disposable ones
- meals ready to go in the freezer
- lots of quick, healthy snacks you can eat with one hand
- I love having about a half dozen nice nursing tops - I feel much better about nursing when we're going out, knowing that I'm modest and covered (and *warm* in the winter!)
- Ameda comfort gel pads were soooooo nice during the first week or two when I was so very sore from nursing
- rice bags are nice and comforting for sore muscles

that's all I've got for now!

I have to agree about the gowns - our first is a girl so we were given many. They rode up and then with leaky diapers it just gave an outlet for the leakage to get everywhere. My husband swore them off. I love the footed pajamas too. Our second is a boy so I never even tried the gowns.

With my second, I could not have lived without a Baby Bjorn. I didn't know about Ergo then.

Unlike a lot of you, I actually like the different bouncers or swings too. You don't need a lot but having a seat for baby is good. I personally LOVED our transportable baby swing that folded flat and we could put in the car with us.

A pack and play or portable crib is great.

LOTS of cloth diapers for burp cloths.

BIBS - my two were such spitters that they lived in bibs from about 6 weeks on. A LOT easier to change bibs than the actual outfit.

I loved my Boppy.

Diaper bag that works as your purse too.

And I guess I'm the only one that prefers t-shirts to onesies. Don't get me wrong, I use onesies a lot, but I prefer t-shirts.

I don't know why the t-shirts are so hard to find and why so few people use them. I would rather put my little one in a t-shirt and pants or shorts and only have to worry about taking off one thing to get to a dirty diaper, than go thru pants and then a onesie too. Also, if the diaper leaks, you only have to change the pants and the t-shirt is fine (most of the time). Plus, I think they are just so cute!

As for the gowns.... the only time I've had the gowns ride up is if I carry the baby around in it a lot. But that doesn't happen much because I don't put them in a gown during the day, just at night to keep them warm and to have easy access to the diaper in the dark.

I love going streamlined with a baby: small stroller, small diaper bag, small highchair (booster type) small sling (did you know the Moby Wrap is just a long piece of fabric?), sink for a tub, few toys and "baby equipment." A laundry basket works fine for a bassinet.

Some of my favorite items are sleep sacks that zip up, a carseat cover in lieu of snowsuits and coats, and when they start solids, a babyfood grinder like this. I just bought one of those mesh food holders mentioned on the solids thread for my 8-mo-old. I gave some pear to him in it tonight and suck, suck, suck, it was GONE in less than ten minutes!  Cheesy

For mom: a sitz bath, pretty new nursing-friendly nightwear, and lots of help around the house.

I love those flannel-covered rubber pads for the changing table and crib. But it seems like the ones they sell now are vinyl. Does anyone know where you can get the real rubber ones still?

Yes! I love my car seat bag/coat/blanket zip-up thingy. Like this: http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=534141&parentCategoryId=85184&categoryId=85220:
No wrestling baby into a snowsuit or having him kick a blanket off. And they stay cozy warm and don't get too hot as air can move around them, kwim?
