Protein Snacks & Foods [Pregnancy, (Pre)Eclampsia, Atkins, Yeast/Candida]
« on: June 15, 2006, 07:49:47 PM » by mamasboys
Hey all, I've finally gotten over the morning sickness hump and am wanting to stay healthy during this pregnancy.  I gained 65 pounds with my last 3 pregnancies and at 16 weeks I'm already up 10 pounds!!
I thought I was doing pretty well with my food choices:  Eggs in the morning, sandwich or salad for lunch and whatever is on the menu for dinner and snacks have been toast or dried or fresh fruit.  My hubby thought that I was probably eating too many carbs/natural sugars and should eat more protein but aside from eggs and meat, what else is there??  I'm having a really hard time with gas and bloating and I think I've pinpointed dairy as the main cause.  Anytime I eat cottage cheese, yogurt or drink milk I end up with horrible cramps all night.
So, any suggestions??  I really don't want to live on eggs and chicken for the next 5 months but I HAVE to keep my weight down this time.
Clearly, I have not been exercising.  Weather here has been horrible so we've been cooped up inside and I don't have any good pregnancy videos - any recommendations?
Oh, and I should mention that peanut butter is a BIG aversion for me right now and has been for all of my pregnancies.  YIKES!
Anyway, I just really want to stay healthy and keep my weight within a normal range this time around.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Thanks ladies!

Legumes (peanuts), beans, lentils, eggs, red meat, poultry, seafood, seeds(especially pumpkin and sunflower) and nuts (especially walnuts).

Not much variety, but there it is.

Hi,

It would probably be a good idea to avoid herbs during your first 3 months for safety.  Anyway, in The Woman's Book of Healing Herbs by Sari Harrar and Sara Altshul O'Donnell, there are two teas for indigestion and gas during pregnancy.  Here they are:

Citrus- mint digestion helper
Perk up your digestive system and overcome indigestion with this deliciious after-meal tea:
In a teapot or heatproof quart jar, combine 1 tsp each of lemon balm, meadowsweet, chamomile, spearmint, crushed aniseed and orange or tangerine rind (for flavor).  Add 2 cups of boiling water and steep for 15 minutes.  Strain, sweeten with 1 tsp of honey if desired, and sip while warm.
Lemon balm, a traditional digestion calmer, is approved in Germany for easing digestive spasms.  Research has found that volatile oils in chamomile relieve spasms and also calms digestion.  Spearmint eases digestion and calms the stomach.

Fennel tea
Aromatic oils in fennel seed ease heartburn pain and gas.  Make some tea by adding 1 cup of boiling water to 1 tsp of crushed fennel seeds.  Steep for 15 minutes, then sip.

I hope you feel better soon  Smiley

I am in the same boat; my nursing baby is allergic to dairy.  You can eat tuna, but only once a week.  That is what my OB told me; otherwise you could get too much mercury.  You could eat bok choy (sp?) which has a LOT of calcium to make up for the dairy.  For extra protein I like to get cheap steaks and cook them up fast for lunch with a big salad.  You can also dump a can of kidney beans or black beans on a salad for a really quick meal.  Other than that, I don't know, and i hope to see more ideas because I'm at a loss, too.

well, it's still eggs but you could "devil" some and have them in the fridge for a quick snack.  I am 5 ft tall and I ALWAYS gained a bunch no matter what.  I do have big babies for me but still........55 was the best I could do out of five.  I just think sometimes women that are pregnant just gain.  I had to give the midwife a list of what a ate for a week so for a week I ate PERFECT so I wouldn't have to lie  Cheesy on my paper and I didn't gain but it was just unrealistic for me for 9 months to do.  I did eat pretty well most of the time and never any more than normal but I just put it on.  So...I'm not saying give up but dont' beat yourself up either.  By the charts I am obese but my husband get "mad" at me when I say that.  I guess I "carry" it well and I am always working at getting it off.  Tongue I WILL NEVER GIVE UP THE "FIGHT"  Grin

you could start the morning with a smoothie:

Soak almonds overnight (soak plenty and rinse once a day; keep in fridge) and add a big handful to the blender with a cup or so of water and blend. This is your raw almond milk base (costco has raw almonds for the best price)

then add a few big handfuls of greens and a banana and waaaalaaaaahhhh a sweet salad with so many nutrients you will be full of energy, low on sugar and doing well in the protein area. Add honey if you must.

you can switch to berries instead of salad greens but this will provide you with two salads a day (since you eat one for lunch) and less calories and less weight gain. Add some bee pollen which also helps stabalize weight (provided you are eating healthfully).

