*************************************************************My daughter is 3 1/2 mos. now and I still have to wear panty liners because there is some spotting every now and then.   Tongue  Most days there's just a little, but other days it's browner and heavier.  I can tell that it is on days where I physically do more (like if we have company over and I have to cook and clean all day... when I work in the garden... etc.)

Thank you all for your replies!  I will try to rest when I can.  I haven’t felt like I was overdoing (haven’t gotten into a regular exercising routine or anything), but each day is pretty full.  I usually don’t get to bed until pretty late, so I generally nap with my girl when she’s having her “noonies” and going down for her morning nap after hubby leaves for work.  I do take her to bed with me at night which has been such a blessing!  She sleeps pretty well at night, but when she does wake up in the wee hours it’s really easy to take care of her this way (I am so thankful for my Mama who lets me in on these secrets Wink ).  I can see how my seeing things that need to get done and feeling anxious about the fact that I’m not getting to them might be even more of a problem for me than physically doing too much work.  ‘Cause I don’t accomplish all that much these days—the time-consumer is the baby and that is a real delight. Smiley  My cramps aren’t all that bad, basically just once in a while a nagging ache for a few hours (one day I did take an Aleve … I was on a shopping trip and was feeling weakened by them), and I don’t have any other symptoms of an infection.  So most likely I’m just taking a longer bit to heal and extra bits of rest here and there will help.  Mama says she’ll help me locate some kelp. Smiley I appreciate you ladies’ input!

I talked to my midwife yesterday and she enthusiastically okayed my plan to limit pp lochia! I have always bled the full six weeks and last birth had a heavy blood loss right after birth (nothing near hemmmorage). I have since read that the less bleeding you do after birth the better you'll feel pp (Thanks KristenA Smiley). This makes alot of sense to me as bleeding depletes your body of many nutrients, espcially iron. My mw offers her clients an herbal tea with shepard purse in it and says that mom's who drink it only have bleeding for 2 weeks maximum after birth! I am planning to take shepard purse tincture instead for the convience factor and that i'm more likely to take it than a nasty tasting tea that I'll have make and remember to drink thoughout the day. The dose I plan to take is 1/2 to 1 tsp. Shepard's Purse tincture under tounge and held for 3 minutes then swalled directly after birth. The I'll continue to take the SP two to three times daily (just swallow) until my bleeding is stopped. Of course, I'm going to rest and recover and enjoy getting to know my baby pp too!

I'm also talked to my midwife about not cutting or clamping the cord until the placenta is delivered. Mom's who had done this have reported no bleeding at birth. PP lochia was the same though. My midwife mentioned that a mom she recently had a lotus birth (the cord wasn't cut for an hour after birth so placenta could stay attached to baby) and she had hardly any blood at birth! I plan to only wait until the placenta is delivered though! I wonder why they started cutting the cord before the delivery of the placenta anyway? Maybe so the caregiver can take baby and do the checks etc. more conviently? My midwife doesn't see it as nececcary.

Slightly off-topic, but to answer your question, sometimes the cord isn't long enough for the baby to come up past your stomach, so it would be impossible to nurse the baby to help with the contractions to get the placenta out.  But I'm sure it started with Dr.s to make it easier for them to "do their thing".

Okay, I have a potential problem here, and I need your help.

I had my baby 6 days ago.  I had a weird thing with the placenta, where it came out, but just hung there. Well, it apparently was the water bag that was still attached. Dh felt around, and it plopped out.  I looked at the placenta after it came out, but since this was the first time I'd done that, I didn't really know everything to look for. There was a tear in one side, but it still looked like everything was there.

I've been feeling great, going places most every day, fairly light bleeding. But just a bit ago at the toilet, what felt like a clot came out, except it didn't come out all the way, was just hanging there. I managed to tear a chunk of it off and it def looks like placenta to me. There's still some "hanging out" that doesn't want to budge, even with pushing and gentle tugging.

What do I do? We'd wanted to avoid the mw (though I love her dearly) to keep from having any paper trail leading the state to baby. But if necessary, I will call her.

My very strong opinion is that you go see someone immediately.  If it is in fact placenta, you need to have it removed immediately because it can cause fatal infection.  If it is something else (I can't imagine what) you should probably also have it taken care of.  Since your body is not able to shed it on its own, intervention seems to be the only way.
By the way, what is the problem with the state knowing your baby exists?  Isn't it only a matter of time?   ~L

I agree.  Get to the doctor/midwife!  You have the potential to hemorrhage.  And that can be fatal.

I had someting very similar at 4 days postpartum after my last birth. I pulled the chunk out but then I started hemorrhaging BAD. It was so scary especially since I had lost way too much blood at the birth. We messaged my uterus and I took many doses of Hem-halt, bayberry and cayenne pepper. It took about 45 min for the bleeding to slow back to normal. I stayed completely off my feet for over a week and passed several more pieces. I'm now about 7 weeks postpartum and I'm still feeling weak from all the lost blood. It was a very scary situation and if I had it to do over I'd have called a Dr and not taken the risk.

This could be a blood clot too. To prevent them in the future...

Quote
Once the placenta has been delivered, fundal massage (massaging from the top of the uterus down toward the cervix) should be done every ten minutes for the first couple of hours after birth. This helps expel any clots that may be forming on the site where the placenta was located. These clots need to be removed by massage becasue some can form that are large enough to block the cervix.

Periodic check on the uterus should be performed for the first twenty-four hours. It is a good idea for mom to massage the uterus ina downward motion during bathroom trips to expel clots that may have formed

(((((hugs)))))) I would not hestitate to call the midwife. Let us know how you're doing. Jenny

I agree with the others, this can be very serious and at least a call to the midwife or doc might be in order. Praying for you.

Thank you all.  I called the midwife, and explained everything.  She is of the opinion that everything is fine, I can try to pull it out myself if I want.  I think I will wait overnight for that and see if it comes out on it's own.  She also recommended strong red raspberry tea, so I've made some of that already.  I will keep you updated.  Thank you again!  You are a great group of friends!

Just an update.  That piece came out and so far no other pieces have shown up.  Still having fairly light bleeding overall, feeling great, except wishing I didn't have to go someplace almost every day!

Hi ladies,
I am new to this so bare with me...

I had my daughter just about six weeks ago and I am still bleeding.
It is normal just the way it should be BUT here is my question.

After being with my husband I start to bleed bright red. Is this normal?
I really feel fine but that kind of scares me off. Any advise on this will be SO helpful.

Thanks!

I would suggest waiting longer... I've always waited not less than 2 months. Nothing religious or anything but your body needs the rest. My last baby was my biggest and only a year after the one before her and my sweet hubby waited 3 months. The extra month made a HUGE difference in recovery. Also I bled off and on with my first 3 for 6-8 weeks. 4th and 5th I took TONS of red raspberry and in was only 3 weeks:)

I replied on the other thread.  You propbably popped some capilaries open again.  I would at least wait until I had stopped bleeding for a few days before resuiming relations.  I know when it's been awhile, that it's hard to wait and go slowly, but you do really need to be gentle  for a little while longer.