A few high protein recipes - enjoy!
Dried Chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
2 cans (540 mL each) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil or canola oil
1/2 tsp salt
pinch cayenne - added to food, cayenne improves appetite and digestion and relieves gas, nausea, and indigestion.
     1. In a large bowl, toss chickpeas with oil, salt, and cayenne.  Spread onto large baking sheet in a single layer.
     2. Bake in 400F oven, shaking pan a couple of times during cooking, for about 45 minutes, or until golden.  Let cool completely.

Chunky Turkey Salad - 37 g protein /  serving - 4 servings
1/4 cup low-fat mayo
1/2 cup fat free sour cream
2 tsp chopped fresh thyme or 1 tsp dried
2 tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp grated lemon peel
1 pound cooked skinless turkey, cut into 1/2'' cubes
2 ribs celery, chopped
1 apple, cut into 1/2'' cubes
1/3 cup dried apricots, sliced
1/4 cup toasted coarsely chopped walnuts
In a large bowl, whisk the mayo, sour cream, thyme, lemon juice, and lemon peel until smooth.  Add the turkey, celery, apple, and apricots.  Toss gently to coat.  Sprinkle with walnuts.

Mung Bean Curry - mung beans are among the most easily digested beans and cumin and ginger help counteract gas (I think hb posted a lot of info on ginger during pregnancy somewhere, it should be safe in small amounts) - 4 servings
1 1/4 cups whole mung beans
3 cups cold water
pinch tumeric
4 small or 2 large tomatoes, roughly chopped
1 inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped
5-6 large spinach leaves, finely chopped
1/2 tsp ground coriander and/or gournd cumin seeds
1 tbsp butter or ghee
1 tsp fennel seeds
salt
Wash and soak mung beans; drain thoroughly.  Dry-roast in a frying pan over a medium flame until the beans are dry and give off a toasted aroma.  Transfer to a large saucepan and add water and tumeric.  Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes.  Add the tomatoes and ginger, and cook for 10 minutes more until the beans are tender.  Add the spinach, ground coriander/cumin.  Stir well and coverr.  Melt the ghee/butter in a frying pan and, when it is hot, add the fennel seeds; roast until the seeds pop, and then add to the mung beans and stir well.  Season with salt to taste and serve.

Steamed milk custard-an asian dessert
1 cup beaten egg
water + juice from 1 inch piece of ginger (grate ginger and squeeze) --> 1 cup liquid
1 cup milk
4 oz rock sugar (can experiment with honey too)
     1. Add milk into beaten egg slowly
     2. Dissolve rock sugar in water+ginger.  Cool, gradually mix into egg mixture.
     3. Divide mixture into 4 rice bowls, steam over gentle heat ina bamboo steamer (or any other steaming mechanism) for 25 minutes, or until set.

Peanut Sweet tea - an asian dessert; similar variations include almonds (unroasted), cashews, or walnuts - makes 6 bowls.
4 oz peanuts
5 cups water
5 oz rock sugar
2 tbsp rice
2 oz milk, evaporate milk for extra creaminess
     1. Roast peanuts in 300F preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until cooked.  Cool and remove skins.  Blend with 1 cup of water in an electric blender, filter through a cheesecloth
     2.  Soak rice in 1/2 cup water, blend, and filter through  cheesecloth.  Set aside.
     3. Bring the rest of the water to a boil, dissolve rock sugar, add peanut mixture, stir and simmer for 1 minute.
     4. Thicken with rice solution, add milk, mix well, and serve hot.

Indian dhal - a traditional lentil dish - 4-6 servings
1 cup red lentils, yellow or green split peas, or split yellow mung beans
3 cups water
2 tbsp oil
1/2 tsp black mustard seeds or fennel
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tbsp hot green chilies chopped and seeded (optional)
4 whole cloves
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp tumeric
Cook the lentils or beans in water until thick and mush (20-30 min).  Meanwhile, heat the oil ina  frying pan and add the mustard seeds.  When these begin to pop, add the cumin seeds and saute briefly, being careful not to let them burn.  Add the chopped chilies, cloves, salt, and tumeric to the pan, and continue frying for a few minutes.  Add the fried spice mixture to the lentils/beans.  Stir well, and reheat gently.

Well, you do want to eat enough protien, but ask your midwife for an actual recomended amount- too much will cause you to gain weight too. I personally aim for around 55- 75 grams a day, but more like 55. The books say more, but I felt better and gained less when I followed my instincts and ate the amount that was appealing to my appetite (making sure I was getting a good amount).
Also, I love avacados. They are high in protien for a veggie, and are a wonderfully creamy subsistute for dairy.

Don't forget nuts!  Nuts have protein and are a great snack.

In Nourishing Traditions the author talks a lot about how important broths are.  When you make a broth with bones, the gelatin and minerals come out of the bones and into the broth and make it very nutritious.  Gelatin contains protein, but is not a complete protein.  Apparently, it is protein-sparing, meaning you can get as much benefit from a smaller amount of meat in your diet.  I would think it would also help meet the increased need for calcium and other minerals during pregnancy.  I'm sure you could search a website like allrecipes.com for some great recipes.

Congratulations on your pregnancy, by the way!

Gelatin contains protein, but is not a complete protein.
I believe that gelatin is also a good source of collagen.  Good for the skin and hair.  A little vanity, but it sure won't hurt. Wink

I need help thinking of healthy protein snacks.  I"m pregnant and trying to get enough protein and not to snack on carbs, but keep coming up short on ideas.  A piece of chicken just isn't appetizing for a snack.

I've thought of these:
nuts and seeds
hardboiled egg, stuffed eggs
cheese "sticks"

What do ya'll have for a protein snack?

Cook up a couple of pounds of bacon ahead of time.  A slice or two is cool to munch on.

I also like to whip up plain tuna and miracle whip, salt and pepper and eat it with a fork or on crackers or chips.

I think pistachios are high end on protien and I also just eat peanut butter right off the spoon.  Grin

ooh yea PB and apples! Also with celery and raisins is yummy. Smoked salmon is a big one around here, but we live on the coast and hubby is a big fisherman so he makes us some fabulous smoked salmon and we don't have to buy it. I do think you can buy canned salmon at a decent price but I never have done it so I am not sure. We are big cheese eaters too with pickles...  Someone mentioned almonds which are good no matter what you do with them but I like to stir them up with a little olive oil, sea salt and garlic powder and toast them in the oven... hmm must be snack time.  Cheesy

I don't know if anyone has mentioned smoothies... yogurt, banana, berries, milk and ice in a blender (I think there is more than one thread around here with great smoothie recipies)

If you are talking high protein/low carb, the fruit, yogurt, tortilla and crackers are not favorable.

some things I do are:
slice ham with swiss cheese, rolled up and eaten out of hand or wrapped with lettuce, mayo and mustard.

cream cheese, onion and bell pepper spread on any lunch meat (beef is favorite) and rolled up

cheese crisps - make small piles of grated cheese in non-stick skillit.  On med-hi, cook and melt until it gets crispy around the edges or even all the way through if you like.  Remove to paper towels and let drain and cool a bit.  Delish!!!!

Peanut butter cookies-
1 c. peanut butter
1 c. splenda (I know, I know but any real sweatners cause me problems and I haven't tried this with stevia yet)
1 egg
1 Tbls. vanilla

Mix.  Spray cookie sheet. Make walnut size balls and criss cross the top with a fork sprayed with cooking spray.  Bake for 15 min. at 350* Makes 18 to 21 cookies.  Wonderful TREAT when you are low-carbing.

I found a great snack with...

The Cracked Pepper and Olive Oil Triscuits are really yummy (they are made with soybean oil). But I stirred cream cheese, dill weed and a bit of garlic salt together and spead it on these crackers...so good!! Oh I had a side of sliced avocado too.

Yummy Yogurt Snack: I made blueberry syrup for pancakes and then
used some of the leftover in plain yogurt. DELICIOUS! Syrup:
4 c. fresh or frozen blueberries, 1/2 c. honey, 1/4 c. orange juice, 2 Tbs. cornstarch, 1/4 c. cold water. Bring berries, honey and OJ to a boil then simmer 1 min. Dissolve cornstarch in cold water and stir into syrup. Simmer until thickened. Serve warm or cold. (I wonder if you could just use any berry...)

Right now, Big Lots has Back to Nature Triscut-like and Wheat Thins-like crackers.  They taste exactly like the Nabisco kind, but are healthy.

I just rediscovered my affinity for beef jerky.  This is probably going to sound a little strange  Roll Eyes, but right now I'm munching on my favorite snack...organic roasted and salted golden flax seeds!  The "NOW" company started making them a couple of months ago (HFS brand).  They also make some w/o the salt.  Since they're roasted, they're a lot easier to chew than regular flax seeds.  I put some in a little 1/4 cup measuring cup, and just eat them out of that.  That way, my mouth is munchin' on something good instead of bad!  The best part is:  Per 2 Tablespoons they contain:  Protein-4grams, fiber-6grams, and the carbs are only 1 gram after you subtract the fiber!  They also contain some naturally occurring calcium and iron.  BTW, the calories are 105.  (My older sis is a Weight Watcher's fan, and she said this is important to some people!)  Anyway, just another EASY way to get some fiber into our diets...remember to strive for 35 grams per day!!!

One way to prevent this would be to grind them in a coffee grinder then sprinkle them on other foods...this is what I do to regular seeds...the regular (unroasted) would give you the oils that flax is known for...but not a fun snack like what you are describing.

BTW the lady at the health food store said that she would still store them in the fridge so the leftover and compromised oils won't go rancid.

Can't wait to try em.
